South Korean Teen Dies After Twelve Hour Gaming Binge

Wait....this isn't progamer Moon, is it?!?! No, wait, it can't be...progamers usually play that much a day and they certainly do not die from it. Still, I do find it suspicious that the teenager in question has the nickname "Moon". =/

That said, it does seem kind of unlikely that he died from reasons related to gaming. In cases where people die due to exaggerated gaming, they usually lasted a lot longer than 12 hours. This seems like it was probably caused by something else.

Of course, that isn't going to stop the mainstream media from jumping onto this and claiming that gaming is to be blamed...

im just going to say it, VIDEO GAMES DO NOT KILL!!!
seriously, 12 hours? i can stand on one leg for longer.
though it does sound as if Moon had an obsessive personality, he had at least one break, im going to assume bathroom breaks aswell.
possibilities off the top off my head: heart attack, epilepsy, aneurysm, a delayed reaction to an allergy, an immediate reaction to an allergy, asthma, passing out from not sleeping properly and hitting head, etc. the list just goes on.

i spend about 6hrs playing games each day (still waiting on jobs/callbacks as im only just out of school)and its no different to watching movies or reading a book, i would bet that combined, you probably spend 12hrs on occasion (holidays, weekends, etc.)

Hopefully they find out what killed him. When I sit down to play videogames, it is usually for no less than 7 hours. I've played Mass Effect 2 for 12 hours straight (I didin't really eat meals, but I had a bag of mozzarella cheese nearby), and recently I played Assassin's Creed Brotherhood for 14 or so hours straight (started about 9:30 am, finished about 2:30 am, which is actually about 17 hours, but whatever). I'm not dead yet, and neither are those people who stayed up for 80 hours to beat that one Final Fantasy boss. I feel like this guy just had some random heart attack.

My exact thought when I read the "Twelve". Really? He even took a break for food...Weaksauce.

Sure, it sucks, but come on...there is also the responsibility of taking care of YOURSELF. I can't feel bad for someone like this, only for the family, if they even care enough that their son was out all the time at this internet cafe. I'm sure there were other causes behind this anyway.

That's weird i've done that when sometimes when I was really depressed. The longest binges lasted two days when I stayed locked up at my room at the boarding school. I used the toilet twice and I drank some bottled water but I didn't eat. I went to sleep in the morning though and slept for a few hours before getting up and starting again. I got kidney stones that last time though.

What a pussy. Ive played for like 14 hours straight and I didnt pass out or anything. I was tired as shit though. Did eat proper meals now and then too.

Ah well, no reason to feel bad about this people! The world has lost a moron! Lets celebrate!
Really? So first you call him a pussy then you say he was a moron only to confess you did the same thing? Two words: Fuck you. Also, reported. I can't believe someone is capable of actually saying such a thing.

OT: This is a tragedy. It was not caused by gaming, for sure, since there are other healthy persons doing the same thing right now. We can't say what happened for sure until the autopsy report comes in.

What is this, Fox News? I quite doubt it has anything to do with the all-nighter. People collapse from exhaustion, not die; only in rare cases does someone actually die from exertion. Not that you get exhausted sitting in a chair playing video games. More likely he was poisoned or had some pre-existing condition.

I've played longer than that just to see if I could. He must have had some serious other health problems or it was not his true cause of death.

Car Raft? Well, Warcraft and Minecraft sound like that :p

If it's not, then I guess that I must be getting old.

He was at a PC/Gaming Café, yes? and he played for 8 hours straight, before going back for another 4? and started at 2 in the morning? I've never been to gaming café but surely the staff would be making sure he's alright, or make sure he went home and got some rest (and not just the 2 hour pit stop for food).

Being the crack E-Doctor that I am, he must've had some underlying health issues and that the gaming part is no more than the setting. As the previous posts have said; People can play for way longer without any side effects like this.

In conclusion: vidya games ≠ death/collapse of society as we know it

12 hours DAWM I did 13-14 last night this makes me think.
Wouldn't worry.

People die, aneurysms, heart problems, useless organs rupturing...we're not perfect, you can be born with a timebomb(metaphorically)just waiting to detonate. Sad but true.

The fact that this story came from Korea is of no surprise. They play alot of games...the increased amount of time they spend playing games, means that there is a greater chance of someone dying whilst doing it...pretty simple.

Someone want to explain how him heading home and eating isn't an interruption to the gaming? He didn't just get up, go to the fridge and come back. He left the building, went home, made food, ate it and went back. This is somehow not an interruption?

I've played longer than 12 hours, there's nothing that sitting perfectly still for 12 hours will do to you healthwise as long as it's not regular. He wouldn't have been malnourished, low on water, sleep deprived or suffering organ failure.

The quickest thing to kill you is lack of water and that takes 2-4 days.
I know that on my flight to Japan standing up and walking around was mandatory every 5-6 hours because if you sit still for too long you can develop blood clots, which might possibly, after being shaken take some time(a few hours) to lodge into a vital part of your body, such as your brain. It can kill you.
I'd imagine that the only reason clotting of the blood was a risk, is because of the artificially pressurised cabin.

OT: I'm guessing cancer, haemorrhaging, or a brain aneurysm
