The Futurama version will be better.
Most likely. It's definitely going to be hard to top that without straying too far from the source material.

It was the inspiration behind "The Last Starfighter".
I really like that movie. Sure, it's old tech now, but it's a great idea and was executed pretty well for the time.

Sounds like the next shit-tastic movie for you to gather some friends, beer, chips and watch together and either laugh ...or put something less crap on.

Yes. Yes we can.

Now seriously - making movies based on old arcade games would be like making movies based on freakin' chess. I mean, you can do it, but it'll probably be [insert game name here] in the title only, because those games had very flimsy connection to reality and no story whatsoever.

Way ahead of you. Films based on these games will only prove what most of us have already figured out:
Great games make bad movies. Great movies make bad games.

hi, great movie franchise, great game here.
there are several other ones, but this is my favourite.
save judgment until release.

What will the plot actually be? Will it be a standard alien-invasion flick? How will it reference the titular game? Will it reference video games? If so, how? Who will be the hero? Who will be the villain? What will be the nature of the conflict?

I fear that I will be disappointed once I learn the answers to these questions.

Anyway, I would prefer to see a movie version of Only You Can Save Mankind [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Only_You_Can_Save_Mankind]. It's about Space Invaders, but it has actual substance, including characters and a plot, and it's hilarious and insightful to boot.

Star Wars is an exception, it started as a series of novels and as such has an elaborate universe within which to build unique stories and gameplay experiences. But Space Invaders is an empty husk, one of the most sparse game designs in history. "Aliens are approaching, shoot them with your lasers." That makes an OK premise for a game, but there is nothing that will distinguish it from the thousands of films already made about the exact same set-up. The only potential this has is that the producer or director will envision a new approach to this familiar set-up and the final result will transcend the source material. But considering the "snatch up as many retro licenses as we can grab and turn them into easy money" approach that the studios are taking to these old arcade/atari 2600 franchises, there's no reason to expect as much.

That's right, I've slammed the ENTIRE EARTH into my face to express what a stupid idea this is!

Are we someday going to look back wistfully at those halcyon days when Hollywood was content with making merely terrible knockoff movies of current-day franchises?
I raise you all by using a *faceTimeSpaceImplosion*

I...I think I'm going to be sick. They are seriously considering this? Hell, let's just make a movie out of Pong while we're at it.

Please tell me this is a sick prank, just a sick prank that someone did to make gamers worldwide freak out in anger at this anouncement. Who in the name of the gods thinks this is a good idea? It's not like there's a huge back story to work with either.

First that business with Infinity Ward, Valve teases Portal 2 and Steam for the mac...AND NOW THIS. What is going on with the games industry as of late?!

I'm almost convinced that I somehow got high without my knowledge and am stuck in some crazy dream land.

Somebody help...

Ohhh.....this will not end well...not well at all. I shudder at what this could be, and applaud the person who can excrete a movie from the simplest game next to pong.

No it is not a Rick Roll. I just don't know how to post a YouTube video in a forum.

Now you see, if they'd bought Zero Wing from Toaplan, THEN they'd have a movie that would sell itself to geeks.

You have no chance to survive make your time.
