Why is it that galaxies could pull off some pretty sweet free world flying but a game how many years later can't...

If i want a fly forward shooter I would hop in the gummi ship for Kingdom Hearts 2. Which if the trailer is anywhere near the initial product, Kingdom Hearts seems to have done it better. Which actually sounds really sad saying it out loud then it did inside my head.
You do realize the flying in TOR isn't an integral part of the game (from what I understand at least). I'm not saying they hashed it in there just for the hell of it; I mean, this is Bioware we are talking about, they tend to make quality stuff and with good reasoning and intentions. I would love to play an EVE detailed Star Wars space combat mmo, but the KotOR universe and TOR isn't built around space combat, nor should it necessarily be. I'm just glad they have something like that in there, and the fact that it resembles a game that has a spot close to many gamers' hearts.

If that was a stand alone game i would play it! Looks so awesome!

that makes sense of course, as Starfox 64 is in my top 5 favorite games of all time

The space combat for The Old Republic is looking pretty good. It may not give the freedom to fly anywhere in space but it stills looks pretty fun. Avoiding the asteroids and flying in between the two capital ships was pretty good.

personally id rather have full freedom. makes the starship and exploration and travel "item". atm it just looks like you might randomly get thrown into some stupid mission on a quest or when you travel final fantasy style.

i mean it looks fun, but if they dont spread it out just right, with many many unique variations, it just wont work

It looks terrible and boring as hell.

Overall, space combat in Star Wars Galaxies is far better that what was demonstrated in that video.

Ya know...some people might harp on and on about space combat needing more FREEDOM!!! *eaglecry*

But I really think freedom in games is vastly overrated most of the times and few times can it be pulled off well. And to pull it off well requires a great amount of care, patience, time, energy and money. And considering that most of that will go into making the MMO ground-based portion solid, I'm not surprised at all they decided upon a route like this.

But you know what? I love it. Plus with a promise of PVP and Co-op down the road...I can imagine them going the Rogue Squadron route eventually to accomodate those two styles of play. And that certainly won't be so bad at all.

Dear god do they need to get themselves some new music. So tired of hearing that awful tune in every Star Wars game ever.

On a tangent of that same note, the sad part about this is that it's dragging the baggage of the licence with it. It's a great way to get your funding, and It's a great way to market it to an audience of fans that already exist, but a clean slate would be nice. You could have new stories about new interesting people without having to slot them in to squishy time periods and playing 'connect the dots' with character, faction and canon links. New weapons and ships and stuff. Fun fun.

*sigh*...dream on. Who knows, this might be good. Still not playing it though.

[seriously, watch the trailer with no sound (so no annoying music and traditional Star Wars laser sounds) and you might not even recognise it as a Star Wars game.]

You can play it by yourself for the most part in the MMOG world. It's not got a separate single-player campaign.
My concern is more about the gameplay. If I need a guild or whatever other MMO nonsense to fully enjoy the game then I'm won't be into it. I want it to be a huge KOTOR game with optional multiplayer rather than a WoW clone with some Bioware flair. So far, it seems like the latter to me.
You don't need a guild. Some quests are designed with groups in mind, because obviously they've got to cater for that audience as well, but you'll be able to do most stuff by yourself if you want.

That looks suitably epic for a Star Wars game, if you ask me.
I even think that setting it on rails may be a good idea. That way, you are headed towards some enemies and get into the action right from the start, which makes it a more (yes, I know everyone hates that word) cinematic experience. It may not satisfy the more traditional space-sim fans who are looking for deeper, more realistic space combat, but as a simple narrative device to immerse the player into the world, it will do its job well enough. After all, this game is a MMORPG and not a game focused on space-combat.
Anyway, was it just me or had the space part much better graphics than the rest of the game?

Ah, kicking it old-school.

Bringing back memories of Lylat Wars, Starfox Assault, parts of Rogue Squadron (Death Star Trench Run) and most of Rebel Strike. <3

Ok I guess this means I have to name my first character "Wolf O'Donnell", find someone named "Fox McCloud", and scream at him "CAN'T LET YOU DO THAT STAR FOX!", while another guy in his party called "Peppy Hare" yells "DO A BARREL ROLL".

GET THIS GUY OFF ME FOX!

Seriously, if one of the first few hundred characters isn't named after a Starfox character I will rage horribly.
And on that note, we need a new Starfox game.

Looking good to me! I'd have to get my hands on to try it out to be 100% sure, of course, but so far looking good.

So it's like the space combat in Lego: Star Wars. Hopefully they'll be less button-mashing.
As a side-note, it seems like Bioware never does anything wrong.
Space turret in KotOR that was wrong... The way they handle DA2 seem wrong to me so far,
But so far nothing really to hate in SWtOR

This looks awesome.

Unfortunately, I've made a conscious decision to not get this game until Wookies are a playable class.

And then my dream of a wookie bounty hunter, complete with jetpack, will be complete.
