How would I change the series?
Actually, I wouldn't; I'd push it along. I dunno about everyone else but I enjoy the accidental comedic element of the Resident Evil series. The same way that Zombieland and Shaun of the Dead are stand out because they're both comedy and zombie films, Resident Evil is a stand-out game series to me and a number of my friends.
So my ideas for RE6? Lets go bananas!
First off, we collect all the main characters: Chris, Claire, Jill, Leon, Sheva, Ada, Rebecca, Carlos. Any other major-ish "good guys" I've forgotten and are still alive. Put them all into a city/island/building/etc where zombies attack. Perhaps a "Zombie-Fighters of the Year Awards" celebration gets bio-weapon-terrorized?
The gameplay switches between the main characters who each have a certain ability set/aim:
Play as Chris and Carlos to bash through heavy waves of the infected.
Jill, backed up by Ada, lockpick and swing-shot their way through stealth missions.
Claire and Rebecca team up to aid the injured.
Leon and Sheva work together to call for help in the upper-buildings radio transmission centre.
The villains would be a mix of old and new. I'm thinking a couple of "heads" of the bad guys, each with a different virus specialty. A big, buff T-Virus user. A quicker, agile G-Virus infected. The brainy T-Veronica specialist. You would have to battle and defeat each as you progressed through the game.
The multiplayer options here are limitless. What I would like to see would be each of the scenarios I listed above playing out in tangent. So like, you'd get 7 other friends online with you and you each take a character. Then you split up in the listed groups and work to the end. If you finish before another group you can choose to assist them. Say Jill and Ada were finished and waiting on CHris and Carlos. They could catch up with the boys and help them finish their mission.
