Wouldn't surprise me. They always say that women can be more passionate (or obsessed) about these things than guys normally* are.

*Corollary [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/corollary]: Don't fucking trust statistics; I just wanted to put that out there.

Dammit guys, we're losing! We need to start playing more video games for longer times! We can't let the girls win! We need to...*voice and diction gets increasingly childish and immature*

Whats more hardcore than spending hour after hour attempting to down a newly released boss?

Well, actually that doesn't prove anything.
If a girl plays everquest 10 hours a day (example, har har) and a boy plays everquest 8 hours a day, the girl probably plays that one game while the boy plays 8 hours on Everquest, 8 hours on WoW and 6 hours on TF2.

It's scary isn't it. For all the hours you put into WoW, there's a girl out there better than you.

The mother of one of my friends met her current partner on Everquest. So..Well..That just goes to show. I'm not sure what it goes to show, but it somehow bolsters the point made in this article.

Well, not that i don't like the fact there are more boobs playing games(sorry if that seems sexist to anyone else). But those chose a really bad game to test, I mean Everquest? Really? Atleast use something that is current, everquest has been around for like 20 years, we can choose better. Maybe it's just that girls like the older games?

So... if first person shooters are the most casual (which most people would completely disagree with you with), then what is the most hardcore? Puzzle games?
No genre by it self is hardcore. Hell, no game is hardcore.
But I think we can agree certain genres are played far more casually.

And there are more "casual genres" then shooters.

Like the recent occurrence (see: plague) of Rhythm games using fake plastic instruments.
Puzzle games are pretty casual. Bejeweled on the cellphone for example
First person shooters are played by every one too. Which is fine. But that doensn't make one a hardcore gamer.

A hardcore gamer is an enthusiast who uses gaming as their main hobby and is knowledgeable about gaming's history. The hardcore gamer plays a variety of genres and seeks out new gaming experiences.

The hardcore gamer doesn't play it safe and is rare even on gaming forums.

It's a good thing there's no hostility out there to drive women away from gaming.

Seriously... I would date her.. she looks cute in the face, I'd always have a buddy to eat with since I hate eating out alone, and we'd have great conversation because our interests obviously would be the same.
I mean seriously, a girl I can talk about Disgaea strategies with? I'd marry her in a heartbeat.

Kinda like assuming that all boys like blue, enjoy FPS titles, and go to films like Saw and actually enjoy it.
Well, um... I-...I guess it wouldn't help to say I only liked the first one?

OT: Studies are usually thrown together like this using some form of Wiki. Girl gamers are not special gifts from some magical dimension. Who cares if (girl) gamers have logged more hours a week in Everquest 2? That doesn't necessarily mean they're more hardcore anyway. Addiction =/= hardcore badassery.

One thing I find interesting are all the responses looking to discredit or deny the conclusions presented here ("That can't be right', 'They're not really doing anything hard, just chatting/"social" stuff' It's EQ2', etc). It gives off a collective sense of defensiveness and an attempt to quantify the info based upon that by those feeling threatened somehow.

I agree. She is adorable.

A lot of the responses to this post seem incredibly defensive. Does it really matter if some women are more "hardcore"? There will always be women (and men) that don't fit stereotypes and we should be happy for that. It seems like there are a lot of rigid views of how female gamers are and if you subscribe to that bull**** you're probably only going to run into that type of female gamer.

If the top male gamers play approx. 51 hrs/week, and female gamers play approx. 57 hrs/week, but both retain the exact same stature within the gaming world....who's being more efficient with their time, eh? :D

Don't get me wrong, I've met girl gamers who can kick me 'round the block and then some, I'm just suggesting that this data is not the best argument that this article could've presented :3

also, win for the girl-screaming @ screen pic, and epic win for culturally-oblivious parents and their childrens' Poke-ee-mans :D
