Okay, to ask the obvious question since I have yet to actually turn it on, but what is a Pokedex, and how far do you need to be in the game to get one?

Obviously I need to benefit from your sage-like wisdom here. Pokemon is one of the only RPGs I've never played which is why I figure with time to kill coming up that I'll give it a shot.

The Pokedex is the in-game thing that keeps track of all the Pokemon you've seen and captured. You get it automatically very, very early in the game. I'd guess that if you can play the game for an hour you can get the Pokedex. I think you get it after the opening sequence, after you've picked your first Pokemon and won a battle.

Nope, completely free. You just go in and download it from Gamestop, but I think you need to have Mystery Gift unlocked in order to do so.

I'm definitely getting Jirachi. The way I see it, HeartGold (I'm getting that) and SoulSilver will be the last great hurrah of Pokemon. Gold and Silver were easily the greatest of the early games, and Gen II was excellent. I might as well re-ignite my inner pokefan and go all out with this. The game had might as well go out with a bang!

...Although I'm 100% certain they will remake Ruby and Sapphire too after this. I will not touch it.
