Gaia from Grandia. I never did beat that game...
Also almost every boss fight from Armored Core: 4 Answer, especially Answerer. Armored Core is a great, but sadistic game series.

Edit:

Lu Bu in the Dynasty Warriors series. End of discussion. Any game he is in he is the hardest character to kill and when he first shows up can one shot you.
Lu Bu was a pain in the ass.

Not technically a boss, but the speeder bike gang on the tatooine mission of Shadows of the Empire...damn speeder bike goes too damn fast, and the second you hit anything, your momentum drops to zero, and you better be going as fast as possible, or else you'll never beat them to Luke's training area.

Also, 4 armed skeletal swordsman in Tales of Symphonia. Maybe I just didn't grind enough, but damn...he always cut my team to shreds within 60 seconds

yea but then he gets his yeti buddies and you end up getting chased by like 4 of them and they will always get you T.T.
also I'm surprised no one has mentioned vanitas remnant from kingdom hearts birth by sleep, and so by extension unknown as you had to be remnant to battle him.

Golem from Chrono Trigger. You can lose without consequence but it always bothered me that I couldn't kill it. Sure, I could do it using New Game + but I've always had bad luck with it while playing it.

Playing against the four Greater Fiends in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. NOT. HUMANLY. POSSIBLE. Seriously. I want to see anyone beat that mission without using Rachel as a glitch (even then, it's damn near impossible). That is simply not fair. I've been able to beat every other boss--except fighting game ones because I'm terrible at the game--through enough practice, but not that. Cannot be done.

Never actually beat him..... should pick that game up again and defeat the old man once and for all.
Heh, I never could beat that game either.. until a few years ago when I moved. I found a copy buried with my old nes and played it. Btw to beat him only bubble lead works on dr. wily at the very end. So try not to use it up until then.

Gill, Street Fighter 3.
Every time I see his bi-pigmented visage I want to punch a kitten to death.

Not that I punch kittens, mind you.

Going far back: 9-ball(s) from the first armored core.

More recent: Cynthia was extremely frustrating in pokemon platinum.

The last Guy In prototype I could take him but the whole time limit thing really screwed with me and limited my options.

From a historical perspective the Four Horsemen Encounter from Naxxramas in Vanilla WoW is the longest a boss fight has gone unconquered since its release. It took 7 weeks of practice and attempts from the best guilds in the world before they gave up their phat lewts.

The final battle in Prototype.
For all my helicopter-hijacking skills, I kept taking the pilot seat just in time for a flying hunk of deck to smack me out of the sky, and kept getting insta-killed by the Devestator attack.
Ugh, THAT battle. I did beat it on normal...barely. Nobody can say the final boss battle is anti-climactic. One of the hardest boss battles I've ever played for any game. I don't even want to know how batshit insane it would be to beat it on a higher difficulty.

I KNOW! If he doesn't get you THAT DOES!

Zhou Tai in Dynstay Warriors 4 says otherwise.

Zhou Tai's Musous is a world of epic and win.

The last boss is easy. All you have to do is run around grabbing various things and lobbing them at him.

Going way back to being barely knee-high to a grasshopper, Crocomire from Super Metroid. Having to shoot him into the lava, rather than a set health I could deplete, killed me many, many, MANY times. Eventually got my older brother to beat him, continued with game. Came back years later and wiped the floor with him. Older reflexes equal more awesome classic gameplaying.

You know the trick spot to stand right? That makes it way easier.

I hate that I didn't find out there was a "go faster" button until years after the fact.
Learn that from xkcd?

Well, I went the obvious way of smacking him to death and was DANGEROUSLY close to timing out for the 5th time. I just couldn't figure out how to deal enough damage without out getting beaten to death at the time. Throwing stuff hadn't been necessary for any boss or any enemy prior so it never occurred to be to start grabbing the planes. There weren't that many and they were far away or destroyed in the chaos. I'll have to reinstall that game at some point and try that out, it's been awhile anyway...
