Squall from FFVIII, i am a big fan of the series, but Squall just pisses me off. He does nothing but complain and moan and be genertally emo, and then for some reason he gets put into a position of authority. WHY?
I actually like Squall a lot and I guess because of that, I'm sort of able to justify him (Like any other fan of whatever would but here it goes for all that it's worth).

At the beginning, he is pretty whiny but unlike other characters, he doesn't want their pity and he doesn't go around complaining to others. He just wants to be left alone but everyone else just keeps pulling him back in. We know he's unhappy and stuff because we can see what he thinks, but he rarely walks up to someone ans says "HEY! LIFE SUCKS!". When he's put in a position of authority, even HE is surprised and reluctantly accepts because he also realizes everyone else is pretty much not fit or just plain dumb.

At least he eventually realizes he's being weird for the most of the game and gets over it. Zidane had one of those moments too. I think even Tidus did (Although I don't like him that much). You know, it didn't take them sequel after sequel after prequel to figure that out. *cough*

Alistair was very annoying in Dragon Age: Origins.
D: I loved Alistair so so much. He was a fun character and always got some funny lines in with the serious tone of the game.

Personally, I dislike... Marcus Phenoex from Gears of War, any main protagonist of a Call of Duty Game ever (minus Reznov), annnnd I can't think of anything else for now. Nothing really jumps to mind, to be honest; I rarely dislike a character to the extent that I remember them for it.

She's not the worst video game character ever, but I really didn't like Shaundi in Saints Row 3. What in the world happened to her between the second game and the third one?

The helping robot assistant from Skyward Sword. Boring as help, stupidly written, and treats the player like a complete idiot.

What? You think maybe if I push a button it may go down? I would have minded her stupid comments less if she STILL didn't act like she was smarter than me. Inanimate objects are smarter than her, I'm fairly certain I can manage to be smarter than that.

You know, going into this thread I thought I would have to think long and hard about this, go through dozens of games, and finally pick out somebody I really hated.

Then I look at the first page, and there's ME3's star child. I'd actually managed to forget about him for a while. I guess I don't need to do any more thinking on the subject...

If I have to name somebody else, it's either Miranda or Kei Leng. The first is a stupid evil whore who somehow managed to insert herself in command of my ship, and the second is a hideous Mary Sue who repeatedly got curbstomped in actual combat, then entered a cutscene just to declare all my abilities null and himself the winner.

Outside of Mass Effect... dunno. Always hated Lady Aribeth in the first Neverwinter Nights. And Elanee in the second. No more Bioware? Fine...

Which means I can't be smited for a low content post.

Edit: Sure, Toad doesn't flip you off any more, or even inform you of being just slightly too slow. But he's still really, really annoying.

Every major character in World of Warcraft. They're either warmongers, whiny bitches or just plain stupid (I'm looking at you, Thrall). And when they didn't fuck up the world they upstaged the players.

Captcha: quality time
Right. Back to playing Endless Space.

my vote goes to:-

Yes lets see crappy character design check, paper thin personality check, annoying as hell check, impossible to ignore check, I fail to see anything decent about this character at all his constant laughing whenever he does a move is annoying in itself but its even more annoying when its from a buff bold guy in speedos piledriving you into the ground....again.

I also have a strong dislike for Garrus from ME everytime I see him I just want to punch him in his stupid bug face. Hes not the worst character ever but I think my dislike has been heightened by having him rammed down my throat since ME3 especially since he died in ME2 (I made sure of that).

Takumi Nishijō from Chaos;Head but he was made to be a intentionally horrible and unlikeable character so... im not sure this one counts.

Or Lester the unlikely.

I thought Squall matured over the course of the game. At first he is a loner and is not really used to having many people to talk to so he is probably lacking in the social skills needed to be considered normal. However, as the game progresses he starts to talk and open up to people that he trusts and figures out how to lead them (I do admit I wish they had worked a little more on that) I mean we even see him smile at the end which kind of beats someone like Tidus who has random emotions all over the place and is just so damn annoying (talking about his literal LOL moment Yuna).

wheatly from portal 2. yes, i know he's a key member of the plot but he's just so annoying and stupid... although you can't really blame him since that was how he was programmed.

And then Navi. Hey, YOU listen Navi...shut up.

Cedric from King's Quest V is a thousand times worse. At least Navi gives useful information and helps you Z-target. Cedric does NOTHING at all. He says nothing useful. He doesn't do anything useful to help Graham in his quest. He isn't brave and cowards at the first sign of danger. He warns you about danger...after it is too late to do anything about it. He has a very annoying voice. He gets captured several times through out the game and you have to rescue him. After a journey with Cedric, you would wish, no beg Navi to come back.
Cedric is useful, He warns you about poisonous snakes

Roy Earle in LA Noire. He wasn't just annoying, but also a massive bastard in the context of the story. One of my biggest satisfactions in that game was running him over repeatedly when he was your partner on a case.

The collected cast of any one Final Fantasy game.
wow can you be anymore general then that? (quite a bias I must say sir/ma'am)
I'd love to be more specific, sir, but I have played most FF games, and it's the one series I can remember where not only do I fail to connect to one single character, but usually by mid-game I'm wishing a meteor will fall on them all and replace them with someone interesting and less obnoxious.

I hate my generic avatar from western rpgs because he has no personality other than mannequin.

As much as I hate annoying characters in any video game, they are still better than my wooden doll from Western RPGs. In order for me to feel annoyed by them there needs to be something there to begin with. Those designers did not give up and say, "you do it" with characters.
I dunno... I'd rather play with a character that starts as tabula rasa and which I can define in my own way, affect the story through my own gameplay choices and playstyle, than play as a set character with an established personality which I'm effectively only guidding along on his already pre-defined path. That's not roleplaying, that's just flipping the pages on a book.

Off the top of my head, Vanille from Final Fantasy 13. There's being silly and goofy, then there's this... thing.
I certainly understand the hate for Vanille, but I think she's a brilliant character. While I personally didn't find her THAT annoying that it ruined the game for me, her personality does makes her seem stupid, immature, and annoying. But as the game progresses and you learn more about the characters, you learn that that isn't who she is at all. She actually has a normal personality, and what she is like at the start of the game is just a cover that helps her hide from what she has done. She is the one that ruins everything for everyone, and she can't handle the guilt. And acting like she does is how she handles it. Sure, its a bad way of handling it, but that is the point. She isn't perfect. And thats why I think she is a great character.

But I can certainly understand why she would rub people the wrong way.
