Okay, epic fail. Pokemon designs started to go downhill after Gold and Silver, but at least Ruby and Sapphire kept the games suck-to-good pokemon ratio about 50/50. I honestly don't think I'm even going to play this game, or if I do I'm abandoning my starter at the first possible chance.
I like the look of the fire pig. Or Baykon, which I'm going to keep referring to it as even after the real names are revealed. The grass thing looks like a combination of cyndaquil and charmander, with maybe a hint of treecko. And the water thing - what?
However, I picked water for red, fire for silver, and grass for diamond. I never played ruby/sapphire, but I've now picked all 3 types, so I'm afraid I can't play this one - it would show type preference, and that's just not PC...
I'm still upset that Infernape didn't have some kind of 'flaming poop throw' attack...

When I saw the silhouettes, I had pretty low opinions of them but thought I might be surprised like I was with Zoroark. But this? The grass thing seriously looks like Treecko and Cyndaquil did the fusion dance (check out the yellow things on the shoulder to boot), the fire one looks ok which is a surprise because I thought the silhouette looked bizarre, but that last one? I mean, given the shell, I'd say it's obviously supposed to be an otter, but it looks so...ugly. I'm usually pretty open-minded when it comes to pokemon, but these three just suck. And there's really no starting pokemon I disliked before now. These guys better have some damn amazing evolutions, but everytime I look at that water pokemon I think of that blue cat thing from some other anime. Doraemon?
As for the supposed upped ages, I'd be pretty much neutral on that if it didn't make Black and White seem like they're starting to use fan ideas. Which is never a good sign, and the names already seemed like they were taken straight from a "name the next two pokemon games!" thread. I doubt they're older than 12 or 13 anyway. Heck, if the magazine didn't say the protagonists were older I wouldn't think they were any older than 10 just from that picture. At least, not based on past artwork, since they both look less mature than FR/LG's 10-year-old protagonists...

Gotta admit, these pokemon look ok. Maybe I'm still hung up over the fake designs I've seen and how terrible they looked (can't blame the artists though, they had little to work with). Looks to be though that this will be the second time I choose the Grass Starter. Squirtle, Totadile, Treecko, Piplup, and now... this... dude...

I'd have to see the evolved forms but those... well there not good. I know the first form is the "cute" form, eventually evolving into a more cool and/or beastly form by the end, but those aren't so much cute as just stupid looking.
