Fucking smurfs.
While these two sentences I'm absolutely in favor of, I'm actually disappointed that it won't be an MMO. I was really looking forward to a 40k MMO done by Joe MAD. He is the one man who could make 'epic' into 'unspeakably epic'.

Another generic single player game that will feel lackluster and empty because it was originally designed to be filled with players. I'm looking at you Kingdoms of Amarula or whatever.

It really sucks that so many people got laid off. As someone currently striving against the odds to find a job I highly sympathise, and wish them the best of luck finding something else.

That said, from a purely consumer point of view I'm actually more excited about this. MMOs have never been my thing, and it's very tempting to think that if the game is released as a single player experience then the writing and storytelling will almost certainly be a lot better and more involving, without the crutch of 'oh it's an mmo, it's not about that' that previous incarnations of this idea may or may not have leaned on....

Can't compete with WoW? That's odd, because I'm pretty sure The Old Republic was the most successful launch in MMO history and continues to hold the record for highest amount of paying subscribers after release. I could also list the dozen or so MMOs that make bank, but I think you get the idea.
And how many wow killers have went bust.

Fuck yes! Not everyone wants MMORPGs - there's many things to be said for games that are about the game, not about stringing things out as long as possible to get the most out of subscriptions or "convenience" microtransactions!

Well there goes being anything other then a Space Marine. I mean it's not like a 40k MMO was going to let me play Tyranid or Necron anyways, but I'd least want to roll Ork. I wouldn't have been happy with a MMO anyways unless every faction was alone. They ruined WAR by focusing all the factions into chaos/order. It would have been a more popular game if all 6 factions warring amongst themselves.

So instead of WH40K based MMO they will do a WH40K based 3rdPS with chest high walls?

I do wonder, have they thought this through?
Where did you get that idea at all? They didn't mention any genres even once. They didn't even say the single player RPG part so I have no idea where the escapist got that especially with them not giving any sources. Also even Space Marine didn't use chest high walls so I really don't know where you got that idea.
You missed my point, it's not about mechanic of the game. It's about a massive amount of single player FPS games at the moment trying to capitalize on nostalgia. As you said yourself, we saw a WH40K single player game just recently, now we are getting another one.

I hope for your (and their) sake the new game is distinctive enough.
If you are a spacemarine you don't need a wall, only eldar need walls...

Call me the pessimist, but I am not reading this as an "upgrade". I am reading this as "we realize if we released against WoW and SWTOR we would tank, badly. We can't cancel it outright as we have spent way too much investor money to get here (although we did think through every conceivable way to pull that off without getting sued) so instead we will release it as a half assed single player retread that it was never built to be. Sure it will probably tank, but not as badly. It will recoup some of the money and noone will be able to sue us since we did deliver a releasable product, just not what we said we would or spent all of the money on."

Yeah, this is going to go well... NOT.

If you're a space marine you are the wall for lesser mortals to cower behind.

Unless you're in terminator armour, in which case you're a wall wearing another, larger wall capable of kill things by throwing walls at them.

So now WoW's killing rival MMOs in development? Guess that'll show those uppity Warhammer nerds that Warcraft is better and not some dime-store ripoff.

Okay, I'm kidding, relax Warhammer fanboys. Though seriously, enough of the "Warcraft ripped off Warhammer" stuff, it's annoying.

I'm a little worried it's just going to be an MMO that you play by yourself now. I mean if these guys have spent years making huge, expansive maps for thousands of players, and now there is just one player, I'm not really seeing how the shift will be smooth.

Who knows maybe it will even turn out a good singleplayer RPG. We can always hope.
As an MMO the game would have been a guaranteed failure. Smart move then.
Shame about the employees, but the old project was doomed from the start anyway.

Very few. You only hear about the failures because fanboys are quick to revel every time an MMO with a big marketing campaign fails--something to do with justifying to themselves the months of in-game time they've spent with WoW. Also, these same people jump on a forum and declare an MMO dead a month after release because it doesn't have several million subscribers. Whether they are just so used to the WoW numbers or they just want to believe the enemy is dying, I don't know. But nine times out of ten, an MMO that is said to be dying is doing just fine. Christ, Aion is still around and so is Rift, Everquest one, Everquest 2, Champions Online, City of Heroes, Star Trek Online--and I haven't even mentioned the shit ton of free to play and "non-AAA" titles that are still making the publishers money years and years after release.

WoW is an aged giant. It exists now solely due to how much time the rabid playerbase has put into it. It's sort of like when a new console comes along; you know the new one is better, but you have so many games for the old one that you spend a lot of time researching and delving into forums to find every little problem with the newer model and delight when it has terrible issues (not unlike what PS3 owners do when they hear about a Red Ring, or what 360 owners do when they hear about a game looking better on their console of choice). It happens when an improved version of anything comes out--phones, TVs, cars, boys/girls at school, lol. No one wants to admit the game they spent possibly a year of their life (in game hours) playing is obsolete and they don't want to start again. It's outdated and outmatched by many games. Old Republic is doing a great deal better than WoW was at this time after launch and I've no doubt it will be around for many years to come.

WoW is living on borrowed time at the moment. New players are going elsewhere for their first MMO fix and old players are leaving fairly quickly. In, say, another year or maybe two, WoW will be at least half it's size. The beast is bleeding out. Not long now.

Well, to be fair, Warcraft did borrow a heck of a lot (read: almost everything) from Warhammer. If you sat someone down and showed them Warhammer and Warcraft books without context, they'd surely say they were the exact same thing--not even that they are similar.

Not that Warhammer is some pure being of originality; the folks behind the Warhammer brands did their share of copy-paste-modify.

Not sure what to think about this. I was psyched about a 40K MMO (40k nut here) and was really interested in playing this online with a few friends. Now though, we get the chance for a kickass RPG with multiplayer bits. So I guess as long as it comes out eventually, I'll be happy for different reasons.

Thank god. Ok, it sucks that people los ttheir jobs, but at least it won't be an MMO. I've been praying for a Warhammer RPG for ages now, and I can only hope they make it good...

Just once I want a 40K product that does not just focus on Space Marines.

I always found the Imperial Guard way more fun to both play, and to experience.
Getting to play as a Commissar I think would be fun.

Do you want to play like Ciaphas Cain? Or will you HERESY BLAM! everyone in existence?
Hell ANY OTHER FACTION BESIDES SPACE MARINES!

"In the Space Marine future there is only SPACE MARINE!"
BLAH!
Playing as tyranid would be awesome. Picture this: it's a druid type class; when you change 'forms,' you dig under ground and your new form pops up. You can be a tanking machine like the Carnifex, a stealthy damage dealer like a Lictor, or a ranged damage and healing class like a Biovore--you could fire balls of genetic material onto allies that act like heals over time and stuff and just fire mines at enemies or lay them as traps with AoE targets. You could even have your travel form be a Ripper swarm (picture a few Rippers jittering and running around in a group). Gargoyle for your flight form, too.

UGH.

Why do they make so many Space Marine games when there are so many cool ways to do other stuff. I just thought of that shit in less than a minute and that's just one race! Surely the Warhammer teams could think of some amazing shit. Take a risk for once in your life!
