They're right, you can't strictly apply numbers to art, it's all subjective.

On the other hand, those numbers can be a general indication of how good the game is when put all together. The difference between 70 and 71 is nothing, but the difference between 70 and 80 can mean a big difference in the general consensus.

Just saying.

Also, Homefront was mediocre. Not bad, but not great. The game might be art in the "games are art" sense, but it's certainly not *great* art.

What I don't get is that you can't "quantify" art. But still it's not a 71... It should be higher?? Lol poor guy.

You know, they could always get a couple of their employees, pretend they are off site reviewers, and bump their score up a bit! I mean its a perfect plan! Nothing could possibly go wrong with that, right?

I wholeheartedly agree with that last statement, and I think that the fixation with applying scores to everything that moves has ultimately done more harm than good to the usefulness of videogame reviews over the years.
So, you guys adding arbitrary scores to your reviews last year doesn't make you look like giant hypocrites right now how? Really, I'm gonna be quite interested to see how you'd respond that one.

Yes it is, THQ.

71 isn't bad.

WHY ARE REVIEWS NOW BASICALLY ON A SCALE OF 7-10?

Anything below a 7 is somehow shit-on-a-stick.
Well since 5 would be average, 6 would be ok, 7 is good, 8 is really good, 9 is great and 10 is amazing.
I'm actually nostalgic for the old Gamespot review system, from YEARS back...That actually kinda made sense. 6s weren't immediately dismissed as trash...
The standards now are:
0-5: Laughable crap, it doesnt even work. Some gamers may play it for the lulz (I love the Vampire Rain demo because it sucks so much)

6: The game sucks but some people may find themselfs still playing for whatever reason (unique game mechanic, etc) but the game still isnt worth 60$

7: It sparks some interest but it wont blow your mind, it still has flaws that get in the way.

8: The game is good, even if it isnt interesting the 8 means that it is a good game overall. 60$ start to sound ok.

9: It is both interesting and has good quality. It is worth 60$ if its your cup of tea.

This is how things are seen, and I understand.

I dont have a problem with buying XBL Arcade games that have a 5.0 score since they are cheap but buying a 5.0 game for 60$ is kind of hard to do. The good of it isnt worth it.

It has a lot to do with the price.

Yeah this shit really pisses me off.And whats worse any publicity(e.g. indie games)the shows like gamespot won't touch it.And the independent reviewers normally rate a game more harshly so on a site like meta critic its gonna have a much lower score. And this normally wouldn't annoy me accept for idiots like my friend who will type in Game Xs score on Google and will get meta critic *sigh* this whole industry has become pussiefied.

Maybe I should have used that excuse in high school art class. Damn low marks.

(The following is a real conversation from back then)

Teacher: What are those you painted in the sky?
Me: Ummm...They're clouds?
Teacher: They look like rocks! Do them over again and make them fluffier.
Me: *Sighs and re-does the clouds*
Teacher: They're too fluffy!

Probably easiest way to put it...
Prepatch - Like Call of Duty in hardcore mode
Postpatch - Like regular Call of Duty

Originally, people would die after a few bullets, but a lot of people complained. They nurfed the snipers (which were overpowered anyway), but they did something else that nurfed the rest of the guns. Not sure if it is lower damage or increased player health or what, but it isn't like it was prepatch.
Could you please explain how in any way that Homefront is a COD ripoff like you accuse it of being.
Really? Show me where I said it was copying Call of Duty... Oh wait, I didn't. Go troll somewhere else.

What did they do, exactly?

Theatre (and movies) is given scores and it is very much considered art. It's up to us as consumers to take things with a pinch of salt, you may enjoy a show even if a big named critic gave it 3 stars, however if it hits the 2 star rating it is very likely to be a piece of poo on a stick. Same with game scores.
Some will even hate art that is given a five star review: "Krapp's last Tape" with Michael Gambon playing the lead, split the critics, some giving it 5 stars others giving it 1 (perfect for art in my opinion, because you should love or hate it, what a terrible reaction to get from an audience if they say "meh")

I would say that a 70% is a 3 star, if you like FPS then give it a go, I won't be buying coz I'm not a huge FPS fan ;)

So in short I don't think scoring negatively effects art it just helps us as consumers consider whether we want to invest money in it because neither video games or theatre are cheap. When I spend money on crap I'm get pretty annoyed.

Please do not try to start a flame war my friend because that will get nowhere. Your post sounded like it was saying that Homefront was just like cod which you say it didn't so I guess you could've kindly stated it instead of accusing people of trolling.

They're right about one thing: Scores can't be applied to art.

Good thing Homefront is about as far from art as games get.

The game was decent, but they set up so many answers and didn't answer them!
You had a shread of information about the asian man in your squad, one tiny bit of monolouge, a one-liner when you see north koreans handing on ropes from under a bride. "They burned down my house" he said. That could have been such a great path to explore, but no.... Rednecks with rocket launchers are much better!!
