Okay so this is what Todd Howard had to say about COD according to a gamasutra interview [http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/35678/Interview_Todd_Howard_On_The_Scope_Vision_Of_Skyrim.php]
You look at Call of Duty, the most popular game in the world, and that's actually pretty hardcore. At the end of the day, it's a hardcore game, has RPG elements in multiplayer, making classes, picking perks. I think the audiences are there, and we tend to make our game more for ourselves and other people who play a lot of games.
Now my personal view aside. Is that really a wise thing to say considering the current climate of worries about streamlining and accessibility that is developing around Skyrim. Whether or not COD is what he says it is I think most 'hardcore' RPG fans would take issue with that judging from what I have seen on these, and other forums regarding COD and it's playerbase.
What do you think of this statement? Is it somthing that worries you? Do you agree with him?
Personally I will be buying the game but this made me raise my eyebrows a little.
I agree with him, and I'm not worried. I agree with every change that they have made in skyrim. I was a little worried about the stats at first, but he is right, it is a quicker road to getting the control you want. In oblivion, you basically have to take endurance every level until it's at 100, and for max power, you want to take luck as well. This means that you really only get to choose one ability each level with an optimized character.
With a class like an assassin, for example, this means that you're light-armor skill will be relatively weak, because you will have to dump your stat points into agility for everything else. or with a casting character, you have to choose between more magicka, alteration, and mysticism, or faster regenerating magicka, restoration, and destruction. Meaning you basically have to pick between having more magicka, or being better at combat magic, which reduces your strength. With a character that is trying to do multiple things, the situation is even worse, reducing your strength in two or even 3 areas because you have so few choices.
With the new system, you control your characters abilities fully by adjusting your skills, as opposed to only half. This lets you do exactly what you want to do with your character without being ridiculously weak for the first 20-30 levels. A much better system.
