Except valve is by no way hurting for money, they're doing better than most developers/publishers could ever hope to do. They used to have a reputation for supporting their games for years after release, TFC, CS, etc. They even have a huge structured digital distribution system that allows them to effortlessly patch their software. It also prints them money.Kwil said:Yes, damn them for wanting to pay their developers! How dare they ask for more money for something that's going to be bigger than the original, with a significantly improved AI director, more types of zombies, more weapons, and a completely new system of combat in the form of melee. Why, they should just provide all of that for free.13lackfriday said:That would be a legitimate argument, except the new massive update system Valve, through Steam, has perfected renders it null.
Anything they were unsatisfied with, they could just gradually phase out with new updates that would also bring in the new content of the sequel.
So basically, repackaging L4D and slapping a "2" on it is totally unnecessary.
I mean look at CD projekt, a much smaller developer. They released the witcher in 2007. A year later they re-released the witcher enhanced edition, an ultra polished version of the game with extra content, and allowed all their customers who bought the original to upgrade to enhanced FOR FREE. Or look at Stardock, another shining example of a publisher who actually cares about their customers, who actually stands behind and supports their products for years after their release.
This is just greedy, and they can get away with it because they know there are millions of chumps out there that are going to buy it. Well I'm not going to be one of them. Their support of L4D has been poor at best, and now it's very apparent why.
I used to have the utmost respect for valve. I've been a fan since 1998 with the advent of halflife, but ever since they released steam their business practice (while smart) has gone down the ethical toilet.
- No refunds
- No price matching
- charging for content that used to be free
I mean seriously, if I buy a game, and the very next day it goes on sale for 50% off and they don't honor some kind of price match? That's crap. Bad luck maybe, but bad poor customer support. L4D2 above all else proves they don't give a shit about their customers, all they care about is the paycheck and I don't respect that.
Never did valve claim L4D was a "test" or a "beta" for L4D:2. Maybe they said that now at E3 to cover their ass, but when they released L4D they promised a revolutionary multiplayer co-op experience. This was hardly that, they barely ever patched it, and they waited 6 months to release the other 2 campaigns on vs mode (something that should have been available from the get go).
I think I've had it with valve, they've lost by business for awhile. I can't believe so many people on this forum are defending them. You guys need to get a clue, you're either fanboys beyond contemplation, or you've just been so brainwashed by this new digital age to the point that you're willing to pay for a map pack. I grew up in a different time I suppose, the days where mods, map packs, etc. were free, in fact they were expected to be free because they were huge selling points for software. Those days are long gone because now people are willing to pay an arm and a leg for barely any content. Maybe this is the fault of the DLC from the microsoft live arcade. Maybe when you kids start making your own money and stop mooching off your parents credit card, you'll understand how frustrating this is.
