Most of that manifesto is either a) untrue or b) negative bullshit.

If they dont like it, THEN DONT BLOODY PLAY IT.

EDIT: Do they not realise that L4D1 was just a test, that valve weren't particularly pleased with?

Screw them, i'll be enjoying the sequel while they moan.

/rant
You can't say "Just play L4D" because NOBODY ELSE WILL BE PLAYING IT. That is what they are saying. The thing that really bugs people is that ALL OF THIS COULD BE DLC. New maps, melee weapons, new special infected, etc. Do they have any reason to charge us for this when we've already paid good money for L4D? I thought that Valve prided themselves on consumer satisfaction, not profit. The art direction does go against a lot of things that Valve said in the commentary, and I want L4D to have atmosphere and be full of tension, which I just don't think they could do in bright daylight.
People still play COD4 despite COD: WaW being out, if L4D is truly better, then people will still play that.

But the graphics and gameplay are still pretty much the same, so it's fairly easy to view it as an expansion, and thus an improvement, for L4D1.

Pfeh, fans. An ungreatful bunch. The moment Valve starts acting like any other company they go all bent out of shape.

Thats why they're called fans. Someone starts a flame war and they make it worse!(fans fan the flames of flame wars)
But man, L4d is a good game. I don't mind buying a better version of it, but atleast have the decency to price it at an expansion or something(they probably won't though because like you said....)

As if people are complaining about them bringing out a new game, yeah maybe they're bringing it out a bit fast, but it's still another 5 months away... They could polish it up by then.

Oh no, Valve took things people asked for from a game (more weapons, routes, a story apparently), improved the engine, made a better AI director, added new infected
Oooooh, I hope they put the Screamer in this time, seemed such a shame they took it out.

valve is releasing L4D2 a little fast but the origional did get old because of the lack of any story or explanation about the zombies. i hope they add some plot into this one. but valve needs to work on Half-life more

Uh, isn't that a good thing? VALVe not being like any other company? So you'd be fine if VALVe took EA's approach to games and stuffed DRM into every game they sold? What about Activision, selling us 15 different versions of Half-Life in a year? There's a reason why people like VALVe for not being like every other company...

I'm too lazy to search through the whole topic but I want to make a point. This is not to bash the Boycott Group but more a valve defense/speculation.

The Orange Box was released to try and get the 360 playing other FPSs besides Halo. Microsoft welcomed it with open arms. There was some QQ about PC and 360 not being able to play together, mostly because of Microsoft wanting PCers to pay for xbox live if they wanted to play with their 360 counter parts. This is Microsoft's first annoyance to valve.

As we all know valve likes to continue to release updates and patches for games they have completed. Team Fortress 2 had the medic update and initially valve promised that the 360's update would come out simultaneously with the PC's. Microsoft threw a fit. TF2 Orange box would be getting download-able content for free. Microsoft said no. Valve said yes. It would not be until the Heavy Update that the 360 would receive updates. Again Microsoft pissed off valve.

When Left 4 Dead was released for the 360 it became immensely popular. It began selling almost as much as it's PC counter part. Valve began to notice that it was an unfinished product and created a patch to fix various 360 and PC issues. When they released the patch for the PC the promised that the 360 would be coming soon. It took about three months for the patch to come out due to Microsoft's delays.

Now from what I can assume is that Valve probably wanted to release more content for Left 4 Dead like they had promised, but Microsoft being the money pigs they are probably would try and stop them like they did with Team Fortress 2, probably even cut future or current deals they have with the company. Solution? Create the patch as Left 4 Dead 2. Players can whine as much as they want but it really comes down to money. And valve not being able to release future games on the 360 would be a heavy blow to their company.

But that's just what I think.

The guy who made E.T and Superman 64 is not working at Valve. :p

Anyway..I'll be waiting to flame the game when it comes out and it sucks. If it doesn't suck and turns out to be great..who will remenber this?

But its still sad that another year is going to pass and we aint going to hear anything about Half Life 2:Episode 3.

Nice logo.

Dunno why they take such offense to the music though. It's supposed to be New Orleans, right? Makes sense to me.

Still, their point about having two similar games out at the same time is going to have a negative effect on community numbers on both sides. Unless L4D2 is actually that good.

I might get the game, but why can't ValvE just release everything wanted in L4D2 as an update?

The thing is, I preffered Bill, Louis, Francis and Zoey, and now we don't get to keep them!

Is it really all that bad? Left 4 Dead 2 may be more of an incremental update than an all-out zombie revolution but that's hardly unusual in a sequel and given Valve's track record, producing a follow-up to a major hit game in the span of a single year strikes me as a step in the right direction, not something to complain about. Half-Life 2 came out four-and-a-half years ago and we don't even have a release date for Episode 3 yet!
I'd say its a side step if anything.

Why? We have enough companys to do that, its nice to have some (Blizzard / Valve) who take the time to make amazing games.

I'd rather wait for an amazing game then get a mediocre game now.

Take a look at TF2 for example. A much older game with much more content. Why? Because valve took the time to update it with free DLC over time instead of giving us TF3 6 months after release. This L4D2 thing is not like Valve at all.

All I care about is that I'm disappointed Francis, Louis, Zoey, and Bill are apparently gone. That and I'll probably have to re-earn the Zombie Genocidist achievement (only 11,000 kills away!)

Oh well, personally I think it would be cool to have a character editor so you can build your own survivor.

Meh, just because you share the same space as someone else doesn't mean you share the same ideas, that's sorta what Earth is all about these days.

Thanks for the welcome regardless, dont' worry about the pie, I hate pie.

To all those that complain that this should be DLC, I don't think Valve supports the practice. And yes, L4D was a test! They listened to complaints and improved on it, hence L4D2. Wait, wasn't Portal a test too?
But if it was a test, why'd they need to charge us for it? Beta testing is free, right?

Portal was paid for because it was a test of something that was already working quite well on its own, with little to no need for any revision at all. Also, because it came with two other games that had higher replay value.

Exactly. If someone is a test, you don't make people pay $50/50 EUR (or a bit less, 40?) if you're releasing a sequel to an online game in a year.

Besides, why buy a new game? This all sounds like L4D 1.5. New weapons, maps, characters, boss zombies... This all could be added in a DLC and you could even make people pay $20/EUR for it. I would buy it.

I mean, you don't even change engine so much.

Not an online game.
