I wonder how Valve does this? It makes other game companies look bad I think. The fact that they can just release a game for free? And chances are will be better than most of the games that came out in the past few months?
I don't get Valve.
But I don't have too.
GIMMIE MAH GAME!
The thing is with Gabe Newall, he understands the relationship between game devs/publishers and the community a lot better than most other comapanies. Valve is a huge corporation, but obviously it would be nothing without the fans. Not just the people who buy the game, but also the people who put their own time into improving it for everyone, creating mods, and even creating new games out of the construction tools. Valve recognises this and makes an effort to help out these people. Not only that, but they understand that, because their company relies so heavily on these people, it's only so fair that they give a little back in return, so they can release little indie titles like this for free, and offer tons of discounts on their other games, and all such as that.
Obviously this is a quality that isn't prevalent throughout the whole industry. Can you imagine Activision releasing something as potentially profitable as this out of the generosity of their
cold, dead hearts? Not when Kotick is at the head, at any rate. I mean, they're the biggest of the big in the industry. If
anyone can afford to release a small indie title like this for free, it's them. But to them, fans are just numbers, and when you multiply those numbers by a lump payment/monthly subscription, you get lots of profit.
Anyways, OT: Sure, it's free, but is it really worth all the effort of waiting for my PC to start up, opening Steam, finding the Alien Swarm page, and pushing the purchase for USZERO$, downloading it and then getting into the game just to play it?
...HELL YES!!
