Like what? There's only one main difference between 16 and 18 and that involves high school graduation, and that gap could be easily closed if American education waste so much time. (No really, I don't remember the difference between 2nd and 3rd grade or 4th and 5th. They might as well condense each pair into a year.)

I'll never understand why most states will trust a 16-year-old on the road behind the wheel of two tons of speeding metal but not trust him or her with the decision to fornicate or vote.

Well I don't think most 16 year olds can really be trusted behind the wheel of two tons of speeding metal, and they can fornicate with each other all they want. Leaving the age of consent at 18 gives parents (and the state) some ability to go after those old skeeves who would fuck their children.

Besides, what makes 16 any less arbitrary than 18? Why not 15? Or 14? Puberty hits early these days.
