I've been replaying Final Fantasy 7 Remake to prime myself for Rebirth, and I'm about 19 hours in (I'm just after the "plate" section), but I'm having a harder and harder time feeling engaged by the combat. I finished this game once when it came out walking away from it quite negatively, mostly due to the stupid meta-ghosts, but overall the game's story, characters, and scenery are very charming and adventurous. But the combat is really getting to me now. I never liked how annoying and cumbersome the materia system is, but the actual combat is feeling like such a drag to me now. It's not active enough to satisfy as a reflex based mechanic, and it's not strategic enough to satisfy as a turn-based mechanic. It limply floats in the middle. It also doesn't help that the combat pretty much stays exactly the same from the first chapter onward; hold square to auto-attack till you can pull of an ability or spell. The only character who has slightly more going on with their fighting mechanics is Tifa, but even then it still leaves you wanting.
I really hope Rebirth adds some... well, anything.
