What 'Class' Do You Naturally Tend To Play In Games?

Fantasy: Dual wielding rogue female who's cocky, or rogues in general.
Shooters: Shotgun flanker.
TF2: Demoman KA-BEEEWMMM!

The rogue is a odd thing because for the longest time I'd always insist on a strong two handed sword user to smash enemies. Now I just like hopping about cutting something down or appearing behind and stabbing the crap out of their back. Weird switch for sure.

I tend to prefer being a mage and throw fireballs at people.
Or if I can, summon an army of minions to take care of undesirables for me.

Generally I go for tanky warrior-type classes when it comes to games, especially in a first playthrough. In pretty much everything I've played with class options I go for that - Morrowind, Oblivion, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Skyrim, Mass Effect - doesn't matter, I always start off with a warrior. Lately though I've been going back through those games and trying out more stealthy, rogue-type playthroughs, which I'm finding very enjoyable.

Pet/Minion Classes whenever available and not nerfed into the ground. Which means pretty rarely, because most games don't include them, and when they do the pet aspect is almost always under-whelming and treated like an optional gimick where the meat of the class lies elsewhere.

Usually speedy, DPS types. Something I go for in pretty much all games. RPGs, shooters, fighting games..just my natural playstyle, I guess.

In RPGs I tend to play something between a rogue and a fighter.

In MMOs I tend to play one of the more versatile classes, preferably one that can heal, tank, and dps, so if I get bored with one role I switch over.

In shooters, I tend to play either run and gun or marksman.

In games that allow it, I tend to play stealth a lot.

I prefer summoners, engineers and healers.

It's just appealing to me to have an army at my beck and call, the ability to deploy turrets and gadgets or just assisting my team mates in a co-op game.

I don't like being shoehorned into a singular role however. Which is why I never could get into (Or get good at) Team Fortress 2. If I can make a hybrid build that allows me the ability to perform adequately in combat as well, that's the kind of class I'll play.

I always go the simplest, most basic class available. Fighter, warrior, champion, whatever you want to call it. You can never know how sneaky classes or magic classes play out; sometimes great, most of the time its a complex nightmare of buffs, curses, cool-downs and casting times. And that just grates on my nerves. It makes the game feel Dial-up Internet where I have to wait 60sec for anything to work.

Also in games like Skyrim, Wasteland, Fallout - always go ballistic, and assault weapons. I tried a energy weapon specialist in Fallout 3 once. It was terrible. Didn't see my first laser pistol until about level 10. And I have completely maybe 12 quests, because I kept having to bail out on them because I ran out of ammo because of my crap accuracy with basic guns.
Skyrim - axes and swords. Its hard, but not impossible, to fuck up hitting things with axes. But its all too easily to mess up magic.

Weird. That's probably the one thing that puts me off in games - minions. I hate minions.

Time was that my preferred class was the DPS warrior type.
Mainly because I figured it was the most "basic" class and it was a good way to get into a game while learning the mechanics as I go along.

The problem is that it's usually too slow for my style. cleaving through enemies while swinging around a giant 2 handed battle axe is as much fun as ever but it's just a tad too slow paced for me.

These days I usually go for the Rogue.
Poisons, stuns, bleed effects and a pair of nice stabby daggers does me just fine.

I typically play a nimble/quick/fast character class. Finesse build on Kingdoms of Amalur, Rogue on World of Warcraft, Rogue on Everquest, Assassin esque build on Elder Scrolls IV and V, Dex build on Dark Souls, Demon Hunter on Diablo, and stuff like that.

Hmmm. This is a fun thread. Lotsa similarish responses too.

For me?

MMO = Tanks or DPS. Classes that can do both, like WoW's Paladins/Druids/Death Knights are perfect for me.

I love having a set role to adhere to and perform it to the best of my ability in a team setting, be it through topping meters or holding down adds/getting smacked in the face by some big burly multi-faced orc with an obvious case of lockjaw and tentacle-teeth.

Healing just isn't something I care for. I've tried it and can't really perform too well...something about watching bars and not making them go down as fast as possible just doesn't sit right with me.

RPGs in General = Not big on Sword/Board in single player stuff. Too much of a damage fall off. I do prefer more hybridization though...so...I suppose I favor defensive minded Rogues (Swashbuckler/Duelist archetype) or Paladins/Druids, due to their ability to handle most situations.

If I'm RPing, then it's likely to be a Paladin of some sort... I'm a bit of an Ivory Chevalier in games.

MOBA = Tanky DPS like Shyvana or Riven. Love getting into the thick of things and surviving.

Looking back, I've noticed it changes along with how I view myself in reality. So over the course of about 10 years it went pure mage -> pure stealth -> mage/stealth hybrid. I'll spare you the underlying life story.

That's just for the cases where player class is a fairly fluid thing though, a la skyrim. If it's a more rigid affair, like WoW, I'm currently attracted to anything that is hybrid, exotic, rare (in MMO's), skill-based, highly mobile, DPS heavy, involves dual wielding, involves guns, ... The list goes on for quite a while, but the general idea is this: the less it looks and plays like a traditional warrior the better. Which is odd because I know all too well how fun it can be to just wade into things with a giant sword, but I guess you can't argue tastes. Not even your own.

The most enjoyable pre-made class I've ever played was my guild wars 2 elementalist and for non pre-made my mage gunner fran in final fantasy XII. Honorable mention goes to my pistols only sniper in XCOM - enemy unknown. There may have been no sane reason to do it, but I'll be damned if he didn't look cool doing it!

In FPS though, it's hard to say. In TF2 for example I bounce between pretty much anything except engineer and medic because I find them very boring. And if available my first choice will always be scout, soldier, sniper or spy. So I guess the theme here is mobility and/or stealth?

In solo RPGs (video games) I usually try a build I like to call the "mage-tank": heavy armour and damage spells are first priority, melee and healing are next, everything else gets forgotten.

In tabletop RPGs, I don't really have a preference. Usually I play whatever I was most excited about brewing before/during the game.

(Captcha is "upvote this", not really...I don't even.)

In RPG's I tend to play as heavy-ish warrior (preferably with mace and shield), but most of the time it comes to being able to achieve my goal via peaceful methods. If (for some reason) a game will allow persuation only for rogues, then I will play rogue.

In MOBA's I like to play as all roles, but not all characters.

Aggressive glass cannons of various types tend to be my preferred classes. In fighting games, my favourite characters tend to be rushdown and zoning characters. My favourite character of all time to play as is the Continuum Shift Extend incarnation of Lambda-11, on account of her being an aggressive projectile-rushdown character. Likewise, I like to play as hard-hitting, speedy, evasive characters in action RPGs and hack-and-slash games. Battlemages are also good.

The one exception to this is that I play as Soldier in TF2, and even then, it's not much of one. Despite having the second-highest HP and the second-lowest running speed, I play really aggressively, frequently sacrificing a lot of my health for rocket jumping. Rockets give the Soldier amazing power and mobility, and he can do pretty much anything.

I can't stand playing tank, assassin or healer-type classes. They're way too passive, and I tend to feel as though playing as these classes overcomplicates things when you can simply overwhelm the enemies. I prefer these classes in games where the player takes a more passive role, such as in a turn-based RPG or strategy game (Fire Emblem comes to mind, wherein tanks that can also solo half the maps are my favourite), but to play as them is just kinda... boring. A lot of sitting on my ass, waiting to draw aggro/assassinate targets/heal teammates. That's no fun. I honestly don't understand the appeal in playing as a tank, in particular.

I don't really play MMOs, but in single-player 3rd person fantasy RPGs I gravitate to the DPS/melee/roguey type character, although I like playing tanks too.

I'm absolute crap at playing mages. I just want to wade in there and smack the crap out of the enemy, not hang out in the back and avoid getting hit.

Oddly enough though I love being a sniper in FPSs, especially in modern day shooter. I will also frequently run up and basically shoot people in the face, but I love the satisfaction of hitting my target and no one seeing me. I also sneak around a lot more - at least until I'm spotted then it's run up at shoot people in the face time again.

Depends on how well the "classes" are done. I tend to go for magic users, but if the game has a well done berserker (Borderlands 2, Bioshock 2), I go for that. I also like the more odd classes that don't quite fit a stereotypical role.

Except in multiplayer games, where I tend to go for helper type classes. Healers, buffers, etc.

Mine also depends on multiplayer of not. I don't do MMOs so I can't really speak for those.

- When I'm solo-ing, I'm most likely playing a rogue/ranger/assassin/etc; I like not being seen, looting everything possible, and possibly getting something to fight for me if it's an option. I like bows and duel-wielding and light armour makes my character look more sexay.

- When I'm doing multiplayer it also kind of depends on who I'm playing with though I tend to go aggro and tank it up (particularly Borderlands)
