It's an awful term, I wholeheartedly agree.
Sport implies physical activity... the term just isn't meant to be releated to video games beyond simulation.
But video game tournaments are growing in popularity, and there is a fair amount of money behind the bigger ones. Maybe some day they will be big enough to get broadcasted on live television?
It should not be named e-sports though, in fact I wouldn't even think it needs a general term. There isn't a term for competetive board game play is there?
