People like you are the reason Chaotic was largely axed from 4th ed. Chaotic is not I do whatever I want, it is opposing institutional authority at all times, even when I otherwise agree with the authority. You're just neutral.

People like you are why the whole alignment system should be axed. You've just stuck your subjective, and rather narrow, interpretation in there and called it objective. By this logic, any lawful character would uphold institutional authority even if they disagreed with it.

No. All lawful means at its core, is that the character follows some sort of stricture, order, or pattern. An authority is just one possibility. you don't have to follow all of them. Think monks.

Your version of lawful is entirely meaningless, since almost any manner of conduct can be codified into a pattern, even if that pattern is only visible in the abstract. Furthermore, it is in almost complete departure from the use of alignment in the game. Alignment's initial implementation was as a balance feature for certain classes (i.e. act evil lose powers), in that regard it is supposed to be narrow and constricting. The textbook challenge for paladins was to send them to lawful evil kingdoms, and let their concern for others and their respect for authority duke it out. While this sort of behavior can hinder some kinds of role-playing, I'm not particularly sad to see alignment systems go, but playing the moral relativity card to reduce all alignments to samey ambitiousness is not the way to go.

While I would cheerfully dispute everything you've just said, I'm not going to. The mere fact that we disagree on this is the problem I have with the system. You can say all that, but if I'm the GM, guess what? You're wrong, and in terms of the gameworld, objectively wrong.

I once asked a couple of fellow Shadowrun players what they thought the 9-point alignments of our Shadowrun characters were. We all agreed on my character's alignment, but then we all gave a different alignment for the other two characters. In particular, one character drew LG, CG, and LE. That's a diametric opposite there. Same actions observed, totally different interpretation. Now put one of us in charge, and therefore defining morals for the whole world, and let the other start acting in that world. Problems arise. Doesn't matter who's right. Unless you have the ghost of Gary sitting at your gaming table making judgement calls, you can't call it objective. (And even then..)

On paper, maybe... but I've always seen myself as chaotically good. I help others, even ay my own expence, but in most cases, I'll only do something if it benefits myself in some way.
