When you get shot once and die. There was a game like that I think... What was it called...?
Contra games were like that, then again in those games you could have 3-33 lives...0o

I guess the game was based off Buddhist beliefs...XP

Realism is not that good because we play video games to ESCAPE real life. We take up new mantles and such playing video games, the only thing that should realistic should be graphics

Which is why when I make my game Discharged for the Revostation 920.7, guns will bring people to life and the lack of bullets will cause death.

Some of the best video games out there have things in them that are literal mindfucks, and that's what makes them so awesome, the fact that anything can happen.

Wacky, unrealistic fun is a lot better than gritty, realistic stuff...
You can escape into a world that is not your own and still have that world be realistic. Your dream of being a soldier might make you into the nigh-unkillable, never-need-to-reload, gunning down droves of baddies Die Hard. Someone else's might place them in the heat of battle in Black Hawk Down, with their life hanging on a razors edge, their teammates relying on them to perform to the best of their abilities with tension so thick, explosions so visceral, and consequences so real that the resulting tension could be cut with a knife.

So please, don't assume everyone thinks like you do. Sorry to pick on you in particular, but you're the first person I noticed voicing their opinion without the obligatory, "I think."

That's the problem with this thread. It's like asking "How realistic should art be?"- a totally pointless endeavour because it's a completely subjective matter, and, more importantly, it isn't important.

It's not important because there will always be games catering to as many levels of want and need as possible. Trying to ask a question such as this about the nature of all games is stupid and is never going to get an objective answer, let alone an answer that can actually change anything and impose itself upon an entire industry.

Bleh, I say! Bleh!

When an asshole with a chaingun and enough patience to start spamming ammo across the map (not that that takes much patience OR intelligence) and the first 50 cal round blows your head off and the guy's behind you. When people start shooting bullets straight up and 2 minutes later pwning people who just happened to stand where they did previously.

when the gameplay sucks, because of it
QFT - When the developer forgets that a game is exactly that, a game. A game should be at least somewhat fun. I found ArmA and it's sequel both tried to make it very real (and from what I've heard, is correct) but some stuff really needs to get throttled back for better gameplay. I tried both ArmA and ArmA II and didn't like either one. The only parts I really enjoyed was running around in a tank or helicopter while all kinds of hell was breaking loose.

Chances are, games aren't realistic enough yet, because there are still tons of people that enjoy simulators such as ArmA II.

I can't think of any aspect because we even have sex games out there so I don't think there is any aspect of life that has not been covered.

perfect example of too much realism: GTA 4. mechanics were clunky, controls sucked, driving was a nightmare, and annoying friends who want to hang out and pull you away from precious gameplay.

incontrast to saints row 2 where its got some realism but it has enough game elements to to be enjoyable.

When you kill someone or get killed, the character screams inhumanly and you get a close of of his top-end graphically-rendered face.

Also, when shot, losing the function of that limb. E.g, if you get shot in the leg, you limp/crawl, depending on bullet damage, get shot in the arm and your aim screws up, and if you get shot in the chest, you basically have 30 seconds before you die from bloodloss and shock.

A good example for something that's almost too real is GTA San Andreas and GTA4

You had to feed your character, go on dates, take your fat cousin around or he'd get all pissy and the vehicles drive like dick.
I seriously couldn't agree more. It's like Rockstar games ran out of ideas for both fun and colour. When I got GTA San Andreas I couldn't put it down because of the huge amount of options to dick around and I didn't get completelty bored of it until about Saints Row came out which showed how much GTAIV was missing. When I picked that up after about half an hour of boring missions and testing out your characters mortality with oncomming cars I just had to put it down.

Great graphics and extreme realism will always be inferior to kick ass features and awesome gameplay.

So long as the realism doesn't get in the way of the fun than I couldn't care less.

I'm gonna assume it's been said, but it is worth repeating: Getting cancer and having to arrange your will. That would really be a bit too much realism. Or it would be great fun, who knows?

You played Operation Flashpint: Dragon Rising didn't you?

That game was just too realistic for me. I found it a frustrating drag.

I thought I was hardcore until I played that game.

Though I did just finish ME2 on Insanity. Woop!
Actually, compared to ArmA II, Operation Flashpoint is practically Pac-Man in terms of realism.

ArmA II is probably the closest you'll get to actual combat without being there.
You took the words right out of my mouth. I am on my second play-through (on Expert of course), and I am on 'Manhattan.' Yeah... It's pretty damn realistic.

Although I have to admit... It's a TON of fun, so I wouldn't call it too realistic.

I wouldn't even compare Dragon Rising to Pac-Man, that would be doing it too much justice. I would say Pong if nothing else.
