Now, why would you add to that by telling us the backstory of an inconsequential character like Momo?
Because it fills up whole episodes without technically being a "filler". I think I could, between Bleach and Naruto (the animes) fill up 24 hours of useless backstory of useless characters.

I know what you mean. I used to watch Naruto and read the manga, and I was pissed off during the scene where Kakashi tried to use the Chidori (technique that basically turns his arm into a sword) on Zabuza. In both versions, Haku jumped in front and died. In the anime, it just looks like Kakashi is scratching Haku. In the manga, his arm went clear through him.
This is why I usually prefer manga to anime. Ugh.
Question, though, to test a theory: Was that episode in Japanese and subbed, or in the English version?
You like manga more than anime to? Wow, finally, never seen someone else who thinks that... what?

*holds up flame shield* English.

Flame shield? I don't care, do whichever you want.

My theory is, if you watch the Japanese Version, it will be bloodier, because (I think) the English version is done by 4Kids? Not sure. Tell me the episode number, and I'll check.

Well, I usually like manga more, or a subbed anime, because the English voice acting usually is..sub-par, to say the least. I don't know...manga has no filler, but anime is, well, animated.

And I said usually. There are exceptions. Some. But I think I never actually like one over the other too much.

A lot of people are hostile to those who watch the english version. I don't even watch any anime anymore though.

As for the episode number, I know it was in the first major arc (the Land of Waves arc), so it can't be much higher than 30, 40 on the outside. I'll take a look.

Sometimes it's the opposite... I don't know if you are femiliar with "The covering mist", but it seem to apear less often in the english versions... on the other hand, those animes never get aired outside japan.

Well, I never watch dubs, because, you download you're anime right? Nowadays, it's usually Dual-audio tracks, so you get both the English and the Japanese voices, the miracles of matroska (mkv) files.

Sometimes, when a new manga series get popular, and they make an anime out of it while it's still running, and they then have to finish it, it's completely different *cough* Negima *cought* and the manga continues on.

I'm a level 80 lurker with the "find anime" skill maxed out, who coulda guessed?

Nah, I never download. I stream. And for the ones I actually buy...

Okay, so I've bought one. Fullmetal Alchemist, complete box set, in Japanese and English. And the movie.

Any media suffers from sturgeon's revelation. "90% of anything is garbage."

90% of TV shows, Anime, Music, Movies, Books, People, ETC.

I enjoy watching anime, but I know that 99% of anime is absolute shit.

Also for those of you who don't watch anime in Japanese: 4Kids absolutely ruins any anime they've touched. They are NOTHING like the original if done by this company. So please hold(or better yet, ignore) your opinoun on whatever the anime is until you've seen the original Japanese version or say "I've only seen the English version" before stating an opinoun on it.

Think of 4Kids dubbing like this. Try making the Watchmen comic for the TVY7 audience. (7 years and up) without any excesive violence or people dying. Yea, they are that bad.

Tales of Earthsea???? I HATE you!!! I soooo want to see that! I forgot Grave was Gibli.
We have that too.

Totoro is wonderful. A lighter version of Spirited Away
I just watched Grave of the Fireflies the other day. The last few minutes are very heart-wrenching indeed. That's the first time a form of media has made me cry.

The only anime that genuinely held my interest past the 50th episode is Hajime no Ippo. Good thing they stuck with the manga and didn't provide filler (like what happened to GTO, very unfortunate).

Just like any other medium, sometimes you need to dig through heaps of crap to find some good stuff, the true gems.

I like Bleach though, with the exception of the filler. FILLER BAD!!!

Anime is also shitty when everyone in it looks like they're 5-15 years old. I like my characters looking like they're not in high school, thanks. OH, and the lack of body hair.

NOW anime's bad? NOW? One of my friends from China had some Anime about ten or eleven years old, and from where I was standing (admittedly on the other sde of the room) it looked truly terrible. It's a big cultural gap, I guess.

EDIT Actually, some people might have a point. It could have just been terrible anime I s'pose.

Sorry, I do find this all very amusing.

In the '70s and '80s, when I grew up, the animes were not that good visually (Gatchaman aka Battle of the Planets, Star Blazers and Speed Racer) but it was far FAR better than the crap on American TV. I mean, I remember crying to my Mom that the Captian of the Argo was dead! I had watched him for so long and i hoped he would have made it. Nope he died. Then turnit over to G.I. Joe (which I liked, military brat I was) and the enemies were parachuting out when they were destroyed. I mean, it was for nothing. No emotional loss. No emotional attachment.

So, I fell in love with anime. I didn't even know the word yet, but I liked it. I didn't even know WHY I liked it. Later on I was introduced to Akira and Robotech and Totoro, which was the same thing all over again. THen came Ranma 1/2 which taught me that humour was good too. I haven't looked back since.

I see Pokemon and Naruto and I laugh. Today's Americans cannot see the real show. Neither of them I liked in any form anyways. I am always pleasently surprised when I see an anime that the show was, in fact, based on a book. Studio Gilbi became a representive for the best of anime, and was producing movies far better than Disney was in the late '90s and '00s. I was Overjoyed when Spirited Away won an Oscar.

But I digress.

Is all anime bad? No. Please remember there alot out there and there is many different tastes in all of us. We all don't watch "American Idol," nor do all of us like it. But people do, so there is an audience for it. Granted, there is some anime that is just plain bad. Not for it's animation or it's storyline but for both.

Is dubbed Anime bad? No. There is some really good dubs out there. Chris Patton is one of my favourite voice over actors, and so is Vic Mignogna. SOme are written horribly in the past. But for the most part today's dubs are excellent and come very close to the Japanese original.

[Saying this, reading something on a TV screen gives me a headache, so I much prefer the dubbed version. I have alot a problem going to see forgeign films because of this, the last one I raced out of the theater throwing up. And I only made it through "The Seven Samurai" Which was dissapointing, because it was so good.]

Is anime naughty? NO! Please realise in Japan, they have a very differnent morals than the Puritanical America and Heavily RElegious Europe and Middle East. Am I saying that you are religious? No. but the way we are raised and the ethics and morals we are taught are based upon religon. THere are exceptions of course, but I can safely say most of us have some kind of religous background. Now Japanese do not believe the way we believe. So how they raise their kids and whatthey exposed them to at what age is far different than us. So seeing Kaname in the opening credits to FMP! is perfectly acceptable for a anime aimed for the Japanese early and mid teens. In America, if an American cartoon did that, they would be sued, even though there was no lewd actions within the sequence (or in the series much the dismay of many fans)

So, Anime is kids stuff? Not all. THe infamous Sailor Moon cuttings in order to be shown in America during the day for the pre-teen set is ample proof of that. For awhile in America anime = Saturday morning catoons. Many stations did not even look at it, thank god for me! Now that has changed, thanks to Adult Swim and MTV's Liquid Televison. But the public consenus is still that anime is still for kids. As a result, many people feel that watching anime means they would not be concidered "Grown up" by their peers. Or could not makethe jump from Pokemon they watched as a child to Cowboy Bebop and regard it as the same thing. Also, because of our Puritianal Culture in America (I will not speak for anywhere else), heavily cut anime invades our tv in aform that is deemed "fit" for our children.

Time will change all of this, as it has already.

Regardless, whether or not you agree with me is up to you. But anime is HERE, in the English speaking countries. It is not a fad, for it existed here before I was born. Look at my profile to see my age and my gender. I will be here tomorrow, too. It has shaped us, especially us in the gaming community, and we will shape the world. It is an influence, both good and bad, in the minds of all of us.

And, I for one, are not going to give up on watching it.
