Seriously, I clicked over and caught an episode of bleach and felt like blowing my brains all over my fucking wall, my.. my beautiful wall. I remember when I would stay up all night to catch an episode of Cowboy Bebop or FLCL but now, like the music business Anime's been filled with mindless shit.

Why do things like this have to happen?
And what Anime cliche drives you up the wall to the point of blowing YOUR brains out, all over your beautiful walls.
you have to be picky about your Anime these days. Like the gaming industry. Crap has flooded the media. but a lot of the stuff you dislike has been in Japan for years. they just decided to bring it over here. Mind you the japanese are kinda wacky people (in a good way) to start with. so some of their shows just don't appeal to most Americans.
I would suggest catch Death Note, Samurai Champloo is really good. Trinity Blood was good as was Blood+. I must warn you though Death Note goes a little long. i think it went 36 episodes rather then the normal 24 of most Anime episodics

I generally used to like anime until I started noticing the repetitiveness of it all. I've concluded that every anime as 3 characters:

1) The kid with hidden ultimate power. Usually the kid has no idea he has such power and never has control of it. Sometimes it's "evil" power. Usually acts pretty wacky when not in combat for comic relief.

2) The serious, "deep" kid. Is seen brooding on a regular basis. Opens up to no one and treats everyone like crap, but everyone usually thinks he's awesome through some far-fetched reason.

3) The chick. Always hot, cries often. Her job is to chastise kid #1 and fall in love with kid #2 for no real reason. Her lines usually consist of variations of "Damnit [kid #1]!" and "No [kid #2], it's too dangerous! You'll be killed!"

And some animes combine kid #1 and kid #2.

Examples: In Naruto, Naruto is kid 1, Sasuke is kid 2, and Sakura is kid 3. In Bleach, Ichigo is a mix of kids 1 and 2 with emphasis on kid 1, and Rukia is kid 3. In Inuyasha, Inuyasha is kids 1 and 2 with emphasis on kid 2, and Kagome is kid 3.

It's not accurate every time, but it's enough for me to get sick of alot of anime's pretty quick.

I should note that I'm not a blind hater of anime and I actually LIKED some of these animes. I saw plenty of episodes of Inuyasha and Bleach (especially Inuyasha), I'm just not a fan anymore.

EDIT: In Trigun, Vash is kid 1 and 2 with emphasis on kid 1 early in the series and gradually more emphasis on kid 2 as the series continued, and Meryl is kid 3. Milly is just there for comic relief. And I LOVED Trigun.

I don't like most anime for the same reason I don't care for comics.

It just takes way too long to get any real gratification from it.

If you follow a comic, you can wait weeks between issues, and issues are about 30 pages long, and mostly full of filler.. it ends on a cliffhanger to make sure you pick up the next issue.. Nothing happens for so long, that I personally lose interest..

Anime.. I'll cite DBZ, but many Anime do the same thing.. The last 8 episodes of the Frieza Saga take place in the last 10 minutes it takes for Namek to explode.

8 episodes.. about 160 minutes.. almost 3 hours.. originally aired over 8 weeks... 2 months... to cover 10 minutes of fighting and dialogue... Nothing happens..

Sir, I believe you may have come upon a breakthrough.

Personally, I despise the terrible dubbing the most. I rarely watch anime anymore, but I recently saw a few episodes of Gundam Wing. I can honestly say there are several phrases that get used dozens of times in each episode, while many synonyms are available.

good anime :code geass-death note-Zegapain
bad anime : "beat to deat angel" (WTF?!?!)
That.

There is one thing that really drives me up a wall with so many anime these days: training arcs, usually in fighting/adventure anime.

The main character will find that he/she (usually it's a he) is somehow insufficient, and will train to increase his/her power. During this training, he/she will inevitably be trained by a person/people who is/are in some way connected to the main character's past (i.e. The trainer will be the rival/friend/old enemy of the trainee's parent, or the trainer will be directly related to the trainee.)

This ticks me off because it places so much emphasis on power, and the training usually takes place with an absurdly short time frame. And it happens SO FUCKIN' MUCH! Why does the main character have to match power for power? Why can't the protagonist use his/her head and instead find a way to outsmart his/her opponent?

What's wrong with bleach?
There are some crappy episodes (like the entire Bounto arc) but it's still good.
Well the animation/art style is pretty awful in my opinion. Aside from that however, bleach is just another mindless shonen, with no real plot, formulaic story arcs, and no end in sight. It's the dragon ball z of this generation.

Bleach in a nutshell

Something unexpected happens.
Ichigo finds he's too weak to do anything about it.
Ichigo gets stronger.
Ichigo wins.
Something unexpected happens.
Ichigo gets stronger... until the end of time.

You get my point, good anime's generally have a plot... and a point. Once they deviate from the plot in order to extend its life in the spotlight(filler) it becomes trash. Hell, Naruto was good for the first 50 episodes, and then they put in 180 episodes of filler and killed it.
I can agree with *some* of that. For 1: DBZ was awesome (save DBGT which was crap).
For 2: Bleach *could* be So Much More -if- they did one thing that would be genius: Kill Off Boring Characters like most Reapers, The Quincy and Inoue... Then we'd have a motivated Ichigo, a smaller (and less annoying) cast of characters and maybe we could bring back some quality to the plot.

But I do agree with your Hate for fillers, the predictable nature of quite a few anime (ie get stronger kick ass, was rince, repeat).

So you've watched 4 anime series? Oh, and you've come up with a broad generalization based on your limited experience. How delightful.

Please apply your analysis to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Or Full Metal Alchemist. Or Neon Genesis Evangelion. Or Le Chevalier D'Eon. Or Paprika. Or Kite. Or Serial Experiments: Lain. Or Five Centimeters Per Second. Or *ANY* comedy anime.

That's an Irish band. THe SIster and uncles of Enya.
It's also an anime series based off of a visual novel of the same name. Very heavily focused on the theme of family. It is very very sad in places.

Edit: And it's relevant since it just finished up about a week ago. (Not counting the wrap up episode)

Also, don't forget animes like Monster or Planetes. That's only 2 more, but most of my favourite animes have just been flagged up in the above quote. That, and it's late...:p

Damn right.

If they really wanted to connect to American audiences, they'd make it a Catholic priest. :)

How about Tenchi? It was technically a harem, but it was so epic.
Master Roshi from DBZ and DB was their way of adopting a common icon of anime.

I do enjoy mindless stupidity from time to time.
That is the good life, my friend.

Personally, I am an oldie fan. I grew up on DBZ, Yu-Yu and Toonami. When I moved back to America from China (spent 5 and a half years there, from age 2 to 8) I quickly discovered Toonami. My first impression of Sailor Moon was "Why the heck are there so many scantily clad lesbians trying to save the world with love and peace?"
When Toonami had it's Month of Miyazaki, I practically fell in love with Princess Mononoke. Yu-Yu was awesome, and I love all forms of tournaments because of it. I am a loyal fan of DBZ, and have strong conflicting feelings about the LAM coming up.

There are some Anime that are awesome in of themselves. Examples would be Code Geass, Toradora and To Aru Majutsu No Index. I only recently started checking out some anime, mainly just watching episodes that I missed from Tenchi, DBZ and the first episodes of Sailor Moon, because I just needed to understand the background story behind all the lesbians.

Some anime make you think. I love psychological thrillers. The anime that I watched and loved due to its complexity, and downright similarity to the way I think, was Code Geass. I predicted every political, military move Lelouch made, and every fiasco that Lelouch underwent, and I noticed its extreme similarity to the DUNE series of books, of which I believe in, both as a social experiment resource, and political speculation source. The elimination of hate and war, through the self sacrifice of a single worldly despised and all powerful man, peace is achieved.

I cried at the end. I swear, I cried tears of both joy and sadness.

Which is why a good rule of thumb is, stop watching past episode 50. Any good, self respecting anime will have run its course by then. The only exception I'm willing to make to that rule is Kenshin. Though even kenshin got pretty lame after the Kyoto arc.
Rurouni Kenshin was Epicness reincarnate, but then it gave way to filler. I remember the first time it was put on Toonami, it was forced off the air due to too much violence. The second time it was put on, they finished the first story arc, and even got up into the second arc. Reminds me of how Samurai Jack was kept on the air, because they used oil and slime instead of blood for the fights. Way to fight the censors Jack.

I know many fanboys will get mad at me for this, but I hate Naruto. I will explain, it has all the icons of Anime, nude chicks, love triangles, perverted masters and action. However, I estimate that a good 25% or more is filler. During the first boss fight, with the Water Jutsu guy, I skipped watching Naruto for 5 episodes. When I tuned in again, I was seeing them in the same exact situation, giving long narrations, recapping EVERY SINGLE FRIGGIN EVENT that took place over the past episodes. The second reason I despise Naruto, is because of its fanbase. I can understand how it can compete with DBZ with its legacy, but the products they produce, and the fanatics they garter... I saw a commercial for a Jutsu battle game, where they had a 5 year old kid pressing buttons on a glove, cosplaying as a ninja. No. Just no. After Cartoon Network started filling Toonami with other crap shows, replacing the promising shows like IGPX, and then reducing Toonami to 2 hours. I stopped watching. Toonami was drifting away, as Cartoon Network replaced the fun daytime shows like Tom & Jerry (ITS A FRIGGIN CLASSIC) with the crap Chowder and filth Flapjack. I no longer watch TV, except for a few occasions, because Sci-Fi had eliminated Stargate, the Epicness of interstellar travel, that sparked the basis of my religious/psychological beliefs.

Basically, the New Anime creators are hoping to score big. The styles of Anime vary, from beautiful scope, imagination and graphics, to fanservice and simple Porn. I was not around for the days of Ranma or Speed Racer, but those were the founding anime, on which the pillar of Anime Entertainment stands.

Kudos to whoever read my response, and if you quote me, please only quote the segment you are commenting upon.

My #1 rule: "If you can skip 5 episodes and it still be in the same frickin place, same frickin time and same fricken event, drop it. Also, if you can miss 1 episode, and it practically has an entirely new plot, decide if you like it, or if it is geting too far out there.

My favorite Post-Toonami, Post-Code Geass, anime is the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai) series. Those episodes will make you think. Make you fear. Make you hope and dream. Then turn around and stab those dreams into a bloody pulp. It pulls of horror perfectly and then switches faces entirely in the second season. Amazing that a Murder Mystery Game became such an awesome horror.

I hope I am not breaking any rules with a post this long (I cant think of any I might be breaking), and once again, kudos to whoever read this entire post.

Just read the first few posts. Stop watching shonen and harem comedies and you'll be fine. watch stuff oriented at adults. you sound like all you've ever watched is what they up on toonami. I did not just see you try to compare cowboy bebop with bleach. If you must do something like that, use baccano or something that can actually be compared.
