Why are people making such a big deal of out of Quiet from MGS 5?

Its simple really if it offends you or bother you don't play it, if you still want to play without her in a bikini there is more than one mode already out that changes that.

But that not enough for some people they have to raise the pitchforks and an outrage mob to try to prevent everyone from seeing such an "obscene" material.

They ignore the fact that a lot of people don't share their neoprudish sex negative views and nobody has to. I stand for free expression.

In my opinion Quiet?s eye candy design is drawing a lot of deserved criticism. Metal Gear Solid is a high profile game. It?s something that people want to point to and say ?Look how far we have come!? That becomes a problem when such a gratuitously sexist outfit is present. I can?t show msg to a friend and say ?look how amazing this is! I want to share this with you?just ignore the cartoonishly fetishized lady hanging out in the helicopter??

I can?t ignore that. I can?t pretend she's presented in this way for any reason other then to draw attention to the game in an underhanded fashion.

You did choose to not kill Quiet and also to have her on your helicopter. To be honest, it's like playing FemShep, romancing a female character, and then being uncomfortable Mass Effect 3 has lesbianism in it.

You would have to be rather puritan to see it as obscene and honestly no one sees it that way. It's just bad character design and ya people will complain about any and every one of he game's faults including bad character design.

I remember a time when gaming actually accepted and sometimes praise sexuality in gaming I mean People referred to Lara Croft as the primere sex symbol in video games like how Elvis was to rock music.

What happened to all that?

...is anybody actually trying to prevent people from buying this game or is it just face-palms and laughing?

I think the straw-feminists in your head have gotten loose again.

No, guys. The costume came first, the reason second. This isn't a poor woman having her outfit dictated by her medical condition - this is a fictional creation formed in the mind of an unpredictable man with a vivid and creative imagination. One who had the image of her and her behaviour in his head before he thought, "she breathes through her skin."

Otherwise the alternate costumes would be equally revealing. Otherwise that elderly skin-breather wouldn't have gone into battle bedecked in shrubbery.
The key difference is that Quiet's lungs were destroyed by Ishmael. We don't really know at what point Kojima penned, "And then a mysterious man with a bandaged head who talks just like Snake sets the female assassin on fire before throwing more flammable liquid on her as she screams and throws herself out a convenient window."
Wait, she was set on fire to the point her lungs were destroyed and they have such advanced surgery techniques that 99% of her body[footnote]And yeah, you can see all of that[/footnote] has no visible burn scars?

How very convenient.

Generally, being see as a "sex symbol" instead of, say, a good character, is something not generally appreciated in the last ten years of video games.

Not that sex symbols have disappeared, oh my no. People just don't rave about them as much, what with all this free HD internet porn that's everywhere.

EDIT: It also helps that, in addition to being an object of teenaged lust, Elvis was also a very talented musician. It's not like he was a tone-deaf, oiled up slab of meat in a speedo gyrating around on stage not singing.

It's not because you're poking fun at the incorrect use. It's because you're using it as justification for why something's stupid and shouldn't be around when the universe she's in runs on bullshit and stupid tech to begin with.

Don't like it? Fine, I don't really care for her either. Think the justification's stupid? So do I, but I also think people that demanded an explanation in the first place don't know what they're talking about. Think the justification and lack of real world science means it shouldn't work that way? Get out of your rocker and look back through the series, parasites, skin breathing, nanomachines, internal telepathic walkie-talkies, psychics that get better the more exposed to war they are, perfect clones with accelerated aging, DNA sequencing and half the genes in the human body hidden from the public so that a rogue AI(essentially) can experiment without consequence? It's stupid, but so is nearly every piece of tech in the MGS universe. Because it runs on its own science that doesn't have to intersect with our own. Or it does work in our world, but we don't know it because the Patriots are still in control and it's simply an alternate universe where they aren't in the same level of control.
You're still taking this way too seriously, I never said she shouldn't be around, something being stupid doesn't mean I want to excise it from existence. I think the design is stupid and would have done it differently myself, but that's different than my complaints about the explanation for her powers being poorly thought out. And really, you seem to treat Kojima's writing like he's an idiot, you keep saying to turn our brains off, turn our brains off, and really that seems more insulting to Mr. Kojima's writing than all the people in this thread nitpicking the science.

No, not every piece of tech or science in MGS is stupid (and again with you calling Kojima's stuff stupid, why do I feel like I'm the one defending him here), a lot of it is merely far-fetched or supernatural, and Kojima has a penchant for trying to over-explain how it works, just because the science doesn't always match up doesn't mean that words that have meaning suddenly change. Maybe in MGS photosynthesis works differently than in our reality but to claim something like that and not explain it is bad writing because until told differently the viewer is going to assume that Photosynthesis means the same thing in MGS that it does here. It doesn't matter how many unexplained fantastic elements are there, the language being used is ours here in reality, and language in reality has meaning, hijacking that meaning for whatever you want to write doesn't work without justification, and explanation. If you attempt to explain something and fail, then it would have been better to not explain it at all, why he tried to explain it is irrelevant, whether it was his intention or the demands of fans.

I'm not going to stop having fun pointing it out just because you seem to take offense at anyone daring to look at the plot and not turning their brain off just because it has some fantastical elements in it.

Skull Face used the parasites he stole from Code Talker to replace her skin.

Worth noting lead developer Toby Gard quit Core in protest of how Eidos sexualised Lara in advertising and such. He didn't return to the series until Legend\Anniversary\Underworld.

So for those of you pulling out the sex-negative and/or puritan cards, I have a question.

Imagine if the game had Snake continuously masturbating throughout the game, just whipping it right on out and wanking himself raw every few minutes. During gameplay, during cutscenes, anywhere and everywhere. When queried, Kojima declares that this is how Snake cleanses his bloodstream of expired nanomachines.

I'm going to assume there would be some objections from the audience. Mostly along the lines of, "WTF, why is he doing that? This is stupid and makes no sense."

Would those people objecting be sex-negative puritans?
Sorry, I haven't played the game. I didn't know Quiet literally masturbated during gameplay. It would be fine if the game would've marketed that clearly and the game's rating matched the content. Seeing that they forgot to mention that, I can see where the objections are coming from.

We grew up and realized that the "progressive sexuality" was just a bunch of dudes creating personal fap material for a bunch of other dudes, while patting themselves on the back at how "progress" they were being without a clue in the world.
Right...and the new Lara, that you're supposed to want to "keep safe", while simultaneously supposedly an independent character that can take care of herself, is somehow better...boy, that progressive bunch sure evolved to such a great new form, still patting each other on their backs and talking about the downfall of sex symbols in games to replace them with dolls!

And I'm not calling it stupid solely because I think it's stupid. Kill la Kill is stupid, Gurren Lagaan is stupid, Fairy Tail is beyond stupid half the time, so much of Sekirei is stupid, but they're all incredibly enjoyable and I will never regret the time I spend(t) watching them. It's the same with MGS for me. The tech is stupid, the character designs silly, the lore amazing and full of so much bullshit, and the stories so over the top that I just love it to death. But it's still full of stupid and silly things. As you yourself said and as has become the rallying cry for anyone that wants to act like they know what they're talking about(this is not you I don't believe), it's fine to criticize something you like.

I'm not taking offense at it, and I apologize. But there's just so many people pointing at Quiet being an outlier in a series of sexy shots that it's making it hard for me to think they actually know what they're talking about with the series.

She's a stupid design, and there's a million different ways to do her if we take Kojima at his word(personally I still am just going to keep thinking of her as just another fourth wall break with how angry people have gotten over her), but the only difference between this and half the other characters in the series is that Kojima's subtlety meter finally broke after decades of under-use.

I don't think that line of thinking applies here. Call of Juarez the Cartel has been called out for having overtly racist missions. I won't buy the game, that won't change the fact that I feel angry about racist content in a game made a few years ago. Similarly choosing gameplay choices that omit sexist content doesn't mean they don't exist and reflect the whole of the game.

You may recall that that fellow's comments regarding Lara Croft didn't go down too well. He got thoroughly dogpiled. (Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the poor bugger received death threats.) I don't remember a single voice defending him. Not even the proto-gamergate crowd were on his side, let alone the "progressives".

Well lets do a comparison. Which one of these makes you feel funny?

I'm not exactly sure what point you are trying to make, but I think this picture complements the video well.

You may not remember it, but there were people defending him. Hell, after GamerGate happened, a thread here (possibly the first on the new Lara) was linked to me numerous times. It just wasn't the progressives making the thread.
