Why do you fear death?

Most people who fear death do so because they have unfinished business, or something they feel they need to live for, or possibly lack context on what lies ahead. Spiritual people not so much, though, so in my case its just another phase. I've got things to do now, but who's to say I can't get them done in the next life? So what if it's not done here? It's not like it'd matter after I was gone anyway.

Long story short, don't fear the Reaper. It comes regardless of your wishes.

"death is nothing to us, because when we are, death has not come, and when death has come, we are not"
~ Epicurus

I fear it when I think about it, even though I know I shouldn't.

I don't fear death. Death is just my existence dissipating away; I will not be able to formulate "fear" when I am dead. I fear pain.

I also fear that in the moment of death, I will wish I had lived differently.
Well I can already point out to you that even if you took over the world everything you would do would be insignificant in the grand scheme of things. So stop caring about its significance and just live life.

OT: Death is something I came to terms with at age 12. Dont fear it per sé, but i'd rather be alive then dead.

I don't fear it. If we fear the inevitable then we will be worrying all the time about something we can't stop.

There are only two reasons to really fear death as far as I'm concerned:

1) The fear that you may have left someone alone and in your death have actually hurt someone who is still living, not really much of a fear unless you have either someone who really loves you or children, etc.

2) The unknown, who knows what could be beyond death, the thought that it could be worse than your current life gives me the creeps, e.g. being an African child in poverty etc.

I personally only go with the first one, but I'm not afraid of death, I see it as an escape, an alternative to pain and suffering or actually working for a living, because once you're dead, there's (probably) no regret or misery that you died so, as the Aussies say, 'no worries'..
Off topic: my funeral song is so going to be 'Still Alive' by GLaDOS..

people fear death because no one knows what comes next. Also if you claim to "not fear death" you're full of it because I'm fairly sure everyone in the situation of a gun jammed into their mouth in malice would be feeling some fear.
Personally I fear death because at this point I feel unfulfilled. also being alive is fun so I make it work.

This.
I'm okay with death, but dying hurts. I'm okay with both has long has it's not painful.
Death would actually be quite exciting, to find out what -if anything- comes next.

This. :)

I'd be afraid of painful, slow death. I'd fear for my family and friends (not that I think I'm very important, they couldn't live without me. I don't want them to be sad).

And I'm afraid my funeral won't go the way I'd want it.

And this is how I'd want it (concept is still in works :)

I don't want to be buried in a cemetery. I want to be buried on a patch of land reserved for me and my family. When I'm buried, I want a tree to be planted on me (marijuana plant is also an option). So when time passes, the tree grows giving a "timelapse" of my death. So my tree would be the biggest, tallest. And my great great great children's trees would be small.
That, or launched into space.

Second, the funeral: dress code should be funky, funny, nude, serious... anything goes.

I don't want ANY religious speeches, I'd want everyone to say something. Don't care if it's someones philosophy on life, death, God, god, gods... as long as it's from the heart, HONEST ("He was funny, but could be the biggest asshole" - everyone laughs).

I want music! From teary eyed classical music, to funky 70s porn music.
I want it to be a party! Don't just bury me, and then leave me there while you go drinking your asses off. Pour a drink in my soil, throw a bud, tell jokes like I'm still there, for the last time. Make jokes at my expense. Laugh, cry, laugh at people crying for me, then cry for me so they laugh at you.

Also, make the same party annually.

Celebrate my life by celebrating my death. If all these happen, then I don't have any reason to fear death.
That sounds epic, can I come?

Because it's just....nothing. No more thoughts. No more existence. Just...nothing.

Yeah I'm not exactly religious, you may have guessed.

To be honest though my fear of death has greatly lessened in the last few years. I'm not really very scared of it anymore :S

Whatever happens, happens, I don't care, but I try to avoid it (as in not doing daredevil stuff) just for that extra 5 seconds that I can waste doing this kind of stuff.

I don't particularly fear the prospect of being dead. In fact, I'm kind of curious as to what, if anything, happens after I die.

That said, I do fear the process of dying. From what I hear, it tends to be painful. Besides, there must be some reason we have such a strong instinct for self-preservation. And I'm not one to second guess my own instincts.

I don't really fear death itself. I think it's kind of interesting to think about it, and if there's anything afterwards.
Oh course I don't want to die, but still; the subject of "death" is very curious.

I'm not really afraid of death. I don't even think about it. I know it will happen, that I don't know how, and I don't know what happens after that, if anything. But it's not a focus of mine. Rather than fear death, I live life.

Actually, have a friend that told me he gets depressed whenever he thinks about death. I told him not to do that, then. Sounds pretty easy to me. Lol

I fear the deaths of those close to me. I'm afraid of how I'm going to react when my closest friends die. How will I live without them?

I know I'm supposed to live on for them, for myself, and somehow find a way to forge ahead without them. But that terrifies me.

I'm a little worried about my own death. I have my will all set up and I've appointed an executor of my estate who I trust will look after the people most important to me. I know my insurance will cover half of my house so I don't have to worry about that debt.

As for myself, I hope to self-publish a book or two before I go, so I'll be further immortalised in this world, not just in the memories of those who remember and know me.
