Why don't you play games on PC?

i have actually bean leaning more and more into PC gaming than usual. my PS2 has a library of over 50 games. meanwhile i only have 6 or so PS3 or 360 games. during the PS2 era i would buy 1 maybe 2 pc games a year.

and quite honestly, depending on how the anti-used sales on the new consoles goes (and lets be honest, they will do it in a way to milk as much money out of the consumer as possible. the gaming industry doesnt know the meaning of "reasonable" anymore) i probably wont buy a new generation console. and no backwards compatibility....

that and PC gaming is super cheap compared to buying games on the console. i can get any AAA (other than CoD games which take forever to go on sale) for 10-15 bucks within 6 months of release on the PC. consoles? hahahaha...no. hell, there are a few games from the last generation (persona series, suikoden 5 to name a few) that ive always wanted to play but are going UP in price.

oh, JRPGs dying is another reason why ive been leaning away from consoles. was never into sport games or racing games, so i dont have those to tie me into consoles. RTS are still a pain on the console, and i prefer fps on pc.

my PS3 mostly gets used for netflix and bluerays, not gaming.

Well try and make that a little clearer next time.

I'll assume people are stating things as fact when they write it in such a way that it doesn't look like an opinion. Like you did.

Clearly you won't based on your posts.

Grey Day for Elcia said:
Elite in what regard? In not like JRPGs? That makes no sense. I don't think you understand how to use that word.
I don't think your elitist for not liking JRPGs. I think you're elitist for mocking them the way you did, to the point where you say they're not RPGs. So because you don't like them they don't count? That is why I think you're being elitist. Not to mention your opinions on consoles scream PC elitism

You go ahead and have this conversation with someone every time they say something along the lines of "X is better than Y," or "X is a bad Y." It's a forum. Opinions are discussed. It is impossible to state a fact when the subject is personal taste. Why you would assume someone would try is beyond my imagination.

Because they aren't. THAT is a fact. Your average J'RPG', ready?

Unlikely hero.

Evil organization.

Gather up group of stereotypes, including a love interest and a quiet outsider with a secret heart of gold.

Take a step. Cutscene.

Take a step. Battle.

Take a step. Cutscene.

Your interaction with the story: none.

Your interaction with the game: choose an attack.

Your interaction with the characters: none.

Your influence over the story or world: none.

If Final Fantasy is a roleplaying game, so is Gears of War.

Go ahead, brush it off and label me some pathetic quip. I couldn't care less. If anything, your failure to address a single point and to offer nothing but said quips reminds me how invalid your argument (or lack there of) is.

EDIT: Oh and add to the FF soup loads of brooding emo drama and inner torment the likes of which are most likely pulled directly from teen diaries.

See most people on this site don't this. They know the difference between opinion and fact so they'll say 'personally I...' or 'I prefer...' You on the other hand just go 'it's better. It's just better'. You don't back it up, you don't assert it's opinion. You just make a declaritive statement.

You: *sticks tongue out*

And we have a winner.

Even the post above you at least acknowledges the issues I raised, lol. You're too much.

You gonna keep repeating yourself or...? And BTW I don't personally like JRPGs but I at least recognise that they are RPGs. You're clearly playing a role and there is immersion. You progress, you get immersed in the story and the world and you interact with that world and with NPCs. Maybe some JRPGs are like what you say but they're not all like that.

It is not a fact that they're not RPGs, or even a widely accepted opinion. You're the first person I've heard who says they aren't RPGs. You've just drawn arbitrary line in the sand and gone 'they're not RPGs anymore because I say so'. It's like saying Tekken isn't a fighting game because it's not 2D. It doesn't make any sense.

Actually yes, you have to say something if you want to dismiss something as "stupid". To be precise, you have to say why it is stupid with some actual facts to back your statement up.
Ok then, I have. Read the post below the one you made.

if games like FF are not RPGs, then that means that RPGs as a genre did not exist until recently.

and considering that every gaming site has a topic labeled rpgs for decades....then apparently your defintion of a rpg is vastly different from what everyone else defines a rpg.

JRPGs are all about the story, and maybe some gameplay mechanics. but it also leads you by the nose. it is like a digital book or movie.

western RPGs are about immersing in a world with a weak and sometimes non-existent story that focuses rather on exploration and doing whatever the hell you want.

You play a role in every game ever made. You can be immersed in every game ever made. You progress in every game ever made. If you mean in 'levels,' then Modern Warfare is as much an RPG as Final Fantasy XIII. You interact with the world? No. You don't; you can't choose how to behave, you can't choose how to talk, you have no influence on how the story plays out, you have no input on your character's interactions with others, you have no player agency in the world except choosing at what speed to walk down the path and what attack to select in a battle-the list goes on. Final Fantasy is a story. A story that plays out without your help. All you, the player, do is click an attack every few minutes and read the dialog.

Any more fallacies?

You must be rather young. First of all, RPGs have existed since the first computer was built and functioned like digital versions of the pen and paper roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons. Secondly, "western RPGs are about immersing in a world with a weak and sometimes non-existent story"? Planescape: Torment is often referred to as the greatest story ever told in video games. It is an RPG. It was made a long time ago.

Do some research and then get back to me.

I don't mean progress as in 'win' I mean as in you get better. You increase skills and unlock new ones to help progress with the story and immerse you into the world more. That's multiplayer and it's just unlocking guns to get a bigger killstreak. It's not the same.

How is talking to NPCs to gather info and clues to help you progress not interacting with the world? You're really oversimplifying what you actually do in a JRPG.

Yes, because all JRPGs are Final Fantasy aren't they? Just like all shooters are COD and all fighting games are Street Fighter.

never played planescape torment

im not young, ive played games for over 2 decades. in fact there is a good chance im older than you.

there were a few "d&d" games like neverwinter nights, which goes firmly into the FF definition.

but sure, keep on trolling just because your definition of rpg is different from the VAST MAJORITY INCLUDING THE GAME INDUSTRY ITSELF.

if that is what you believe a rpg is, thats fine. but stop being a jerk because other people do not believe that is what a rpg is and instead believe in the mainstream definition.

Your entire argument boils down to: but it IS a RPG because... it's kind of like an RPG.

JRPGs are books, they are movies, they are stories. You, the player, do nothing in them but click on a skill. Clicking on an NPC and it spewing dialog at you is NOT interacting with the world. That's a dialog box popping up.

Again:

You cannot choose how to behave.

You cannot choose how to talk.

You cannot affect the world.

You cannot affect the story.

You cannot alter the events in any way.

You cannot choose how to progress through the story.

You cannot interact with characters beyond clicking on them and reading what they say.

You cannot do anything in combat besides choosing an ability.

Etc., etc., etc...

If that list doesn't prevent a game from being an RPG, any fucking game is an RPG.

Hazy992 said:

Yeah, totally different. In one you unlock the ability to use new weapons and attacks. In the other you unlock the ability to use new weapons and attacks. "Oh, oh, but, but, this one is magic and it's a spell." Colour it any way you like, make any excuse you care to, it won't change the fact that unlocking the access to an ability in a J'RPG' is the exact same system as that found in leveling up in Modern Warfare; get new spells, get new guns, get new abilities, get new killstreak abilities.

Goodnight, lol.

"Neverwinter Nights (NWN) is a third-person role-playing video game developed by BioWare"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy

"The franchise centers on a series of fantasy and science fantasy role-playing video games (RPGs)"

final fantasy games on gamespot are under the role playing games category

neverwinter night games are also under the role playing games category.

it seems that most of the world disagrees with you.

So what? These aren't prerequisites as to what constitutes an RPG. You've just decided they are because you don't want JRPGs to be associated with the types of RPG that you like. And you're oversimplifying yet again. And anyway, what do you call Dark Souls and Demon's Souls? Pretty sure they're JRPGs too.

No it isn't. Unlocking a gun in a multiplayer game is not the same as searching out new abilities to advance the story and to immerse yourself in the world. It's not even remotely comparable.

The Sheldon Cooper retort, I work at my PC. I don't bring play to work, it's just another facets for me to procrastinate on. Consoles also have dedicated ports, I don't have to upgrade a video card or turn down the graphical settings, or worry about DRM. Less barriers in the way from my perspective. Keyborards, too many buttons. I don't care if I can assign a command to each key, it doesn't matter if I can't remember what half of em do.
Console tard for the win.
