The only way I could imagine Microsoft getting back into the PC gaming market is by putting some arbitrary restrictions towards other developers like Valve and Blizzard within Win 8.
And considering how fucked up Microsoft is that would be possible. Fortunately they aren't allowed to do that and as all Blizzard gamer would simply switch to Mac that would be a horror scenario for them ;P

I wonder how they'll go about doing it. I imagine they'll first kill off all support for Vista, and then make all future games do something to themselves so it only runs on Windows 8, or else.

Pretty much. At this point, when they say that they're going to actively do something about PC gaming, I get a little worried about what they're going to screw up this time. I like it more when they stay out of it and just stick to making sure the OS works and supports what developers need (which Win7 finally does rather well, for the most part). These days, every time they try to "lead the way" (or whatever they're pretending they're doing) it just results in crap like, "Hey look! We reinvented what Steam already does, only this time it's awful!" If they want to do something else to help, they can have their internal studios release Windows versions of games that don't suck and aren't three years late.
