Yay, yet another bugged and broken OS from microsoft!
Maybe this one will only catch fire and start calling you names after you start it up for the 5th time.

Looks like they're right on track for a giant flop.
you forgot 2000.
Yeah, but 2000 wasn't really aimed at desktop users. But he did leave a couple of things out, and I'd do the list like this:

95, bad. 95b, average. 98, BAD. 98SE, ... meh. ME, OH GOD, THE HUMANITY! XP, ok... now we're starting to head towards an actually good OS. Vista, aaaand now we're heading in the exactly opposite direction.

Windows 7 was the first genuinely good MS OS that I've seen and even that had a few issues to start with. If the pattern continues, Windows 8 might end up as a) quite possibly the worst OS ever released and b) about 3-4 years late.

Windows is actually an obstacle to most gaming, due to the fact it's rarely optimised, insists on running extraneous background utilities and is super-stamped with Micr0s0ft's patented Paranoia Inside[sub]tm[/sub] technology.

That, and it's a target for anyone who ever wants to write a virus, worm, trojan or bot.

The way to write an OS is to make it small and un-intrusive, or at leasy WYSIWYG. When normal people spend over an hour trying to find "Print Document" in Word 2008, you know you've failed.

Just try and hit towards 7 more and WELL away from Xbox OS/Vista.

And remember that backward compatability is the reason most of us won't give up XP/2000 yet.

I'm talking about windows division profits.

Maybe they make a few dollars from selling games on GFWL or from Games for Windows branding but who cares really.
Yes, and more PC games do nothing to sell more copies of Windows for them, so they don't care if they stymie PC gaming to benefit their Xbox division sales.

Then why are they making games a selling point of a sequel to an OS which sells many times more than the xbox? A lot of people only use windows as an OS because of the games. There are alternatives but the game support is not as good.

I bet this turns out to be Knect support built into the OS and ports of the titles for it.

What Microsoft should do is form some sort of committee to discuss creating a working group to create an internal communique to call for a review on the timescales involved in forming an immediate action group focussed on issuing a new press release promoting windows gaming. Only then can PC gaming be considered officially saved.
This proposal is being discussed at the Committee for Forming Subcommittees right now.

Show us, MS. Don't keep telling us that you're going to revolutionize PC gaming, just do it already. It's not like the idiotic Britons announced ahead of time that they were going to start calling themselves Americans and start losing a bunch of battles, it just happened.

PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T JINX IT. That would be terrible, and MS must know that GFWL is a piece of shit, that's why they don't do anything with it. Right? RIGHT?

I have no doubt that Microsoft can have a huge impact on the state of PC gaming, but whether or not it actually will?
Their track record on promises made to PC gamers says they won't.

Or maybe they've taken a look at all the 3D display capable GPUs coming out and though "wait a minute, we could be milking that shit right now unless we realllly want to wait for a new generation of consoles"... I mean, seriously, unleash Peter Molyneux on a PC with 3D display and Kinect and you have the potential for unheard of levels of hype.

I hope they don't. Stop making computer games, I get a ton of people orgasm over PC games, but mehhhh.

Let it die, I prefer my consoles as they're designed specifically for games. There's no removing porn from my harddrive to install, or spending a ridiculously large sum of money to update/buy a new computer every year for a single game I wish to play. It's all inclusive.

My computer is for the interwebs and spank material. My video game consoles are just for games.

Except RTS' those should never again move to consoles.

Well you just answered your own question. There's no competition on the game front for personal computers. If games on PC are selling any copies of Windows, Microsoft hasn't had to lift a finger to make it happen aside from the occasional meaningless PR talk. They're certainly not going to come out and say "Nuts to PC gamers, you aren't giving us any licensing fees so why should we care?" So the PR talk us to death instead.

Facts speak for themselves, however: Microsoft pays for exclusivity agreements for Xbox that short change the PC. They purposely delay their own second party releases so that the PC version wont steal any console purchases.

Just more lies and empty promises to get people's hopes up. i love how they promised it years from now so everyone will forget about what they promised and won't call them out when they don't deliver. You really want me to think you haven't abandonned the PC Microsoft? Here's what you do.

1. Finish the Halo and Gears series on PC.
2. Stop making us wait longer for the PC version of 360 games that turns out to be a half assed, shoddily done port. Seriously, when was the last time this didn't happen?
3. Stop making the vast majority of the 360 library 360 exclusives.

What you shouldn't do is keep making empty promises.
Pardon me sir, but when you say finish Halo on PC, does that mean the first game is already available on PC?
Why yes it is. In fact Bungie gave evryone who had a copy (why anyone who had an x-box at one time would get it on a PC as well is still a mystery) some in game bonuses in Halo Reach. Halo 2 is on the PC as well. Halo 3 ODST and Reach are not.
Wait, what?
The PC version for Halo 1 was far superior. It had online multiplayer, whereas the xbox was only lan. The multiplayer also had more and bigger maps, and it threw in new weapons. Also let you use the banshee and a modified warthog.

They can't. Thanks to anti-trust laws, Valve would destroy them in the courts.

Read: Microsoft has found some way to charge developers for distributing on Windows, or some such similar profiteering approach.

Wake me when they integrate an xbox 360 emulator into Windows.
No, that's the plan for Windows 8 gaming, they chuck in a 360 emulator. Job done, right....?

I'll believe it when DirectX is replaced with OpenGL or just stops being stupid.
Playstation 3 uses modified OpenGL. Just saying.
Explains the purty-ness of any and all exclusives. Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2, especially.

OpenGL in favor of DirectX ftw!!!, but I know that wont happen. So maybe a safemode-like setting that runs the bare minimum OS so games have more available resources? That would be sweet!
And what's up with all the hating on DirectX. Doesn't the 360 use Directx though stuck at ver 9. Doesn't Directx support more things than openGL like tessellation? I'm probably wrong, but I thought that was the case.

Every game I have ever played, from 95 up, that had the choice between OpenGL and DirectX always looked better and played faster with DirectX.

Edit: just checked Wikipedia. There is tessellation now, so I'm an idiot. Looks like OpenGL has come a ways since I last looked. Suppose there is nothing stopping games designers using it if they wanted to.

But Microsoft are making a lot of money from PC gamers despite what you originally said. And the money they make, or rather lost and are trying to recoup, from xbox is not all that much to them.

Why Microsoft started the xbox in the first place and what they plan on doing with it in the future has not so much to do with some plan to collect more of a share of the sale value of boxed games. It's a more complex picture. Most of the "visionaries" behind the xbox are not even still working anywhere at the company. With Microsoft it might only exist because enough people see it as a "cool" project internally.

Yes, and like all x-box to PC ports it was more poorly optimized than Black Ops, I.E. it ran like absolute shit. Not the worst I've ever seen though, I can't see any title taking that from SR2.
