Nah, I like a lot of the games he mocks. For me it's purely for amusement. I'm always curious about what he does like (I did completely agree with his recent Crackdown 2 review, however).

If he says something positive about a game (ie: x game has good level design) I'll take it as an insanely good rating of whatever is talked about. (ie: this game has good level design -> This game has GREAT level design)

Considering that I like JRPG's, the Sonic franchise, and Nintendo, no I don't. He's also rather inaccurate at times (anyone who's played Valkyria Chronicles should know that).

Yahtzee offers a lot of flaws in all of the games he reviews in Zero Punctuation, but without a ratings system and constantly looking over the positive things, it's hard to feel like he's told me enough about the game for me to go by his word. I don't take Yahtzee seriously.
Do you?
Rating systems are stupid and he does tend to give a game's positive aspects mention, though its true, he does focus on the humor which lies in the criticism rather than simply praising games. Why do threads like this keep being made though? Are people afraid that others may actually base their entire opinions off of Yahtzee's word?

His reviews are about 5-10% good points, at least 10% gay/dick/period jokes and the rest either jokes or points I disagree with, I pay attention to the good points, mentally erase the crude jokes and laugh at the jokes. The problem with him is objectivity really, if he doesn't like a genre he'll just slam any game in it with the same jokes we've heard before rather than comment on if it's a good example of the genre or not. I suppose you could argue that he doesn't know what would make a good example of a genre he doesn't like but you can also argue that to be a good reviewer you kind of need to know so I don't buy that.

Plus his comments about button mashers on fighting games was a bit out of place, I can't speak about the game in question but when I played fighting games learning to beat button mashers was pretty much the first thing you do.

*facepalm* again? dont we already have like a gazillion of these threads? seriously guys...search bar!

But, for your question: Yes. Yes I do. He has very valid points and is refreshingly harsh in his critique, which most reviewers lack nowadays. Fact is: Yahtzee does not have a high standard - everybody else has depressingly low standards. If at least some developers would take some of his points into consideration, games could be a little better - at least i would hope so.
On the other hand, I dont solely base my decisions on his opinions. I consult other reviews as well. Another Fact is: Yahtze accentuates the negative. That should be pretty obvious by now to everyone, but some people still dont realize this. As far as i understand it he concentrates on what he thinks is bad about a game and reviews it in a way that hopefully makes someone laugh or chuckle, thats all. If ever something good about a game gets mentioned, it must be pretty good to be in a video. Thats how i understand his "ratings".

But at the end of the day it is a really really moot point... thats an old man with a hat ranting into microphone about videogames...

Hes reviewing a genre still plenty full of immature stuff. so yeah i agree with him most times. Ive played thief, silent hill and most games he obviously likes, and hes right, they are superior in storytelling or in immersion.

He looks past the cell shaded pixels and and neatly shadowed textures and actually reviews what the game is about, most of the time. Sometimes he just decides to go bananas.

He's only really biased to Valve's games, which could have been alot worse. Who really feels like playing through Half life 2 more then once? 6-7 hrs of boredom and 20 mins grav gun is just BORING. RING ring RIIIING

I think ppl who like Half life 2 are people who have never really played a fps, or just played them back in QUAKE 2 and HEXXEN days.
Wow i hope your trying to be funny if not please elaborate and tell me what an fps is aparently i never really played one.

Now this is an interesting post. I haven't actually played HL2, but I found the singleplayer Half-life games to be nothing special. Sure, they were good, but they didn't stand out. What DID stand out, however, is the third-party mods (counter-strike, tf2, etc), which makes an interesting point - Valve didn't come up with the ideas or content for these games, but they hired the people that made them... so, basically, the creators of Half-life are inferior to the creators of Counter-Strike, even if they bear the same name.

He generally seems to point out the flaws in a game that would turn me off of it.
So yeah, I take him seriously if I don't know if I should buy the game or not.

Yes, his rating system is the best. Which he says "a complex opinion can't be summed up numerically"
This basically - He describes the flaws of a game rather than showering it in priase like every other professional review.

Personally I respect his views more than most score based reviewers. That said I after both Halo 2 and Bioshock got 10?s all around I pretty much lost faith in score based reviewers. Frankly atleast at their core his reviews are about the games themselves (Yes I know he does comment about the audience but that isn?t the main focus of his reviews) and not passive aggressive ditties criticising the audience of the games rather than the games themselves that other non score based game commentators might produce..

To be honest most people I?ve talked to who don?t like his style usually are upset because he criticized their favourite game or game franchise. I find to strange especially if it is a game he was pressured into in the first place. After all you don?t ask a critical reviewer their opinion if you just want to hear good things.. You go to gamespot..

I do take Yahtzee seriously as a game critic. I find his opinion to be a more trustworthy source of review than, say, GameSpot or what have you. A lot of review sites seem to just be sucking the corporate sausage, giving high scores on games I think are shit and low scores on games that I think are pretty good. Yahtzee, however, will tell it like it is, and I appreciate that from him. I do take what he has to say with a grain of salt, but I feel like I have to take his opinions with less salt than other reviewers. I feel that what he has to say on games that I've played is very accurate, and he conveys his ideas in an entertaining manner to boot.

I take Yahtzee seriously as a game critics and I values his opinion. Personally I think his standing up to the mediocrity and demands innovation is doing good for the industry. However his videos are still a comedy at heart and must be taken with a grain of salt. On the other hand his extra punctuation column is a much better source of his opinions.

Facts:

1. Yahtzee doesn't just rant about mainstream things. He also rants about indie games, unpopular games and anything he damn well feels like. Look at his negative review of Super Smash Brothers, now look at his negative review of Darksiders. Both of those reviews contained equally valid criticisms and equal bile, yet one of those reviews inspired more hate than the other. Yahtzee isn't trying to make any friends in the gaming industry (Tim Schafer excluded of course, but even Brutal Legend got a poor review) and is more than willing to point out stupid things that other reviewers dont tend to (for instance, the fact that fighting games are incapable of making sense).

2. If an issue is not addressed in the video, read his Extra Punctuation supplement that he releases on this site. It's likely that it will be addressed along with justification of his standpoint on controversial issues etc.

3. He doesn't give a shit about you if you think his videos are bad or good. He has a contract to do this stuff and he does it well. He has had a significant hand in the success of The Escapist as a gaming forum for the reason that he is good at what he does. People watch his videos. He doesn't care if you take issue with what he says.

Meh... I'm bored of this now. If you let someone elses opinion affect you to your very being, it says alot about what sort of personality you have.
