he's a critic. People laugh when he's mean and exaggerates the flaws. That's the formula. you watch the videos to be entertained. I sometimes take his advice because he's often right about his point of view. Admittedly, what he rips on is not always as bad as he makes it seem. Bioshock 2, for instance: I watched the video before I purchased it but I still wanted it and I very much enjoyed the game. It's just for fun and he doesn't mean for us to take him seriously in his videos. His articles are a different matter. It's okay to laugh, even if we disagree.

I have very little money. That being said I'm sure many other college gamers can relate. So knowing someone that judges games very harshly without a second though to hurting its feelings is welcome in my house. And when said person actually compliments a game (Portal, batman Asylum, Fantasy World Dizzy....) it allows me to actually go and buy a game knowing that it can't be too bad. And my tastes match up with Yahtzee's quite well actually, though I enjoy a JRPG more often than he. All i'm trying to say it that I value his opinion and I have money well spent. Now if you'll excuse me i'm going to go listen to a hate filled love song again...

I really don't understand the question if you mean take seriously as to whether I should consider his opinion when purchasing a game then no I don't or anybody for that matter.I watch ZP because it makes me laugh and in his opinion it sounds like he knows and understands the fundamentals of game design you know like actually studied them.So yes i take all of his opinions seriously even if I don't agree his show is still entertaining and insightful as well as his articles.Video game journalist are a dime a dozen(I got much love for all the staff at the escapist) at least he brings some originality to the table and he's also an excellent writer. In a lot of ways I admire him and look up to him as a role model.

To an extent. I have similar tastes in games for the most part. I can generally ignore his complaints regarding problems with RPGs however, since I am more willing to endure the various tropes and eccentricities of that genre than he does.

I've never though he was flat out wrong in his assertions. That said, I respect his work for entertainment value first and information about a game I'm interested in a distant second. Generally, I'll find out the information I want to know regarding a new game purchase weeks (or even months in some cases) before he can post his video on the subject anyhow.

I think he often raises good and fair points, but I don't let him be my main source for reviews at all.

Though his video's are funny, his opinions make absolutly no fucking sense.

He hates the Halo franchise but has only played Halo 3.....What the hell?
I didn't find Dead Space repetitive at all.

I really don't care either way. His videos are funny but they are HIS opinions and not proven facts.

He looks past the cell shaded pixels and and neatly shadowed textures and actually reviews what the game is about, most of the time. Sometimes he just decides to go bananas.

He's only really biased to Valve's games, which could have been alot worse. Who really feels like playing through Half life 2 more then once? 6-7 hrs of boredom and 20 mins grav gun is just BORING. RING ring RIIIING

I think ppl who like Half life 2 are people who have never really played a fps, or just played them back in QUAKE 2 and HEXXEN days.

Watching Zero Punctuation for an honest, unbiased review is kind of like watching the Colbert Report for the news. You just can't do it.

Zero Punctuation is purely comedic, it's meant to make you laugh, not give you Yahtzee's opinions. Whenever he starts listing the positive things about games, it's just not as funny.

I like Yahtzee as a comedian primarily, but I do appreciate that he isn't gonna pull any punches, making him a good conter-point to more conventional reviews. If there's something he thinks is wrong with a game, he's gonna mention it in the video. Even if I disagree with his opinion, it's good to know in advance what a professional sees as a game's strongest points, as well as clearly marking the iffy bits as well. I just like the fact that he can sum up a game clearly and concisely in a 5-minute window without being pretentious or overly biased, and yet also manages to be hugely entertaining at the same time. Sure, I wouldn't base my decision to buy a game based solely on his word, but nonetheless it's one I hold in high regard.

I don't really take him serously on his game reviews because his main focas is on the negitives of a game. Don't get me wrong hes right on most points but just because there some problems with the game doesn't mean I wont like it.

Yahtzee offers a lot of flaws in all of the games he reviews in Zero Punctuation, but without a ratings system and constantly looking over the positive things, it's hard to feel like he's told me enough about the game for me to go by his word. I don't take Yahtzee seriously.
Do you?
/sighs.

He's NOT a reviewer. He doesn't review games. He Critiques them. He is a game CRITIC, so of course he doesn't offer a rating system. He's not rating them. ><

OT: yes I generally take his critics seriously. But I don't let them decide if I enjoy a game or not.

I don't take his humor seriously, but it's well funny...

What I DO take seriously are the generally relevant and accurate points he makes about flawed mechanics or what could be done in there stead... often expanded upon in Extra Punctuation.

When you're done chuckling at his digital puppet show, pay attention to the nature of his gripes with game mechanics, specifically. I'd say they're spot on about 90% of the time.

Yahtzee is to a video game review as The Colbert Report is to Fox News
Best line in this place.

I do take Yahtzee seriously, though. I don't often agree with his opinions, but agreeing with someone and taking them seriously are not the same thing. He makes good points and I don't believe he should be dismissed just because his delivery is satire.

No, I just take most of his reviews with a grain of salt. There will be some points I'll pay attention to about the game he reviews but other than that if there is a game out there I want to play I will play it regardless what he says

You aren't meant to take him seriously. He's does his reviews in a manner in which he exploits the weaknesses in a game, and generally ignores the positive aspects. You could even say he's just parodying real game reviewers.

Yes, for the most part. First of all, I respect anyone who can do good self-deprecating humor

I see him as at least someone who's an intellectual with some of the surprising references he will make. I do usually watch Zero Punctuation for entertainment, but I read Extra Punctuation seriously, as the man does have very good points and is clearly someone who enjoys the video gaming medium and wishes it were better in some ways.

As for the game reviews that I might disagree with on some parts, I feel that Yahtzee talks about flaws in a game that any gamer has to admit, even if they do really love a game. Like other people I can name, I can disagree with him sometimes, but at least he consistently makes a good or at least reasonable argument for his opinions. And I respect that.

A lot of times, though, I will agree with what he says about the flaws of some games, but still like them anyway.

I deffer to chinangel on this one. This seems much better thought out and spoken than my own statement.

Honestly, no.
He's entertaining, but..
A. He makes good points, but only if you were to be critical to the game.
B. He criticizes many games I enjoy, not that that would put me off watching him, he's funny.
C. If he ripped the shit (as he always does) out of a game i'd never played before, it wouldn't dissuade me from playing it.
And other things covered in previous posts..

Amen.

OT: i take him seriously because, unlike others, he isnt the person who says : HALO TREE IS TEH BAST GAEM EVARRRRRR!@!!!@@11232144#%$#%

and hes funny, but he has good games he likes, but some he doesnt...and his a critic, not a reviewer, he points out the good, and rips out the bad, and picks nits.

EDIT: i bought painkiller because of him ,and it came with 2 other games and was awesome.
