I dunno why people hate smokers, got trouble with that myself because I mostly reek of cigarettes. Only thing you're doing wrong is smoking Marlboro, Lucky Strike is the right way!

In my opinion it's pretty stupid, since the only reason you'll actually want to smoke is if you smoke. I just don't understand why someone would start smoking.

i dont like it because its stinks, and it makes you stink. if you smoke outside, and then thoroughly brush your teeth and smother yourself in deodorant or change clothes, or just dont get too close, then i have no problem.

but the smell of a heavy smoker is disgusting and hard for him/her to get rid of.

I would like to say that, like most of these lifestyle choice things on the Escapist, I wholeheartedly do not care. Personally, I find the anti-smoking ads much more annoying than anything that cigarette companies do. Those who find smoking dangerous and cigarette companies evil are fine to hold their opinion, but don't preach from your supposed moral high ground at me.

No, you're not the devil.
You're just a part of a group of people that are often regarded as obnoxious.
For example, people smoking by door opening or on sidewalks.
Someone taking a shit on the sidewalk as I walk past is about as pleasant as walking past as a smoker, or worse, a group of smokers.
Not to mention it's an incredibly idiotic habit.
It has no benefit and it's self-destructive, not only increasing the chance of cancer in yourself, but also in your peers.
It also directly affects your lungs and cardiovascular system negatively.

And no, it has no 'calming effect'.
That's your addiction being sated.
Everyone else feels like that all the time.

I respect your choice, but you lose my respect because of it.

I have always wondered before why people smoke, but I never even looked down on them. That was 2 years ago; now I'm a regular smoker of at least 4 cigs per day. Cigs have this eloquent taste, and because of this I smoke if I'm doing nothing just to remove my boredom (Nothing like a good ole Marlboro to liven up my day). During these 2 years, I have discovered one thing: There are a lot of self-righteous pricks who think lowly of me and our certain category.

Example statement that I overheard just a few days ago:

"Ugh, I don't smoke like him. I'm not an ex-convict."

I turned and looked for the guy (I'm pretty sure from the pitch of the voice) to confront him but didn't find him because either the guy was a ninja or my eyes were broken.

Question: Pretty much what the title says.

Off T: Noticed my join date in the Escapist jumped to 1970 o_O.. Glitch?

EDIT: No, I never "smoke people in the face", I consider it rude anyway and don't worry I strictly follow "no Smoking" policies. I'm also pretty much aware that we stink. Yeah I'm a dirty bastard blabla. I'm just disappointed at the fact that people here in our area don't use THESE as their reasons but rather rely on a defective moral crapfest.

And yeah I know the dangers of smoking, I bet even a dog would know that. I'm not that too concerned about my life span though; if I die because of this then so be it. It's not like I lived a miserable life.

EDIT2: To everyone who commented that I'm stupid because I smoke, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You all changed my life completely. >xD

Lol seriously, no offense taken. ;)

EDIT3: About the smoke "flavors", there is not one bit of exaggeration in that statement. I really have a knack for tobacco smoke. Try letting me smoke something that smells like vehicle exhaust, then no I wouldn't continue my smoking habit.

Oh yeah I'm REALLY pretentious for just describing what I REALLY smell from cig-sticks. :) *game buzz* Try again folks! :p

EDIT4: Escapist "intellectuals" are funny. xD
ill get this out of the way. you should quit. that said i know its not as easy as just stoping and 4 cigs per day is actually not that bad and i cant stress this enough you are not the devil or an idiot. (you were when you started but we all do stupid things:) as a person who doesnt smoke but lives with smokers i say tell the people who ***** at you without knowlage of what they are talking about (ie doctors) to go to hell and take their opinion with them.

Oh look, another self-righteous "It appears you all don't like smoking, well I smoke and fuck you" thread. You know you didn't have to make a topic to bring attention to your habit. You could have read another topic with the OP doing the same thing, but no, you wanted to be the OP this time.
Yea I'm very self-righteous. *snicker*

If I think like you, then I would have been offended. *Buzz* Try again!
By the way, that condescending snickering makes you come off as a dick.
He brought up a personal experience and made a post out of it. Big deal. Just like many on off topic. Should we say, "Oh, there's already been drinking/car accidents/depression posts. You just want to be the center of attention, and are therefore an ass."

Lets get off our soapboxes -.-

It's a shitty habit. The habit on it's own is bad. It doesn't make you neccesarilly bad as a person, that's just silly. Honestly though, if I'm sitting at a bus stop waiting for the bus, and you come sit next to me and light one up to pass time, you're an asshole.
Agreed.

If I'm to respect your choice by not giving you a hard time (not that I would) about smoking, you should do me a favour and not smoke next to me (at least without asking me first, then that shows me you're a considerate enough person).

I mean, when my co-worker Ina gives me a ride home from work some mornings (while our manager watches the till for us because she's awesome), she'll usually smoke while driving and I don't really care then because it'd be rude of me to berate her (not that I usually berate anyone) about it when she's nice enough to give me a ride home in the first place. And sometimes when my co-workers want to have a smoke break in the mornings before I go home, I watch the till for them because it's called teamwork. That, and I love my co-workers. :p

That said, other than situations like this, I'm very anti-smoking. The habit itself is horrific enough (in my mind). However, since starting this job well over a year ago, my hatred of smoking has gone right up.

Here's the thing: I hate smoking but I respect your right to do so. And being a smoker doesn't automatically make you a bad person, and I know this because I know many people who smoke but are also very nice. However, I will consider you worthless trash if you use your habit of smoking as an excuse to be a dick.

Real examples of this include:
- Taking a long time to decide what cigarettes you want to buy when there's a line of people behind you and you won't let me serve them while you're still deciding even though the guy behind you only needs to pass me a $20 note and he's done. And meanwhile you're still hogging up the counter and refuse to step aside, even just temporarily.
- When I'm doing something that takes me a while because the customer in front of you has a Mobilcard and I have to do a whole lot of stuff with the T4100 before he can input his PIN and let it process, coming in and yelling "Hurry up man I need my smokes" is not going to make me go any faster.
- Yelling "I JUST WANT TO BUY SOME SMOKES MAN, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK" when I appear, even though I was in the toilet or you didn't even bother to use the doorbell to let me know you were there in the first place.

If you smoke, don't be a dick about it.

And if you hate smoking, don't be a dick about that either.

Other people just don't get it, smoking is relaxing and helps me focus. I do like the taste, but I prefer cigars for taste.

Also I'm more willing to judge you for only smoking 4 a day. I mean seriously do you ever finish a pack before they go stale?
I usually buy my pack and share it with my friends so yeah we pretty much finish packs in one day.
Oh so now you are trying to kill them off as well. Well done.

Thank you. Murdering my friends is hard work especially when they do it willingly to themselves. :p

I do admire the hostility though. Proves the point a lot more. :)

I really don't care what smokers do with themselves and if they want to mess up their own body that's fine, it's their life, not my business.

Only time I take offense to it is if someone is smoking around other people who did not approve choking on their fumes. It's simply not ok to put other people's lives in danger for your own entertainment, not to mention it smells like shit.

Although, I'd say the absolute worst which I consider to be extremely morally twisted is people who have children and smoke around them regularly. Honestly, I think they should be arrested for child abuse. If you decide to have a child, for god sakes quit, for their sake, you have no right to put anyone's life in danger like that, especially a child who has no choice in the matter and is forced to live with it.
Okay, so when I hit "post" it vanished, so if it suddenly double posts, very sorry.

Anyway, first line I agree with 100%, good times, but the rest I'm afraid I'll have to stop there. Earlier I posted a link discussing this very matter, as well as a brief description and quotes to a court case which rebukes the idea that second-hand smoke has any discernible health risks outside of those who are asthmatic, or have an allergy to it.

If you'd like, I'll gladly send you the link, as well as information on the court case itself, just message me, as I don't want to repost the same information here.

Despite your thoughts on how a "Marlboro livens up the day" you're goddamn addicted, and that's a fact.
Four a day? That doesn't sound like an addiction at all. Christ, I /eat/ four times a day. I watch TV four times a day. I'll sometimes even take a swig of whiskey four times a day. Hell, i've been doing that last one for the last couple months and I stopped two weeks ago and haven't had the urge since. It honestly does just sound like he's just smoking because he wants to.

I've never had a problem with smokers, and honestly it isn't that bad of a smell to me. At the end of the day if somebody wants to do that to themselves it's not my problem. Now I do have a problem with assholes, but that's just a general thing.

I have a friend from college who smokes, he's the nicest damn guy about it too. He'll either wait for you to go or make sure he's standing downwind of the group.

I force my friend to smoke outside if he comes over.
You wanna that bad, go outside in the cold.
He comes back in of course smells up the fucking room because the smell clings to clothes.
Uggh.

Don't you just love the metaphorical crucifixion of smokers? High-five from another smoker!

What I choose to do with my own life is no one else's business. That's something everyone's got to understand. You don't see me campaigning against all the idiots who sit on the couch all day, stuffing their faces full of extremely unhealthy food/drinks. I'm not crying about how you should get out of the goddamn couch and move around, you fat son of a *****. Why do you (yes, you!) think it's okay to criticize me for my smoking? And don't give me any bullshit about second-hand smoking. If I one day decide to stand right next to you, light up and puff that shit down your throat, well, then I'll give you permission to complain. Until then? Just shut the hell up.

As long as you don't go blowing it all up in my face with a smug smile I'm fine with you, and anyone else, being a smoker.
