Was that the one where a few hundred Thebans beat 1200 Spartans? What about Sphacteria, 425BC, where the Spartans were beaten by a gang of rowers? Or Lechaion 390 BC, where Athenian mercs royally fucked the Spartans? Spartans fought in phalanxes: slow moving, heavy infantry that was deadly in the front, but potentially very vulnerable to flank attacks. In the instances where Sparta lost, it was often because they lacked support from cavalry or light infantry. In otherwords, Spartans were the best at what they do best, but also very specialised.Chronologger said:Not really.Simalacrum said:Spartans aren't as impressive as we make them out to be, they quite frequently got their arses handed out to them by Athenians, Persians, Macedonians... you name it
Look it up, at their prime nobody even dared to attack Sparta, even though the most they could ever deploy was 8000 spartan soldiers to the field.
And even when Sparta (A city with NO WALLS) was under siege by the Kingdom of Epirus, they were largely outnumbered (about 10 to 1) but still managed to hold them off long enough for their Macedonian ALLIES to come and help them in 272 BC, which was AFTER Spartas prime.
It wasn't until the expansion of the Roman empire and the collapse of the Spartan lifestyle (the agoge for example) were they ever truly defeated.
The only serious failure in battle the Spartans had against them before that was the Battle of Leuctra where they were fighting the Boetians and the Thebans, but you didn't even mention those so it hardly matters.
Though devastating, the Spartans did eventually get wiped out at Thermopylae. It was the Athenians who actually went on from Sparta's sacrifice to beat the Persians elsewhere. It helps that the Athenians had a god damned navy, which Sparta skimped out on. A huge amount of the war effort was seen at sea, and though Athens was burnt to the ground in the process, the Athenians still provided almost the same number of troops to fight in the battle of the plataea. So don't go giving Sparta all the credit so soon. And as a last note, Sparta kicked the shit out of Athens more times than I care to mention, which was why the Spartans lead the Greek allies against the Persians in the battle of Plataea which sent the Persians packing, and it's also the reason why they WON the Peloponnesian wars.
