I'll have to list quite a lot to cover everything... this isn't in any real order:

Dream Theater's "The Glass Prison" got me out of nu metal and into progressive metal in general.

Yes' "Close to the Edge" showed me that prog needn't be metal to be awesome.

Aqua's "Roses are Red" showed me how awesome dance electronic music is, and confirmed to me that I needed to include electronic elements in any music I create.

Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" cemented that.

No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom"... the entire album, really... got me into female driven rock.

Bat for Lashes' "Daniel" got me into more "indie-ish" female driven pop/rock.

Tegan and Sara's "The Con" firmly cemented that.

Arch Enemy's "Nemesis" got me used to growled vocals.

Dimmu Borgir's "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" showed me the potential of black metal in general.

Nightwish's "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion" got me into symphonic metal in general.

Epica's "Consign to Oblivion"... the entire album... again cemented that.

Eternal Tears of Sorrow's "Tears of Autumn Rain" showed me how beautiful heavy metal can be, and how large an effect lyrics can have on my perception of the music.

Devin Townsend's "Bend it like Bender" showed me how mixing and defying genre altogether is the best way to think about music.

Opeth's recent release "Heritage", a total work of genius, did a great job of confirming that.

Vakirauta by Koripiklaani. They are a Finnish Folk Metal band. I know that you're thinking "Folk Metal? What can that be?" Well, think Metallica and Polka having a bastard love child, that eats nature demons and regurgitates lightning. It's something like that. Fucking awesome!

to the best of my knoweledge they don't play any GnR on CSI.. but anyway, yeah i don't have any one favorite genre of music. i've been surrounded by music/musicians my whole life so far and they've all introduced me to so many styles and artists so i really can't pinpoint an exact or even close to exact spot my love is and for which artis, group, style, or anythose.
Yeah not the "who" theme songs...it was some short bit they played...you know the stuff they play during autopsys or a lot of other scenes without dialogue

The first song I ever remember hearing, when I was about 2, was Queen's We Will Rock You so that defined my love of rock/punk/metal right off the bat.

When I was about 10 I got Toby Hawk's Pro Skater 2 which had a soundtrack of RATM, Bad Religion and Anthrax. That pushed me towards punk and some metal. After that I explored punk and its roots, discovering The Clash, Minor Threat, Rancid, Operation Ivy, Refused etc.

More recently, when I was 17, I heard Gallows' Abandon Ship which changed my entire life. Since then (I'm 21 now) my favourite genre of music has been hardcore punk. After hearing Gallows, I explored other bands in the hardcore scene as well as a lot of metalcore and deathcore.

My top 3 favourite bands are Gallows, The Gaslight Anthem and Every Time I Die, all thanks to Gallows.

No offense, but... ew...

OT: Well, I wasn't too interested in music until I was encouraged to properly listen to some Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think it was this one:

I feel stoned just watching that music video.

The Tony Hawks games got me quite into punk rock, i was quite into that when i was about 12-16.

Then i went to Germany on an exchange trip, decided to buy my friends some music, and knowing they liked heavy metal, i walked into a music shop and picked up Iron Maiden's "A Matter of Life and Death". I only had a vague idea of what Maiden sounded like back then, but the front cover of the album looked suitably "metal-ish"

Anyway, when i got home i decided i may as well burn myself a copy before passing it on, and the first song i listened to was this:

Pretty much blew away my preconceptions of metal, and i've been into heavy metal (and especially Iron Maiden) since.

Lordi, Disturbed and Linkin Park.

Although I moved away from the (relatively) mainstream stuff once I started listening to bands like Converge and Glassjaw.

None taken, everyone has different tastes. I am curious as to what about it you don't like. Is it simply the religious aspect? Or taking religion out of the equation, is the music itself distasteful?

I understand if the religion is a insurmountable hurdle, it can be very strong and a little overbearing, but it's not all that way.

I only listened to grunge and some rock bands back in those days, but then I listened to this.

I already knew how to play guitar (see: power chords) but after hearing that, I really got serious in it. I also started listening to albums instead of popular songs from albums and discovered a whole new form of enjoyment.

It's not really a specific song, I now, but I guess it was that radio station in GTA: san andreas called KDST that got me into rock.
From that point on, I found more and more songs that I like, from Classic Rock, to modern rock(and any other kinds of rock I forgot to mention), and some specific bits of metal.

Mine was a great remix of Floating Free by Beauty And The Beat; this one:
It was part of a longer mix one of my WoW mates showed me, but this track specifically stood out and was the one, which got me to listen to more electronic dance music and in the end leading to trance, which is my favourite genre now.

I was born in the 70's, thats the 1970's just to curb the comments :D My dad used to listen to Status Quo, Gilbert and Sullivan, Pink Floyd, Rod Stewart and the Carpenters. There must have been more I'm sure but these are the ones that are stuck in my head oh yeah and Vivaldi's 4 seasons. The Quo were alright I suppose (seen em live 3 times now, so yeah not bad for 3 chords .)

As for developing musical taste, I hear songs and some of them I like, so I find out who sang them and listen to EVERYTHING they have done. Keep the ones i like and bin the rest, thats why my ipod sounds like a random collection of shit. I like it but you probably won't.

As for better stories I was watching xXx and the opening sequence had a nice thing going on, and I discovered Rammstein, probably the only worthwhile thing Vin Diesel will ever do for me. so thanks Vin, no really I mean it, I know you didn't choose the music but hey if it wasn't for the girl I was seeing wanting to watch you I'd not have heard it so cheers.

Disturbed was something from the Dawn of The Dead remake. In fact a lot of my music has film featured before I liked it, not all. As for ultimate likes it has to be Pink Floyd, I love the stuff.

Hmm as someone who views 95% as complete tosh, but firmly believes that the 5% remaining regardless of genre must be uncovered and listened too there are so many tracks I could post that got me interested in a particular genre.

My brother and I share a passion for minmal and prog technoand I recently heard this and instanly bu down my northern soul and started engaging again with the little bleeps in my head....
