The genre of metal irritates me because its a bunch of untalented musicisians struming power chords really fast and banging on drums really loudly.

However, there are some talented metal bands like the Disturbed and Metallica. I just hate Slipknot and those other copycat bands that are just like Spipknot or trying really hard to be like Slipknot.
Hmm... Remind me not to listen to your definition of talent ever again as you just named one of the least talented bands of the past two decades(I'll give you a hint, it isnt Disturbed). What is funny is that they demonstrate your comment of "untalented musicisians struming power chords really fast and banging on drums really loudly" to a T.

If you want REAL talent go pick up "South of Heaven" by Slayer.

Since metal is getting back into the mainstream for the first time since the 80s (thanks primarily to bands like Disturbed)...
This hurts me physically. While I could care less if people like Disturbed or not, metal has been alive and thrashing, arguably more so than when bands like Disturbed showed up.
-Early 80's had Metallica and Megadeth
-Mid 80's had Slayer, Mayhem, and Vader
-Late 80's had Meshuggah
-Early 90's had Cradle of Filth, In Flames, Behemoth, Belphegor, and Nile
-Mid 90's had Dimmu Borgir and Children of Bodom

You get the idea. If anything, metal exploded after bands like Metallica and Slayer brought another dimension to the word heavy. Before them, there were bands like Iron Maiden, Motorhead, and Black Sabbath. Good bands, but they're not nearly as heavy when you consider songs like Slayer's Black Magic on their debut album.

Metal has been getting stronger and stronger, you just haven't been looking in the right direction.
I'm not saying metal wasn't around in the 90s, I know that's untrue just as much as you do. Much of the music I own is 90s metal. I was talking about how mainstream it was. A large chunk of people back in the 80s listened to the popular metal bands, it was all over the TV and radio... but then the 90s happened. Metal was no longer prominent on either, being taken over by rap, pop, and Nirvana-inspired rock (I don't know what sub-genre of rock Nirvana is in, but that one). In North America metal was only popular in small groups of very dedicated fans. The majority of people were listening to much lighter music or classic rock. It's only in the last half decade or so that metal is becoming more listened to by the general masses as opposed to pop and rap. I lived less than a mile from a major city back in the late 90s and early 2000s and there was only 1 radio station that played post-80s metal songs, and even that was only late at night.

because in Most Metal I've heard, the vocals are Low-pitched roaring or simply shouting at the microphone, which usually ruins the song for me.
Yeah, I'm not a particular fan of that crap either. I don't get the appeal of a song that says things like "I am Satan and I will eat your soul RRROOOOOOAAAARRRRRRR..." or screams random syllables into a microphone...
There are merits to screaming, I'm a fan of it anyway. Besides, the kind of metal that sings about satan is a completely different sub genre. I'm into experimental kinds, like Opeth. They use growling and clean vocals in equal moderation, and they find the right time in each (very long) song they write.

In most growling, however, they don't just scream random syllables. It depends on the tone, as Amon Amarth's lyrics would sound really cheesy if they were done clean, but since they growl, It instead gets the veins pumping, Although that's just down to personal taste, some people may find them silly anyway.

You know what? I'll bet that growling sounds great live, with a bunch of people moshing away in front of the stage, but that it just doesn't translate to mp3 or wma audio well enough. Like I said earlier, I can't stand growling and gutteral sounds in my music, but I've never been to a concert that featured it, so I could be missing something.

I like metal a lot, but at the moment I'm most listening to Flight of the Conchords' latest album and Lonely Island's Incredibad, and both of them have multiple genres in them.

Metal is Raptor Jesus' gift to music.
Is Raptor Jesus associated with Buddy Christ?
Raptor Jesus was the original inspiration for Buddy Christ. Raptor Jesus is associated with all things. Except for those "Flavor of Love-esque" reality shows. Nope scratch that... Those shows are a major part of the Apocolypse that will be brought on by Raptor Jesus. Or something like that.

Glad you cleared that up. Do you have a pic of R.J.? Is it okay if I refer to the bringer of the apocalypse as R.J.?

I fucking love metal, it's my favorite genre, but I listen to a lot of other stuff too.

How about a ska thread for a change?

I like Rage Against the Machine but that's about it.
Not metal. At least not to my knowledge.

But still supremely awesome.
