I'm an outspoken fan of the metal genre, especially Scandinavian bands and Disturbed. I've been listening to metal since the first time I watched The Matrix and heard Rob Zombie's Dragula during the club scene. Since metal is getting back into the mainstream for the first time since the 80s (thanks primarily to bands like Disturbed), I want to hear your opinion of the genre.
"Metal" is a very broad term, and one's view of what metal is can differ greatly from person to person.

For example, I don't consider Disturbed, Rob Zombie, Slipknot, KoRn, etc. metal at all.

When I think "metal", I think Yngwie Malmsteen, Dissection, Necrophagist, Nevermore, Arsis...and I can tell you that metal is not getting "mainstream".

Hold your bloody tongue. Metal takes tremendous amounts of talent.

Metal is Raptor Jesus' gift to music.
Is Raptor Jesus associated with Buddy Christ?
Raptor Jesus was the original inspiration for Buddy Christ. Raptor Jesus is associated with all things. Except for those "Flavor of Love-esque" reality shows. Nope scratch that... Those shows are a major part of the Apocolypse that will be brought on by Raptor Jesus. Or something like that.
Glad you cleared that up. Do you have a pic of R.J.? Is it okay if I refer to the bringer of the apocalypse as R.J.?
Oh I do..... but however do I put a picture in here?

Hello, new here!

My opinion of Metal... I enjoy it. I'm a HUGE fan of Black Sabbath. Metallica are definitely up there due to being, for a metal band, very diverse. I've seen them live twice, they're great. There is lots of very good heavy metal, some with plenty of atmosphere and feeling, some are just plain odd. But along with there being lots of good metal, there is also LOTS of bad metal. Though when it is good, it's VERY good.

However, recently I found Metal quite restricting. I find when classifying yourself as a 'metalhead' you feel kind of obliged to listen to Metal and ONLY Metal, and for that reason, I've started drifting further away from it. I have discovered some very good blues, gospel, old hard rock, soul, folk, country, orchestral, soundtrack, ambiance.. even good rap music and more. There's just so much music to choose from, and I felt Metal kind of limited that choice.

That along with playing different instruments, I started on Guitar/Bass, but shifted to other instruments such as classical and medieval. Since then I've found listening to music besides metal so much more satisfying.

I can understand your opinion on Disturbed, Slipknot, and KoRn not being metal (I personally think they are, but it's a difference of opinion), but how can you consider Rob Zombie not to be metal? Especially his classic stuff and his old band White Zombie's music.

This is why I don't consider Rob Zombie metal...or at least, the type of metal I enjoy.

How about a ska thread for a change?
I don't think that would work, not enough people listen to it. I've only heard a few ska bands, myself. Got any recommendations?

I'll listen to metal, but it wouldn't necessarily be my favourite genre. I like metal bands like KoRn and Slipknot (I know, I know, I should be ashamed and all that), but rock would be my preferred genre. Bands that blur the lines between rock and metal tend to be well-received by me, though.

Okay, fair enough. I still say Rob Zombie is metal, but these are two very different sounds and I can see your point.

I've never been a big fan of disturbed personally, but metal is fine by me... in moderation.

I tend to have severely random taste in music, so if I listen to one type for too long, I eventually flip over and change genres completely.

I went from listening to Cake almost nonstop to listening to extremely j-pop-y K-ON! songs.

*shrugs* I can't help myself... its a sad affliction indeed.

I generaly dislike it. There's a few good bands (Electric Wizard, Cryptopsy, Black Sabbath, etc) but generally I just find it either incredibly stupid (death, black) or incredibly pretentious (progressive, power). Oh and drone metal is the best kind of metal because it's the only kind that's REALLY heavy.

Also I HATE metalheads, along with anyone who worships one type of music and slags off all others basically. (But most people I found who are like that are metalheads.)

I like some metal. I prefer instrumental kinds (with Guitar and Drum solos) because in Most Metal I've heard, the vocals are Low-pitched roaring or simply shouting at the microphone, which usually ruins the song for me.
Yeah this ruins the music.

I would say metal is the best as it's usually what I'm listening to but I do listen to most types of music... except rap because it's true about rap. It makes you want to kill people, mainly rappers.

if you ask any of my friend they will instantly tell you i love heavy metal. i think its a good genre and there are many different types of metal to listen to these days. despite my renowned love of metal, i see nothing wrong with listening to other genres and i often do. to tell the truth, i do rather like Dido...

I could make a metal song by throwing two rabid dogs into a blender and throwing pots and pans on the floor.

I think it's a bit shit really.

I like Rage Against the Machine but that's about it.
Not metal. At least not to my knowledge.

But still supremely awesome.
iTunes says Rap/Metal. But then again iTunes lists Late of the Pier as 'Pop'. Lol.

But yeah, supremely awesome indeed.

EDIT: Actually iTunes says 'alternative' whatever that means. Someone else must have said it was rap/metal.
