in which case your weapon of choice would be knuckle dusters?
Trench Spikes would be a better alternative to knuckle dusters if they are available.
ye but that guy likes to punch
Trench Spikes are basically knuckle dusters with spikes attached.
I know i realised when I posted that

Shotguns are the meat and potatoes in any zombie game, so barring nonexistant weapons that's what I would choose to wield. Unlike rifles or handguns it's pretty easy to maintain a better than 1:1 shot to kill ratio with them.

if any of you had read the Zombie Survival Guide you would know that the crowbar is the best thing to have against zombies. No moving parts so it won't ever jam or fall apart. It's sturdy so it won't break (so long as you get a good quality one). It doesn't rely on ammunition or fuel, which are limited in the zombacolypse. Finally, it doubles as a tool for helping you survive. Crowbar, FTW
A sledgehammer would work just as good, maybe even better.
If you can break something open, you can smash something open. And thanks to the great smashing power you can break even more things open.

Drawback, it's slightly heavier.

Also far more efficient in clubbing down zombies.
There are two things that makes the sledgehammer not as good as the crowbar, though you do make some good points. First of all, its shaft is made of wood, not metal, and is more prone to breakage after heavy use. Secondly, the heavier aspect is overshadowed by its cumbersome factor. When you swing it you will probably leave yourself off-balance, and in a pile of rubble, it could mean that you're about to plummet to a zombie filled pit.

I'd have to be wearing some impenetrable polymer suit thing that can't be pulled apart or broken, then I could just sit there whilst they TRIED to hurt me.

Then I'd have a range of close quarter weapons, I.E Shotgun, Katana.
Any suits or armour of any sort will not make you invincible. The zombies will just grab you and pull untill your limbs are pulled from your body. Not a nice way to go. If you want protection leather is probably a good idea. It is light and agile, easy to get hold of and will also protect from bites and scratches.

a replica of chuck norris that has his power, then go inside and then BAMM. Roundhouse kick to the entire zombie apocalypse at once. i win.
there can be no replica of chuck norris. It would cause a paradox destroying all reality leaving only chuck norris to re-create the universe

oh, thats true.

I actually attended a Max Brooks (writer of Zombie Survival Guide) lecture at my university last semester. That guy is hilarious, and really clever to boot. We had a kid from Finland stand up and ask how effective his claymore and chain mail would be at combating the undead. (The kid did viking battle reenactments, had a dorky Finnish accent and a three foot beard. I'm assuming he knew his way around a weapon.) Brooks proceeded to describe how "Sven" would be good at taking out zombies... for all of ten minutes. He would then get tired, wouldn't be able to flee carrying a huge ass sword, and would have difficulty scoring more than a few hits to the head before becoming a chainmail wearing, claymore wielding zombie.

Another kid suggested a bow and arrow. Being a fletcher also, the kid went around the need for stocking up ammo. Brooks suggested he practice getting head shots by suspending a cantaloupe from a tree on a spring and try to hit it from a distance.

Perhaps my favorite was the end of the show. A kid asked about martial arts moves that would be effective against zombies. Brooks brought him up at the end of the show and told us he was going to demonstrate a badass zombie killing technique. He instructed the kid to come at him like a zombie. Just as the kid got close, Brooks turned and ran off stage, never to be seen again.

Needless to say, we all felt ill equipped at surviving a zombiepocalypse. On a related note, I would use a sledgehammer and an icepick.

Currently existing weapons for my myself and companions (working within Australia's gun laws)
Myself
Bolt action mossin nagant, (A scope could be attached) + Rifle Bayonet
Ka-Bar fighting knife
Crowbar

Companion 1
Scoped .22 Rifle with sub sonics (silent, small ammunition, requires headshots)
Sawn-off shotgun
Knife + entrenching tool (folding shovel)

Companion 2
Winchester repeater
Knife + Axe (or at least large hatchet)

Companion 3
Same as 1, but machete instead of entrenching tools.

The .22 can dispatch Zombies silently and efficiently, shotguns for dropping groups and larger rifle for all round effectiveness. Nearly all the melee weapons double as tools.

Handguns if possible, unfortunately limited to pre-1900 pieces or salvaged police/security weapons in Australia.

Armour/Clothing
Leather/Moleskin pants
Tough oilskin vest (with pouches for ammunition)
Sturdy boots
Tight fitting cycling/swimming shirts (less likely to tear, harder to grab)
Knee pads, elbow pads, gloves and forearm armour (like those worn by skaters or even better bikers)
For urban/house clearance, helmet with with plastic visor (like used with gardening, kinda like the thing Dexter's wears) more for infected blood splatter
For rural/regional areas, sunglasses, broadbrim hat and shemagh (arab head scarf) wrapped around neck.

In general terms weapons that will be effective against zombies are weapons that will be effective against humans, so I tend to think that the circumstance that one is fighting in will contribute more to the choice of weapons, as would the weapons that ones how to use. I'm working from the assumption that most of the fighting will be indoors while going through buildings looking for survivors and supplies. If I see a zombie in the open I'm just going to run. For Melee I want something that is not too heavy that has the ability to take limbs since getting in range of a zombie's head to decapitate it posses a danger I'd rather minimize. For fighting in confined spaces the cutlass is the weapon of choice, since it was designed for fighting in on ships. I'm a bigger fan of the VOC Cutlass [http://www.casiberia.com/product_details.asp?id=SH2374] but I'd need to get a reproduction sharpened while the 1917 AMerican cutlass [http://www.coldsteel.com/1917cutlass2.html] can be commercially brought sharp. I'd also be inclined to carry a hand and a half sword or katana due to their flexibility and ease of use, though their not as useful in tight spaces. Armour wise I'd go with a fencing mask, plastic fencing chest protector, Motorcycle jacket, loose leg jeans, steel toed 14 hole boots, either sabre fencing or motorcycle gloves and a fingered medieval gauntlet for my off hand (to protect it when punching or grabbing). The armour should deal with bites and scratches, but it's light, would stop me running (the chief defense against zombies) and will provide protection from the elements (surviving nature is probably the bigger concern). Beyond that I want a sailing ship, it allows me to move with speed (only on water) and requires little fuel. Then all I do is go about the cost looking for survivors and supplies.

ID want a carbine, like a pistol but easier to aim and steady, great shots, like the M1-Carbine, for a sidearm I would have to go with a .357 colt possibly.

oh and for the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0

seriously. such a great song to bring up a rage for zombie hunting.

Running... very very fast in the opposite direction would be my best weapon, seeing as the 'soft answer' approach is unlikely to phase zombies in the slightest.
