Britain’s ‘deep state’ thwarted my plans, Liz Truss tells US far-right summit
Former Conservative PM, whose tenure lasted 50 days, tells CPAC she fell victim to UK’s ‘establishment … its bureaucrats and lawyers’

So, you might remember Liz "mad as a box of frogs" Truss as the UK's previous PM, who was forced to resign after a few short weeks in power. Rather than reflect on this with some sense of humility - because of course she has no humility - she's just driven even harder right to grasp some sort of political rehabilitation.
I was particularly fascinated by this narrative, that somehow the British "deep state" ( ) thwarted her. This is an... interesting... version of history. What actually happened was that Truss and her right-hand man in the Treasury, Kwasi Kwarteng, actually cut out most of the supposed "deep state" from the planning and scrutiny of their decision making, ran up an unbalanced and unfinanced budget which freaked out the markets, requiring another part of her so-called "deep state" (i.e. The Bank of England) to launch an expensive bail out. And to a large extent, what also really obstructed her were her own party MPs and her incompetent management of them.
Of course, being asked to cite some of these "deep state" agencies, she reels off a list some of which cannot plausibly have caused her any significant inconvenience in her brief 50-day time in office... but which are typical red rags for the further right. Because that's what this farce is all about: all PR, little truth.
