He couldn't even respond himself? I mean, I know he's busy, but surely he has the time to write a paragraph in response, not get an underling to do it.

Anyway, whatever about how difficult Kotick's job is, he's not doing it particularly well, and certainly not over the past 2 years. He's managed to decimate the studio that made him his biggest earning game, he's scared off many a team into working with other publishers (Harmonix, IW), and he's done all of it while being condescending to his own customers and recklessly arrogant. As CEO's go, he's going to start hitting Roger Smith levels soon.

He has every right to respond to criticism of Schafer's sort, but he'd come off better if he didn't try to duck the accusation.

EDIT: Actually, looking over the previous article, Schafer never really mentions anything about Kotick not playing videogames. He simply says that Kotick doesn't treat his customers the right way. So essentially, this rebuttal is almost totally irrelevant. I'm a bit hazy on the definitions, but that would be a Strawman argument, would it not?
You know, I get the idea that they keep Kotick locked in his office, because every time he opens his mouth Acitivision looks bad. It's just my guess. Personally, though, I can't remember the last time Kotick said something that didn't make me hate his guts.

I have no care for Activision after they gutted, butchered then T-bagged the Call of Duty franchise. Tim is on the mark, but he's only just publicy stating what the general consensus already is.

My only real fear is Bungie. They need wear protection when they hop into bed with Activision.

I've always known Kotick likes playing video games. You don't become CEO and still go by "Bobby" unless you have a little bit of geek/nerd in you. I just think he needs to stay out of the limelight and let his PR team do all the talking. Although at his point it's probably too late to undo the image he's given the company.
... uhm... Kotick doesn't play games [http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/702663/why-activisions-bobby-kotick-doesnt-play-video-games-addiction-.html]

He's too busy castrating and gutting games so that they are deader than the horse he rode in on.

so doesn't that mean he trolling me now? im bad at spotting those XD either way tho both sides of the coin work. New hardware iterations and peripherals makes $$$ and so does rehashing popular IP's makes $$$ (Dont forget EA's Madden) So...

Still think its the best time to be a gamer. Kotick is a jerk. Yet i'd still like to be in his very very rich shoes.

No. When he said "take the fun out of making games" he just became the devil.

That's a horrible thing to say from any standpoint. I mean geez. If you take the fun out of making games, the game quality suffers because of the depressed game devs and you make a lower quality product.

Expert CEO my ass.

This just in, Bobby Kotick responds to Lataif's quote:

"No, I really hate games, I only want to make money."

Yes! I had to look this up recently because I wanted to know the difference between a straw man argument and Ad Hominem.

And I agree with you, Kotick isn't exactly doing himself any favors by not addressing this personally. But I suspect his image manager or agent or whoever these filthy rich people have at their beck and call whenever they need them, told him this would be okay.

It's like Kotick saying "why of course I love videogames!" helping a baby play new super mario bros, and then leaning to the side and whispering to his henchmen "That schafer guy, freakin' erase him, understand me?"

Though, tbh, I did expect a less mature answer from the company that famously opposed brutal legend in a court of law with the basic argument of "we saw it first", then again, I suppose that's why Kotick himself hasn't been allowed to speak back...

Every time someone tries to criticize Kotick, people always cite that "Being a CEO of a major company is hard, lay off, he needs to make money, it's a business!" For god's sake, just because he's a CEO doesn't mean that he can hide behind that label and say crap like this;

Bobby Kotick said:
The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games.
Bobby Kotick said:
...have the potential to be exploited every year on every platform with clear sequel potential and have the potential to become $100 million franchises
Bobby Kotick said:
If it was left to me, I would raise the prices even further.
It's kind of hard to sympathize with a man that says crap like that, I'd be surprised if you didn't think he hated games.

I don't care if "It's a business, he has to make money!", I don't care if it's "Capitalism, it works!", CEOs are the friggin' head of the company, the spokesperson of the company. Imagine if Nintendo, or Sony, or Microsoft, or VALVe, or Bioware, or any other self-respecting developer's CEO started saying that crap. He'd/She'd at least be given a stern talking to! Hell, at least they'd be subtle about it!

Kotick is the main reason why I personally refuse to purchase Activision products. I just do not want to support him with my wallet, and if I have to miss out on some supposed great games, or if the honest developers suffer because of that, then so be it. I will not support Kotick until he cleans up his damn act.

They may fire back with that but the comments that the CEO has made before makes it sounds like he prefers his money to games...

Uh huh.
Sure, guys. He is a very nice person and all.
Thanks, but I'll stick with Tim on this one.
My thoughts as well... :D

Kotick needs to go sell used cars like the scum he is.
Schafers word is law. Period.
Like I said before, I think he?d do well in the oil industry.
Was Shafer saying Kotick didn?t like games? I?m sure he likes games, I think he doesn?t like gamers.

Everybody! You're overreacting! Kotick likes videogames. So that makes it all better now.

That's not firing back, that's simply pathethic. Especially for someone with a title like "Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Activision Blizzard".

It's so sad that all developers have to let people go when they're almost finished with their games, while useless dicks (hey, Schafer said it) like Kotick and this Maryanne Lataif stay and get the big bucks.

Can you blame anyone but Kotick for his terrible reputation as a money-grubbing snake?
No and until he fixes the problem, people are going to insult him.

I like that they don't dispute the fact that he's a "prick". By extension, while Activision does believe Kotick plays and enjoys videogames, it also believes he is a prick. I call this a win for Schafer.
