With a combination of brilliant script, editing and whatnot in cutscenes and characters and plots you can care for... I can't remember the last game I cried during...
But the last game to give me goosebumps during a cutscene was World In Conflict with a certain awesome cutscene. It was the music that made it what it was.
It's so good to know I'm not the only one who couldn't fucking stand that game.
Anyway, I'm having a little trouble remembering specifically when I may have let loose a tear over something that happened in a game, though I'm pretty sure it's happened.
Maybe wanted to snap a controller in half in frustration, I'm looking at YOU Mario, but not cried.
I can sometimes emotionally connect to my characters in RPG games but usually not any other game. Since its just a vehicle for relieving stress, really, and if a game is tiring me out emotionally I stop playing it. BioShock is a good example. It can be quite frightening at times, even thought I'm not on the highest difficulty. It still finds a way to get my blood pumping. I've been in Hephaestus in that game for a long while now, because I can't quite make myself keep playing because I don't want the ride to end. Even though it tugs my heartstrings.
If a game SHOULD'VE made me cry it was most likely moments like Aerith dieing in FF7 or something like that. But its hard to connect to a character I myself am not shaping.
It's been said already but I just need to emphasize, the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 when
"Snake had a hard life"
I've only ever cried to media three times. Metal Gear Solid 4, Forrest Gump and the Scrubs finale. Titanic almost got me.... Almost
The story for the New Zealand pilots is told via one of the pilots, Will West, narrating letters to his younger brother Robbie, back home on the family farm.
It's quite touching the way he's describing his missions and adventures, and he obviously has a lot of love for his brother and family. Most of the letters go something like
"Dear Robbie, today we had the best adventure, you would have loved it. We flew over Berlin and gave that Mr. Hitler a bloody nose... that'll teach him not to mess with the boys from NZ...
Give all my love to Mum & Dad, love always, your brother Will."
When you complete the game, you get one final letter, written to Will's family by the co-pilot, which goes something like
"Dear Mr & Mrs West,
it is with a great sadness that I regret to inform you that your son, Will, was killed in action over France. He was a hero and a true friend, and loved his family dearly..."
I know it's quite a corny, staple WW2 story development, and quite predictable, but it still hit me hard. I think it's a testament to the writing and the talent voice actors (plus their very endearing accents) that it had this effect on me.
I think it's even more significant considering that this game is essentially just an WW2 themed, arcade action shooter, and those types of games aren't supposed to make you cry.
I cried 4 separate times at the end of Okami. One when Issun left. One when Ammy thought she saw him. One when he was building up support (Manly tears of joy) and a final time when Ammy leaves. Gah, what a beautiful game. I was blubbering all the way through the final boss.
I have indeed, cried due to a video game. The ones I can remember were MGS4, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts and Okami. ( I was young the scene where
Sora sacrificed himself to set Kairi's heart free was emotional.
If you connect with the game then feeling the emotions displayed by pixels is only natural. That is if they are displayed in a truthfully masterful form.
A game can be as cinematic as a film, so if films can make us cry... i would say that the game which made me cry was either FF10 or metal gear solid when emma emmerich dies
I didn't cry at the end of FF X but I can certainly remember feeling emotional. And I most certainly remember other goosebumps-inducing moments from this and other games.
While I'm not a fan of judging a game by its graphics or technical prowess, but I think the closer we get to characters that look and move like real people (we're already there with the voice-acting, which in itself helps a great deal), the easier it will be to form deep enough emotional links to characters that could provoke such a strong emotional reaction.
That would be the closest for me but that was more of a "HOLY S**T" moment rather than a sad moment. Other than that I have never shed a man-tear over a game.
I have only cried 3 times in my life because of a video game:
1. The ending of Paper Mario
2. The ending of Paper mario 2
3. When all my pikmin died(I was like 8)
Paper mario will always be my favorite. Always.
