That wasn't a single death, by the way, it was three.
You know what I mean.

Rational people should understand that one death should be insignificant, unless you personally know the people involved. Should I just start posting news articles of people that have died in the last three years? Are you going to argue how tragic every single one of these deaths is to me for the next two weeks?
Of course not, there's no point in perpetually mourning for every single person who dies. It's not like the Escapist posts every single death in the industry, just now and again when a big player is killed off by tragic means. It just gives you more perspective on life that death is neutral.

Sure, a death is sad. Should we be discussing how to torment this driver because she accidentally got in a car crash? No, most definitely not. I can almost promise you this girl realizes how serious of an accident she has had. Will going to prison do ANYTHING to help this woman understand the seriousness of what happened? No. She has already suffered enough knowing she took away not just one random person's life, but two of her friends, and another person. Not to mention left a future child without a father.
I don't advocate the "torture" of the driver, those who do are being extremists. But she killed 3 people because of her stupid decision, possibly under the influence of drugs (again, possibly), and regardless of whether she's "learned her lesson" or not, she still should be prosecuted under the full extent of the law.

If this was her first offense, maybe I'd feel more sympathetic. If she's done previous crimes before, then I have none.

Don't tell me, tell Atheist. . Humans can't comprehend the thousands upon thousands of deaths occurring every day/week, so we transfer that to one person that had some sort of connection to us. Keeps us from being wet sobbing sacks all day anyway.

Interesting idea. Humans likely do, but we simply lack the quantity of empathy it would require to mourn every single person.

I still think it's completely irrational to become so upset over the death of a random human. Sure, he did good things (to those who played his games, his wife, and family/friends) but to the majority of us, he's just a name attached to a franchise. When someone dies, you mourn them, but you don't prosecute the force that put them there.

I don't see people putting "God" in jail when people say "It's their time." and he takes them.

Yes, the 'accident' was a tragedy, regardless of who was killed. (And I use quotes for accident, because I think that culpability can and must be assigned when someone is doing something that they shouldn't, like driving around while fucked up. I don't even particularly care that she was fucked up, but the fact that she got on the road??? That's when it becomes really, really terrible.)

But for all of you trying to say "meh. Big deal. People die every day." I would like you to grow the fuck up. Please. Yes, people die every day, but we gain nothing from trivializing their deaths. If this senseless tragedy can be leveraged into some sort of awareness campaign that saves just one fucking life because of the fact that the guy was a well-respected game developer, wouldn't that be worth it???

But no, you guys have to be all non-chalant and too cool for the room with your jaded teenage attitudes. And honestly, it's people like you that make me fervently wish that the person responsible for the tragedy gets punished to the fullest extent of the law: given that she was clueless enough a) get high, b) get behind the wheel, and c) decide to do something really fucking stupid while her SUV was moving, she might just be clueless enough to have the same attitude of "It was the drug's fault, not mine, and I'm gonna get clean now, really."

Or she might say "well, people die every day..."

The human mind has an amazing capacity to insulate itself from really painful thought-processes, after all.

I'm gonna let this go before I start getting really heated about it. But no death is ever trivial. EVER.

Some people here need to take a second and actually read the article.

Weichert is believed to have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the collision and could be charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault, according to the spokesman.
Where in that does it say that she was positively, for sure under the influence of some kind of substance? Nowhere.

It says they believed she was under the influence of something. Huge difference between what they think, and what has yet to be confirmed.

I've never played any of these games, but my roommate is an active player of Company of Heroes. This really sucks.

That's a serious shame, not been a followe of these games or anything, but it's tragic when someone goes down like this.

Typical, that three people have to lose their lives, thanks to the momentary stupidity of one (possibly two) people. Hopefully she will be punished to the full extent of the law...not sure what that would entail in the US, but I hope it will be harsh.
Everyone in the car that caused the accident were being stupid.

Her for deciding not to pull over before taking her sweater off. Her friend who decided to try drive the car while leaning over and not advising the driver to pull over first and the guys in the back for not advising the driver to pull over.

RIP to all those who were killed. I hope his wife and the unborn child make full recoverers
Hmm, I don't think the whole event can be viewed in such a simple manner as "all the people in the car that caused the accident are stupid". When a car is out of control and is heading for imminent disaster, thing can happen rather fast. I doubt there would even have been enough time for the people in the back to realise what was happening, let alone voice any objections to the events unfolding in the front.

You will also need to make your mind up as to whether you wish to berate the two passengers for their "stupidity", or feel bad over their passing.

Anyway, besides this, it seems the token hardasses/smartasses (well, maybe just one for now) have finally showed up in this topic... The joy.

As an aside, I really wouldn't mind one of those recoverers though. It can get quite chilly here during the winter months, and a full recoverer is just what I would need.

Stupid girl. There are a hell of a lot more stupid things I could say but really I can't be bothered to type on the waste of humanity.

Condolences for the wife and her child. RIP Mr. Wood.

I was just thinking that but then again I think that it's a hell of a lot worse if she wasn't on drugs. She knew what she was doing and still did it anyway.

I really hate irresponsible drivers that do stupid stuff like doing drugs and meaningless things like taking a sweater off while driving. People like these ruin families which this person JUST did. Terrible to hear about that.

That's why it was an accident.

While driving a car, most people make so many mistakes that if the circumstances were right, they could end the life of every person around them. I can guarantee you that every person here that drives has either talked on their phone while driving, or fidgeted with the radio while driving. Maybe they turned their head to see something they were passing or took their eyes off the road for only a second. Some people drink pop or water while driving, others eat food. Any of that could lead to a fatal accident.

People make mistakes and sometimes those mistakes occur in just the right circumstances and end in a loss of life. It's unfortunate, but it happens.

And this is why capital punishment should exist. If a person is so retarded they drive around inberiated and/or high and get people killed its murder. And completley meaningless murder at that. No1 should have to go out like that. And ofcourse the murderer survives and the victims die, yeah karma is bogus.

Hope they execute that retard by stapling him to a grizzly bear or something.
They wont do that because that would be cruel and unusual punishment toward the bear.
Good point... She should just be tortured for a few years before they finally throw her into a pen full with half-starved pigs that eat her while she's still alive.
I sincerely hope you're joking.
Not at all, she must be properly punished for her idiocy and for her wasting lives needlessly and so pointlessly.
You don't really get the justice system, do you? She should be thrown in jail, or at most put to death. Torture? Really? No one deserves that, no matter their crime.
I get it, and its as decadent as it is weak. When rapists and murderers sentenced for 2 months to 2 years and get out earlier for good behaviour, death penalty with torture before it is a viable option. Subhuman idiots who do drugs and drive inebriated and endanger other peoples lives should be punished the same way. Painfully and for a long duration. They are a waste of space and disgusting stain on humanities genepool.
Your psychotic extremism is what what other nation are talking about when they say what's wrong with this country. I wholly support the death penalty, but I only advocate it's use on the most heinous of of crimes such a first degree murder. Your idea of justice is extremism, and unfitting of the crime. I must ask, what's it like to be drowing in your own hatred?
