Do people actually buy games based on Yahtzee's reviews?

I did go back and try the Thief series again after his review...it made me realise what an idiot I'd been for writing it off all those years ago.

Personally, I just watch it for the funnies. Yhatzee's reviews don't really sway my choices of games unless they are truly horrific reviews.

I think if anybody doesn't want to pick up Psychonauts after watching Yahtzee's reviews probably have not been playing much attention.

God no, It's a comedy source. He has SOME good points
Ditto. While I do agree with some of his points about games in general, I only watch and read his stuff for the entertainment. I never buy a game (or not buy one) just because he or anyone elses says so.

No. I may take his review into consideration because he usually makes some very valid points, but any game I was or wasn't going to buy that he reviewed I was or wasn't going to buy anyway.

Fuck no.

He picks up on bad points and exaggerates them, which is why its funny. Even games widely acknowledged as fantastic are only counted as "just about OK" by him.

Zero Punctuation serves its purpose (and very well at that), but its purpose sure as shit isn't to conduct complex reviews.

Hell no. 90% of his reviews are inaccurate and petty. They're still entertaining though. I "buy" games based on gameplay videos and demos.

I think ZP stops me buying a few thing. I was considering buying Mercs 2 but after researching it was less keen about it, finally Yahtzee's less-thanfavourable review put the last nail in the coffin for me. I mostly bought Saints Row 2 based on Yahtzee's reccomendation and a good thing too 'cause I got a lot of fun out of that game.

But when so many ZPs are console exclusives or games that I wouldn't go near with a fifty foot pole anyways with a small bit of the remainder being games I bought before he reviewed it, (um... Left 4 Dead... think that's it,) it's a rare thing when the review is actually relevant to me - but I watch them anyway.

I was already thinking about getting Portal and what helped to push me over the edge (in a good way, because Portal is awesome) was it being the only game he's been unable to find real faults with. I've been meaning to try the Painkiller demo for the same reason and I gave the Psychonauts demo a try because of that and because X-Play liked it (and let's face it, most reviewers) and I didn't like it so much-- of course my only option was to run it with a mouse and keyboard at a really low resolution and even then it chugged some, but it also seemed not my style and slower-paced than I would've liked-- and now I've gone off on a bit of tangent.
tl;dr: I take his advice with a grain of salt, just like everyone else's

Yahtzee heavily influences my game purchases, and I'm happier for it. I got HL2 and Painkiller because of him, and they're fantastic games.

I only take Yahtzees advice in two occasions.

1. He tells me a game will get up in the night and eat my parents its so terrible.
2. He says a game is the next Messiah.

example: I thought about buying Halo Wars. Saw the review, decided id try the demo first. The game was terrible, and hated it.

example 2: said Arkum Asylum was good, so i tried it out, loved it, bought it.

he has some very strong points in his reviews, so i tend to have that in mind before buying a game. but not always

I tried the demo after I watched it. I didn't like it.

Not to say that Yahtzee doesn't have good points, many times I watch his videos thinking, "Finally, someone who agrees with me." But the comments I see in a Yahtzee thread are just unbelievable in how in rhythm everyone is to the review.

"I was considering buying Super Military Adventures because it seems to have many things I like but now that Yahtzee has bashed it I know not to even try it out."

Like I said, he has good points, but you really should be careful when listening to someone who's made a career out of always giving bad reviews. Okay, so he's made good reviews, but he's also said in reviews things to the effect of, "People don't like it when I give good reviews so I'll just stomp on everything I don't like."
I think you just have to take it with the cliche pinch of salt, meaning yeah we listen but the smarter of us do think about thwt he says. Personally I have never bought a game off a critic's opnion, I think alittle better of a game that I'm looking for then a positive review comes out of it, abut there are probably more than a couple games i haven't even considered cause Yahtzee is just disgusted with them. HE has alot of insight from nowhere about what he does, you know any agme he says is good is good, and any game he completely bashed is horrible, if he trash talks it but doesn't exactly desimate the game it's one of those research for yourself.

We have a fairly similar Ideaology in Gaming, so I most of the time do. However I like RTS a fair bit more than him, so for Brutal Legend and Halo Wars, I'm relying mostly on other reviews.
