Seconded. I really want to play this game, but I'm between consoles at the moment...
And this is why, aside from deceptive marketing (the actual story had fuck all to do with the Black Daliah you LIARS!!) and a derivative plot (Zero Punctuation's review wasn't kidding O_O) LA Noire sold poorly. Though in my opinion the biggest flaw was this:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.285099-UPDATE-Sony-and-Rockstar-Neither-L-A-Noire-Nor-Firmware-Overheating-PS3-Consoles?page=1

Yeah, on PC this wouldn't have been an issue and could've been used to help stem the tide of negativity that obviously contributed to hurt sales to some degree. No one with half a brain is willing to risk their consoles with a single game, and if Rockstar had made a patch or something instead of plugging up it's ears and saying "Lalala Sony said there's nothing wrong either lala" the apprehension people felt would've gone away, thus helping the game sell.
They marketed it wrong. They wrote it wrong (personal opinion). They didn't secure consumer confidence.

...And Duke Nukem Forever isn't a bad game. It's a 6/10, just above average. It's blah gameplay with referential humor thrown in. Seriously, go look at it (on PC anyway)! It's not the 3/10 some reviewers are giving it (reviewers who most likely don't know their asses from their elbows unless it comes to anything involving mass appeal or behind-the-back "encouragement").
_The reason it didn't sell, to me anyway, is because it's just been too long, and Nukem is just not cool anymore. Not on a big, marketable scale anyway. I think the same problem would happen if someone made a new DOOM or Quake game, really.
It's a shame both games didn't do all that great, but from what I hear and see, I can get why.

Well, can't buy "L.A. Noire" until it's on PC. And I decided not to buy "Duke" since Gearbox announced it had DLC on the way, so I figured I'd wait until all the DLC was collected in another version of the game, ala "Borderlands." Of course, that might not happen now so I'll just pick up DNF when it goes on sale.

All the ads for Duke should had just been a guy asking, "Did you play Duke Nukem 3d and yearn for nostalgia?" Followed by if yes, here ya go, if not, you may want to try another game.

They deserve to lose stock value over Duke Nukem alone. Really, taking over a decade to make a mediocre to poor game is absolutely unacceptable.

Shame about L.A. Noire. I really, really liked the game. It was very fun. And I think there is so much they could do with DLC.

As for DNF? It got what it deserved. Sorry. I'm with Jim on this one.

thirded, i'd play it if it were on steam

these company's do insist on releasing on consoles things that are clearly suitable for pc and denying themselves tens of thousands of sales, and bitching about how it didn't sell very well
frankly i have no pity for them

Now that I've spent a few days with Duke Nukem after all the fallout from the demo, which was with little qualification just bad, I can say this: the game is awesome in the same way all the worst movies on MST3K were awesome. Just give in to the bro side and stop being offended by boobs, abortion jokes, dick jokes and stupidity. It's selling pretty well and it's fun.

You know what isn't fun? Ogling objects endlessly for clues, open world car-based gameplay where you're penalized for exploring and can't run over pedestrians, the 1940s and f-ing adventure games. Even if L.A. Noire did come to the PC I don't think I'd play it. I'll just refer to Yahtzee here when I repeat that there's a reason adventure games stopped being popular: it became easier to design games with mechanics that were more fun than those in adventure games over the last couple decades.

I agree with this. Duke's not horrible overall. It's just not good, and definitely not great.

The beginning is absolutely horrible, however. I was bored and it took me forever to get out of the casino/hotel/tv-studio building the entire first chapter is set in because I'd stop playing to go do something actually fun for a while.

The game also feels like just one gimmick after another, strung together with annoyingly-common load screens. What the hell's that about? Surely the Unreal engine can handle bigger areas than that. Hell if it can't I'd rather Duke run on frikkin Gamebryo. :p

Whatever you may think of Duke Nukem Forever- or L.A. Noire, for that matter- I think this is still sad to hear. In some very real ways, T2 did the right thing by their customers, tried to do some of the things we're always saying we want- they tried to rescue a beloved franchise from bungled handling (Duke), they emphasized story and tried to push technology in new ways (Noire). And now they're getting shafted for it- hooray, more brown, unadventurous sequels for everyone.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who was hoping that despite all of 3DRealms' bullshit they actually had done some work that last decade rather than just playing catch-up and changing engines every few years, farting around with their web site and whoring out their franchises to people who could actually, y'know, make games. But it seems that Gearbox really had their work cut out for them- they tried to shock a corpse to life, and it showed.

The market doesn't have any ways of saying, "No, not quite, but we appreciate that you're going the right direction!" Especially in this industry, it's becoming black-and-white, hit-and-miss, with nothing in between.

Frustrating.

Good luck T2.

Perhaps they'll realize that not everyone gets tight pants over exploding pregnant women, sexual sounds with crying (the hive), an carved up naked women.

Duke was not funny...it wasn't gallows humor...it was a sick, sad, disgrace to games, and even made the original games look tame by comparison.
Although, in the original game you could kill innocent women, infected or not. Not in DNF.

Not sure the goal was to get players aroused. Jim Sterling also suggested that people who enjoy this game were maladjusted sociopaths. This is not nice.
Rather, people that over-think DNF and associate the Hive scenes with rape and torture should probably ask themselves why they go there. These are the kind of people who can't look at a tower without projecting phallic imagery.

Fox News must be ecstatic - most gamers have turned out to be as easily offended as they are.

Well, witch-hunts do make people feel awfully good about themselves.

I find it somewhat funny that such an absurd farcical parody is being taken so deadly seriously.

Why do people seem to think that this means LA Noire wasn't a success? It just means it wasn't 'as' successful as Red Dead Redemption so far, which is understandable since it is a much more niche genre and subject matter. It still sold around 900,000 units and in my opinion was a game of the highest calibre, in a period where gaming is drying out a bit in terms of originality and quality [hopefully until later this year :)].

The Duke Nukem part doesn't really surprise me, but the LA Noire part does. I got that game and thoroughly enjoyed it, though I could see where it might have not appealed to some people. It does seem weird that despite how many copies it sold it is considered disappointing however.

Really, dude? I'm getting pretty tired of all this "PC Gamer = Evul Piratez" bullshit. The vast majority of PC gamers buy all their games. Can we please stop conflating the actions of a few with the buying habits all the rest?

OT: I also believe they should have released LA Noire on PC. That's really the natural home of a point-n-click adventure, it's a bit out of it's element on the console. Take Two would probably have seen higher sales on PC than console for something like this.

I dont like the idea of stocks being dropped based on game reviews, I mean that sort of thing just encourages people to only make cod type games since those things sell stupid well or some other kind of gritty war game
Reviews come out much sooner than sales report, so it basically only indecator for investors, like it or not.

Considering the fact that Duke Nukem was panned for being to much like Modren shooters, it may be a tiny step pushing developers away from the military FPS.

But you made the automatic assumption that releasing a game on PC means it'll automatically be pirated heavily enough to affect sales. As a PC gamer, I find that assumption downright offensive.

you shouldn't take it personally. it's common knowledge that most pirates do their dirty deeds on the PC rather than a console. that doesn't mean that every PC gamer is a pirate or should be treated as one.

No, it won't. Especially when the discussion is on how broken the system is. It is is your system if you allow that type of thinking to affect how you review a game. Jim Sterling gave DNF a 2/10. You think he gives a fuck about how Triple A titles are perceived? He played a game and then put a numerical value to what he thought about it. Games should not be treated differently based on how big the people behind the game are. That makes it sound like reviewers are scared to go against them.
Jim Sterling's schtick is not giving a fuck. That's what he does. And his score of 2/10, which you seem to think is a reflection of his Great Integrity, kind of makes my point: it's a disastrous score. Which is exactly what I said in the first place.

(I also think it's largely theater on Jim's part, but again, that's what he does.)

Arguing that 50/100 should be an average score won't get you laughed out of a discussion about how the review scoring system is broken, no. Arguing that 50/100 is an average score will get you laughed out of any discussion about games.

And arguing just for the sake of arguing will get boring in a hurry.
