If the palm is facing outward (such as the Peace sign) then we have no problem with it. The story goes that it became offensive because they are the 2 fingers used to pull a longbow and the French would cut them off any british archers they captured. The British would then stick them up at the French to annoy them showing they still have the fingers and could still shoot.

The best comparison would be a company using a hand sticking its middle finger up and thinking thats acceptable.
The origin of the Middle Finger gesture is identical (it only takes the middle finger to prevent archery).

Why does anyone even CARE about the retards at the ESRB? Why aren't we showing THEM the middle finger?

They're a completely useless entity. If anything they're a cancerous growth on the gaming world...
You couldn't be farther from the truth, in reality, the ESRB really helps the gaming industry by appeasing the über-protective mother bears that reside in Suburbia, USA, who would otherwise take the time and write their congressperson to outlaw or limit violent video games. These congress people would also very likely glady do this, seeing it as a notch on their "I'm a do-gooder" bed post and help them get re-elected.

If it weren't for the ERSB, games like GTA IV and the like probably wouldn't exist.

Granted, I do think that their banning of Valve's game poster is retarded.

The ESRB is better than the alternative. At the moment, it's a voluntary organization, and it's somewhat reasonable. Get rid of it, and we get a state-run organization, who's likely to be more draconian and limit creative freedom more.
The 1st Amendment will not allow the government to ban or restrict games based on their content. That's exactly WHY the ESRB is privately run and compliance is "voluntary."
With the Jack Thompsons of the world, what makes you think that would remain true if the ESRB were no longer around? With all of the "think of the children" crusades going on, the ESRB really is the only group between video games and state-run censorship under the guise of children's safety. It might violate the first ammendment, but it can happen if Congress feels like appealing to misguided families and nobody challenges it sufficiently for it to reach the supreme court.

There will always be someone to challenge it in court. If not someone in the games industry, there are plenty of free speech lobbyists and activists who will do it.

It's the British equivalent to sticking your middle finger up at someone. If this was in shelves, mothers would complain that it sits next to Barbie: Horse Trainer. They'd complain that it's inspiring they're little ones to ommit vulgar obscenities like showing one's two most prominent fingers.

So it's either burn downt the ESRB or get L4D2 removed from shelves and have Valve banned.

I don't personally mind this cover, but I know why it might be considered offensive.

A poster that literally means "Fuck Off" in a number of countries?

Yeah, that'll go down well.

Maybe I'm in the minority here but if someone put out a game/movie with a poster that solely said "Fuck Off" I would definitely go buy/watch it.

Give Peace a chance....and I don't see how it would be offensive to the English, since it's their sign sticking it at the French...and the French would just surrender anyway.
But all kidding aside, the ESRB might be overbearing at times, but people complaining that we should just do away with that system aren't considering the two alternatives that would happen: censorship or the government stepping in, and we know how Republicans drool at the thought of putting their two cents on games. Yes the ESRB's complaint on the hand for 2 is a bit petty, but I agree with Andy; the other 2 fingers curled back is better than them being chewed off.

Valve has a rather humorous response to the ESRB's push on this anyway: http://l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=2583

Censorship: v. 1. to delete (a word or passage of text) in one's capacity as a censor 2. The act of being a jackass and trying to control people, commonly performed by the government or administrations such as the ESRB in an attempt to control content that said organizations disagree with.

I say someone should send the ESRB a letter containing a hand (no need for a real hand, mind you) will all fingers but the middle one bitten off.
No. all the fingers bitten off and the middle one still there.

Also, it should be a real hand. So the wounds start rotting slightly and it spells like ass when it gets to them.

I rather liked how they over-exaggerated ESRB's reaction to the L4D2 cover by implying that they were actually chewing-off their own fingers for the box art, and ESRB took exception to it. And also... I officially hate the guy who has the cute blonde gnawing on his thumb. >:l

No, it's best if they leave the middle finger and bite off the rest.

Also for the record guys, along with debunking the "waving fingers at the French" myth, there's also the little fact that the ESRB only regulates North American content. Stuff in the UK is monitored by PEGI, a completely separate and independent agency.

I've contacted the ESRB about this, will update with their reply when I can.

first of all the esrb was pretty much just made because parents were to lazy to actually stop their kids from playing games themselves, but its still better than letting the government rate them. as for the logo i say just let valve use it and when they realese it world wide if the uk's rating group doesnt like it just let valve change it for them like they did for the germans with left 4 dead 1

*sigh*

Why does this stuff keep happening? Can we PLEASE for the love of God stop being so politically correct these days? You can't say anything without someone getting offended. Well fuck them. And you're offended by that, fuuuck you.

It's good to know that the stupidity that plagues the Australian Gaming Industry is infecting everything else. Kinda like the virus in L4D :D
