ha, everyone on the escapist hates the shit out of black ops. while by no means the best game of 2010 to me (that's heavy rain, thank you for not asking), it was a very fun shoot-em-up romp through varied locales coupled with a weird as hell thriller story, while being fairly simple, was presented in a really brilliant manner that just got waaay under your skin. and the multiplayer is as addicting as mw2 ever was. sorry, gaming elitists. the unambitious simply fun game wins this year.

I wish more would call out Heavy Rain's story. Along with Yahtzee, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Destructoid and GamesRadar.

In fact, the latter has this article about Heavy Rain's "plot":

http://www.gamesradar.com/f/heavy-rains-big-plot-holes/a-20100224105436979020
Most of those plot holes listed don't even make sense, unless you go by video game logic instead of actual logic.
I don't need to read past Hole number 1 to see a stupid list
About Hole 1: We didn't see her interacting with the killer on screen therefor she never heard his name, despite being a journalist investigating the same case as the PI/Killer, and talking to/interrogating the same people. Why wouldn't a journalist know the name of the people involved in the investigation, specially one that was on the center of it?

Fixed. I would argue that the story is neither simple nor well delivered that leads up to a twist they make painfully obvious about half-way through the game, and that the multiplayer was, surprise, essentially the same as the last 3 games they've released. Packaged with Activision's usual bullshit (charging out the ass for maps, laughable mod support, etc.) it is really nothing special. If having actual standards for games demanding original ideas, and knowing when the popular opinion is misguided makes me an elitist, then darn, I'm an elitist.

I will probably die never understanding why people get so fucking excited for Heavy Rain, but Best Story, Best Technical Achievement and Best Original Music? What.

Just, what.
To be fair, Heavy Rain's music was phenomenal. It's too bad the story was a plot-hole ridden mess full of melodrama and unimportant bullshit. Plus, LA Noire has pretty much destroyed it in the technical department, too.
And LA Noire comes out next month, which in my dimension is 15 months after Heavy Rain. It's also developed by a bigger and more experienced studio with more money behind it.
I'm excited for LA Noire but it's a bit unfair to compare Heavy Rain to it at this point.
LA Noire is being developed by Team Bondi. It's also their first game. Rockstar is publishing and funding it but that's all. Quantic Dream has made several games before, and it got loads of support from Sony.
I was not aware of that. Thank you.

Having bigged up Heavy Rain for its artistic achievement one sentence ago, I will now say that awarding it best story is making me want to blow raspberries until my cheeks flap right off my face. Yes, it was a virtually unprecedented blend of gameplay and story, but said story was an absolute mess of plot holes, incomprehensible motivations and for all its bluff, most of the decisions you made didn't matter shit until about half an hour before the end.
THANK YOU! GOD, did I hate this game...

Honestly overall I didn't see that much worth noting in 2010, some decent games but nothing truly amazing.

I agree with most of this, except for his harping on Heavy rain and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The general consensus is that Super Mario Galaxy 2 appears to be the same game on first glance but in play is a totally mind blowing achievement of game design. There are more new mechanics in a single level of this game than most sequels, or original titles for that matter. Heavy Rain had an amazing storyline with 3 dimensional characters and great twists. The so called plot holes are mostly due to the fact that depending on how you play you only see certain events happen. And even with plot holes, this game's story still operates on an unprecedented and entirely different level in comparison to most games ever made. Alan wake had its moments but was bogged down by weak side characters and dialogue. As for Yahtzee griping that dead rising 2 wasnt nominated, that is very hypocritical considering it is more so the same game as the first than Super Mario Galaxy 2.

...Dance Central was a nominee... for best game... as voted by the public...

Dance... Cenral... was NOMINATED... for best game...

There... are people... that think DANCE FUCKING CENTRAL... was the best game of 2010...

...You guys... it's over. We've lost. It's not our pastime anymore. Time to hang up the controller, 'cause we're through.

Fucking Dance Central! Fuck you!

Well, everyone has a different opinion, but that doesn't make the BAFTA's bollocks. While I played Just Cause 2 with relative interest and had a bit of fun with DR2, I don't believe one can seriously nominate them for anything, and fun is a terribly subjective thing. I had more fun with Plants Vs Zombies than both of those games combined.

As for Bioshock 2, I would bet my left testicle that Yahtzee never actually finished the game. It is impossible for one who claims to appreciate a good story to have completely missed possibly the most moving and subtle story on fatherhood and loss to have ever appeared in the medium. Well, unless they quit 2 hours in because "HURR DURR it's the same game but you're a big daddy so fuck it I've got a bar to run".
Fucking thank you! Yahtzee is great for comedy but his taste in games is odd. He talks like he knows more than the rest of us(which is fine for laughs) but his head seems far to up his own ass. Bioshock 2 had a clumsy start but as it went on it became just as good as the first in many ways, the little sister section was pure genius. Just Cause 2 is fun in the same way that scribblenaughts main menu is fun. You get a bunch of cool toys and a fun playground, but once the novelty wears off and you have to do those missions, tedium kicks in. I like a lot of games that i dont think deserve awards, but Yahtzee seems to think just because he enjoys a game that it is the best of the year even if it is riddled with flaws(Dead Rising 2). Thanks for sticking up for Bioshock 2 though, you did it better than i could have.

Chill dude, have you even played it? its a very good game, Harmonix really brought their A game and it shows, this is the most innovative rhythm/party game in a long time. I don't even like the game much but from a design perspective it works really well and does something no game has done before.

Also, just replace Dance central with black ops and your comment is valid.

I'm surprised Just Cause 2 wasn't given the Most Actiony or w/e one. I mean.. you do pretty much nothing else in that game other than blow shit up.

I have to assume they have some weird rules, or that games have to be submitted for consideration or something. That would also explain why the same five-ish games got nominated for practically every category.

Otherwise my bet for Best Action game in 2010 would be Bayonetta, Bayonetta, Vanquish and Bayonetta.

Holy predictably, predictable award shows Yatzeman, a main stream organization was unable to understand games well enough to put together a proper awards show?!?!?!?!?...sorry i could not resist. Hey at least BAFTA acknowledges that video games exist. As far as I know the American ATAS does not even talk about them.

What the fuck happened to Red Dead in there? It had far more artistic value than GoW, the score was good and the story brilliant. That's not my only issue though; I agree that most of these awards were bullshit :p

Eh think about it. These awards are NEVER how good a game was really. They take the top grossers of the selling charts. Then just plug them for free air time.

Take the MTV music awards. The entire equation of "Viewers choice" was request line requests and sales. So the most over hyped piece of crap tinnie boppers listen to, and the sick 12 year old girl requesting Justins Beaver (yeah not a mistype) can knock out a song that created world peace and ended hunger.

Why? Marketing. And when the money pit games/music/anything is in the lime light you care not for its real worth but what it can make you.

And if the sheep bahhhh Black ops, then every Black ops fan tunes into your show. If you put up Ultra indie game of win up, no one wants to watch.

Dammit.

I should've known really, but the exact moment I saw Black Ops in that last award, I should've known not to go into the comments thread.

Yeah, BO is populist. So? Get the fuck over it. People enjoy it. People got more enjoyment out of it then other titles in the year.

I love it how Yahtzee complains about none of the games he had "fun" with are nominated for anything, yet clearly disregards the fact that most people probably found Black Ops the most fun this year.

And, this comments thread. It's just fucking great. Nothing substantiated, nothing uncommon. Just the usual "duh, CoD sucks, CoD can't be nominated because CoD sucks".

Kermi said:
I don't think you were hard enough on Black Ops, Yahtzee. It was not just bland and predictable. It was bad. In every way that matters, it underachieved and in some places was outright unreservedly, inexcusably poor.
Well, then, good thing this is a fact. Why don't you say how fucked the industry is and how little the standards are of those who enjoy it?

You don't have to, though. There's already a thread full of elitism and riding the high horse.

Interesting to note the similarities between artistic and video game canon. Popular is detested in both. Funnily enough both sides are quiet antagonistic games for not being recognizes and art for being ask to recognize. Other then that, stop trying to rarify games into a one notion of fun, such linear judging aspect encourage myopic views blah blah soap box soap box. I really want to know what drives human to create arbitrary labels of best and then try to force those labels on the entire world, that's more interesting.

Edit: screw your "first" I'm 100th!!
