Here's a list in no particular order:

Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Chrono Trigger
Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2
Blue Dragon
Mass Effect
Dragon Age: Origins
KotOR

I know not everyone liked Blue Dragon, but it had a certain charm to it that appealed to me for some reason. You may also notice that most of these are JRPGs. I mostly play RPGs for a good story, which is something many JRPGs tend to excel at. In my opinion, some of the best Western RPGs are made by BioWare, as you can see with Mass Effect, DA: O and KotOR making the list. Most Western RPG's just don't appeal to me that much. I lost interest with Oblivion after the first hour. I don't mind turn-based combat as long as the game as a whole isn't too boring or generic. This is why I didn't like Lost Odyssey. The story just didn't appeal to me. The only thing even remotely interesting about it was that the main character is an immortal. However, the fact that he has amnesia made the story far too cliche and the whole "1000 years of memories" thing was a piece of dead weight because you had to read the memories like a book. The first one was so long I decided to stop reading the memories after that. I'm not saying Lost Odyssey is a bad game. I'm just saying it didn't appeal to me.

So, yeah, that pretty much describes my taste in RPGs in a nutshell.

Lost Odyssey was in fact one (if not the best) traditional JRPG I've played in the last 12 months.

And apart from that I'm sticking to the traditional ones: Vampire Bloodlines, all the Black Isle and Bioware stuff, Final Fantasy (except XII), Chrono Cross, Shadow Hearts, Vagrant Story (if it counts), Xenogears and Wild Arms 1+2 (alone for the music)

Skies of Arcadia.

Not a lot of people played it but it was and still is one of my favorites. It came out on the Dreamcast as it was dying and then had a second wind on the Gamecube. Seriously, pick it up if you ever need some good ol' turn based RPG action. Plus it has airship battles.
Great game. You deserve a medal for mentioning it.

I gotta go with Persona 4. It has the most stylish presentation of any game I've ever played, the battle system is actually challenging, the Social Link system actually offers interesting subplots, all the characters are lovable, it has a brilliant soundtrack and a deep and satisfying fusion system. I also have to mention the story which, if anything, is a dark version of Scooby-Doo, but the dog is replaced with a stuffed bear.

So Persona 4 is the best RPG ever for all the above reasons. ^_^

All Flesh Must Be Eaten, gotta love the Pen and Paper RPG. If you've never heard of this one look it up. It's about zombies and it's awesome.

It's also interesting to note that it came out originally in 1999, before the modern zombie craze started.

The Call of Cthulhu RPG is good too.

I'm a big pen and Paper Rpg guy, although I do love the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

Ever played Legend of Dragoon on the PS1? It had a combo system, loads of playable characters, a good story and came over three discs. Sort of went under because Final Fantasy VII leered it's spikey blonde head.

Shame I can't find a copy now. Legend of Dragoon is about £80 now I think.
Just get an emulator online, epsxe is probably the best. It's great for playing games that are now abandon-ware. That's how I got to play Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, etc. You'll find those games at plenty of emulator sites, like emuparidise

Just remember, you didn't hear it from me

On topic, my favorite Japanese RPG is Final Fantasy X, loved the story and brisk game-play

Favorite Western RPG is probably Mass Effect, it was too easy, but at least it had a good story and strong characters

OT: Fable 2, as it's the only RPG I've played. =(
omg

you are missing out on some awesome nerdgasms

ot: for story of a game, kotor hands down, seeing as how i love bioware and love star wars

for open world fun, probably oblivion, fallout 3 was close but there is just something about oblivion that catches my eye better, i think it might be due to the fact there are alot more npc's walkin around and i like knights in armor

for some good old strategy, i would def. go with a final fantasy..beating some of those bosses in those games without grinding for hours at a certain spot, those are some intense moments

Probably ME2 or Dragon Age. Not really sure.

How are these games my favorite if they aren't even out yet, you ask? Simple. [HEADING=2] I AM FROM THE FUTURE [/HEADING]

But my favorite RPG that's currently out is Borderlands. Yes, it's an RPG.

Dragon Age has been out for quite some time now. Perhaps your time machine is broken. :p Or you live in a third world country. :D
Oh. Right. Heh. Momentary idiocy there.

IRREGARDLESS. Dragon Age or ME1.

Well, for one thing, NONE of the zelda games actually are classified as an rpg, even a jrpg. They are of the action-adventure genre.

For another thing, Suikoden 4 is the weakest link. I was appalled that they chose THIS game to spin off Suikoden tactics off of. Suikoden 2 was definately the shining jewel of the series. The six member party is an important thing for the franchise and they decided to ditch it for this one game for no particular reason.

Now let's look at Suikoden 5. For the first time in a suikoden game you are a highborn character, so it would make sense that people would be drawn by your charisma. In the actual gameplay you find yourself bending over backwards trying to please people into joining your team, and in the end being refused. I believe it is supposed to take place before suikoden 1 and 2. It also has Georg Prime, one of my favorite characters from Suikoden 2. They do mention the events of Suikoden 4 in the game, and you get to meet some of the decendents of characters from that game, but it was a much more enjoyable experience.

hmmmm... lets throw these out:
Baldurs Gate 2
Icewind Dale
Planescape: Torment
Record of Lodoss Wars
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Grandia 2
Shining force 3
Fallout 2
Xenogears
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Castlevania: SotN

There is a special place in my heart for Grandia 2. Great storyline with characters you actually give a damn about. The plot twist in the end is worth the price of the entire game. Then they tried to follow it up by making grandia Xtreme, which was pretty much the same combat engine but removed the storyline and made it all about the grinding of the same dungeons. Meh, it wasn't really xtreme. Grandia III was much more xtreme, but wasn't as good as Grandia II.

I understand your feelings toward LO, it was very generic play and the plot was thin. I don't know how far you played into it, but you soon realise this one's more about the characters than the plot. Normally I would have found the amnesia plot device cliche, but in this case it worked, since we were dealing with four people with memory loss and it established early on who stole those memories. The short stories aren't central to the plot, so you could skip over those. The ones pertainting to the plot are two Seth experiences.

That explains why I didn't like it. I didn't play that far into it. I rented the game and lost interest in it a couple of days before I had to return it. I still LOVE the Unskippable episode with Lost Odyssey. "You cannot defeat us with our silly hats!" Comedy gold!

Yeah, they did a great job with that :D Instead of playing Lost Odyssey, you could always watch some vids on youtube. The actual game is full of comedy.

Oh, and I also liked Blue Dragon. I thought I'd hate it, given it looked so childish, but the plot turned out to be quite dark, and battle-wise, it was fun developing the shadows.

Me gusta Oblivion con mucho mods.

Shivering Isles was actually better than the whole other parts of the game, and Midas Magic (y'know, the huge mod) is FUN.

Oh and Fallout 3, but that's a given.

I mean, find a gamer who doesn't like Fallout 3, and who has played it until level 30. Maybe one in a million?

Morrowind was extremely enjoyable for wasting time.
HOURS.

Argh, I hate questions like this since I can never come right out and say one particular game is my favorite. I guess I'll go with a three way tie between Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, and Fallout 2.

Saying the game's name again would be boring, so let a picture be a thousand (and more) words.
