I think I'm gonna hold off on watching gameplay because I wanna go in fresh but either it's impressive they're showing that much a month before release or everybody's just playing like the same first couple hours.

Good they can start using the cliche video game title playbook.

FF: Revengence
FF: REckoning
FF: Rebirth......hey wait a fucking second!
I don't know why they're contemplating this now. A simple, "You don't have to play any of the other Final Fantasy games to understand this one. We do have multiple options available, if you want to experience the older titles." would have sufficed. I get trying to gain a new audience, but the number is not going to scare them off that fast.

I totally get dropping the number naming. Heck, bands have self-titled albums well into their career, and movie franchises do it, why not games? Especially if all of the entries don't tell a linear connected narrative.
(I mean, having played only 2 non-consecutive Final Fantasy games, I think the way they work is to re-use some themes and concepts but each game is its own completely different story, right?)

I remember seeing an observation that the only two genres of movies for which having sequel numbers after, say, 2, are horror and pornography- that is, genres that are not respected in the mainstream. Godfather 3 was kind of a big deal calling itself that, and then the movie was not good anyway. "Prestige" films don't have a number after it.
So with the producers of Final Fantasy being very blunt about how they want to be considered part of the cinematic prestige game world like God of War and Last of Us, and how much they care about story, I'm actually surprised they kept the "16."

That's the thing though: this franchise is over 30 years old, and at the start of 16's production, now they're suddenly so concerned. Why now? You all clearly didn't have any problems years and decades before. Usually whenever a Final Fantasy game has a subtitle, it's a spin-off and/or separate series that have nothing to do with the main line games. Usually.

You want to talk about confusing tiles and numbers? Look no further than Kingdom Hearts!

When was the last "really good" final fantasy game?

Only staying within mainline single player I'd argue 10. 7remake was good, but with some pretty glaring issues and is currently unfinished and won't be for at least 5 years in teh absolute best case scenario (but realistically more like a decade).

Sure you could ask "why now" but you could also ask "what took them so long?"
And now because, well, to the point of the acknowledged popularity and favor of the game style they're going for.

I stopped asking that since FF IX. Not that I bothered to ask that much to begin with.

Didn't stop them from not bothering with a subtitle when FF VII first released. Which is one of the biggest newbie booms of the franchise. Many people who never heard or played an FF game, started with VII. My brother and I included too. FF XVI is obviously going to be another newbie boom, and might almost reach the heights of when VII captivated a new audience.

They sorta tried reseting the number when first releasing FF game in the west and it just made everything super confusing. Honestly there's so many franchise with generic :name title that having number is probably more beneficial to FF. I don't think anybody really think they need to have played 15 games to be able to get into #16.

Man, just 10 days away. Damn game made me bite the bullet and get a ps5, better be worth it! XD

I have not seen anything since the Jrpg "slur" controversy was popping off to avoid spoilers and SF6 is holding down the fort but I really wish FF main series can shake the funk like 7R did which surpassed my expectations many times over.

XVI seems very fun to play at least, hopefully the story will work despite not having a typical party (not counting the doge, and I swear SE, if you kill off the doge and don't make him into Fenrir or some other kinda summon you will hear from me)
