That wasn't a swordfight--that was physical, mental, and sexual abuse. Those people don't deserve to have a child. I hope she never has to see them again.

I think the whole problem is the word "stepdaughter" in the first place. That always makes father-stepdaughter conflicts go from bad to worse.
While honestly I have to admit that I probably could figure out why those overstrained parents acted in such way the only thing that is really bothersome to me is the "stripping down" and "watching sermon". That appears -well- very VERY wrong.

Oh and $10000 and $5000 seems a bit much, considering she was beaten in a "fair" mock swordfight. But that's just me.

When I was 16 I would rather have my father challenge me to such a sword fight instead of the "psychological warfare" he applied to scold me for my missbehavior. (Oh and my father was a paratrooper and he was still fit back then so I would never had a change in beating him, but still much better than the psycological sh*t he pulled off)

This wasn't a swordfight, and it's an insult to even the Ren Faire folk to call it one. This was a straight-up beating.
Pretty muuch this. I came here thinking it's a regular sword duel. Not so good with the calculations

Child abuse is one of the most evil things you can do. It's also one of the main causes of violence in adults and of course those adults go on to abuse their own children causing the cycle to continue.

I would like to blame this one on religion and idiotic redneck americans.
"a man beats his daughter with a stick and forces her to watch a sermon on TV. religion is to blame."
ah THERE we go!
just wouldn't be the internet without a "this terrible bastard wouldn't be a terrible bastard if it wasn't for religion" comment...
it's like the "GTA turns teenegers into serial killers" argument, but with religion in place of GTA.

the fact of the matter is that this guy is a horrible excuse for a person. religious or not, a child-beating asshat is still a child-beating asshat. and even if he does come out and say "I beat my 16 year old daughter with a sword because of my religion", then he is no different from those WBBC animals who warp a religion into something horrible and disgusting.

in short, what I'm trying to say is that just because this guy is a total bastard AND religious doesn't mean that all religious people are horrible bastards. if you had said something like "religious nutjobs" instead of just "religion" in general, I would have agreed with you 100%. just because someone believes in one religion or another doesn't automatically make them a terrible person like the "father" in the article.

OT: I blame stupid people. I mean, this is KINDA funny... he challenged a 16 year old girl to a SWORD FIGHT for fuck's sake. normal parents take away the iPhone for a week. "NOPE, MY NAME IS INIGO MONTOYA, I AM YOUR FATHER, PREPARE TO DIE."
in all seriousness though, this guy is a terrible person for doing something like this and the mother is a terrible person for allowing it to happen (but to be fair, if she WAS against it, there's not much you can do when the guy you disagree with is a 300lb psychopath with a big fucking stick)...
I'm actually kinda concerned with how the girl didn't IMMEDIATLY try and run away or call the police (either after the first beating or the second she was alone with her cell phone), since behavior like that leads me to think that something like this may not be all that uncommon in this household... and it says that the final battle took place on the front lawn... no neighbors heard a teenage girl getting flogged by a lardass in a homebrew suit of armor? not implying anything or anything, just a bit curious...

EDIT: sorry, messed up the quote there.

Hold on she had the chance to fight back?

I would have loved to have the option when I got in trouble with my dad. I had to just take my beating's when I fucked up.

I say tie the dad to a chair, and give the girl a real sword, now things are a tad more fair
That is bloody nonsense. How is a man tied to a chair facing off against a mobile dame with a sword fair?
...I really hope you are joking because I was, of course it isn't fair but neither is beating your daughter with a wooden sword when you have years of renaissance experiance

And we care why? Because he used a wooden sword to beat her? because he was a ren-fair fan?

In any case she was a ***** with no survival instinct. She didn't expect her parents to punish her severely for going to that party against their wishes(16 i can do what i want fat bastard) and boy did she regret it. No i am not saying the dad was in the right he still beat his child. Parents insane, daughter a ****, laws broken, move along.
Yeah, everyone should expect their parents to beat them for 2 hours straight if they failed to follow their rules. It's not like there are any laws against beating your kids.

Alright, this sounds to weird to be true. Man, some people are fucked up! I don't know what to say, forcing your daughter to have a swordfight and then beating her up?

I have a feeling you weren't joking. And "years of renaissance experience" is the funniest thing I have read all day, so thank you for that.
As funny and stupid as a renaissance fair might be (to some), they do sword fight with wooden swords, so there's a pretty large chance that he is going to have a better chance then a 16 year old girl, and I was joking, I don't expect them to tie up the dad so she can murder him, I find jail to be a better way of punishment, lasts a lot longer than death

So, what would you boys and girls like to pin this on?
I think "The ingrained insanity that lurks in every human being." just about covers it. Humans can be such weird critters, and we're all susceptible to it in one way or another.

Jup, nothing to see here folks. Just another crazed human. Let the law handle it. Awful stuff like this doesn't really deserve much attention.
Still the coolest character after the Imp, even though he's a minor one. I keep my fingers crossed that he'll make an epic return and continues to tutor Arya when he finds her. Spoil nothing!
That guy got a warning for a reason but I'll be damned if that pic is not super appropriate.

I had a slight hope this was going to to be like "Man trains daughter to sword fight, then accidently hurts her."
I was wrong, this is sick...

y'know, i always thought that was implied by logic. 'dont beat children' probably also comes under 'dont beat people'

Obviously this is irrelevant, but I can't help but wonder.

If you don't beat your daughter with a wooden sword, can you really call yourself a parent?

Goddamit, why do all the stupid people come to this state...
OT: As you might be able to tell by the above statement, that guy is a complete idiot. Everybody knows you should wait until 17 to start knight training.
