I don't understand why this is an issue.

ANY-fucking-thing can be an 'addiction' that leads to neglect of those who depend on you: Drugs, Gaming, Books, TV, Sex...

I hate to break it to y'all, but kids die from the neglect of their junkie parents every. fucking. day.

The only interesting element to this is the irony that the addiction involved a virtual child.

A baby-killer is a baby-killer, be it a pedarest or a negligent parent-- regardless of the reason the parent is negligent.

You should be more outraged that the anti-gamer folks will use this as another excuse to try to demonize games more than you should be outraged that the kid died.

EDIT: not saying that this is not a tragedy, just that it isn't terribly different from similar tragedies that occur every day, and perhaps we should be more concerned with people with agendas attempting to divert blame in such a way as to support their personal (anti-gamer) causes.

Jesus... fucking... balls.

This is a terrible, tragic and utterly disturbing story. I mean games are fun, but... really? Too much of anything is bad. I really feel ashamed to be a gamer right now.

Psychological analysis: The parents had confidence issues, they most likely felt too afraid to look after their own child properly. But with a virtual child they can make no mistakes, the rewards were obvious and more immediate and if anything went wrong they can try again. Mistakes don't exist in games because every consequence can be rectified, every error can be tried again. Gaming makes people think that they are invincible, that if something goes wrong they can simply hit the reset button.
Please... just don't speculate. I have degrees in cognitive and abnormal psychology (it's kind of a hobby of mine) as well as forensics. There is insufficient data to render any sort of realistic psychological analysis of the situation.

From the original 'news' post, you can only infer that there is a dysfunctional mental process going on in the dominant personality of the couple. (Stipulated that that dominant personality is likely the male, given that he is substantially older, and given my rather limited understanding of Korean culture, but still...) Until interviewing the subjects, you cannot determine if that process was one of dereliction or of intent. Until that determination is made, you are merely offering potential excuses. Your profile says you're a psychology student. If you haven't learned it yet, learn it now: a definitive diagnosis should be the last thing you write in a file.

And the rather dark personal irony? I abandoned my field to work in IT... and yet what I learned has served me rather well...

These parents would have been irresponsible with or without gaming. And no, one study showing that cocaine and gaming trigger similar synapses in the brain is not evidence of clinical addiction. There is no clinical addiction with gaming.

It's called an obsession. There is a difference. There is no such thing as gaming 'addiction'.

Atkinson will get his grubby little hands on it and use it how he used Rapelay.

Even though this shit doesn't happen here..

I am hating myself for this, but I find it hilarious. I do not mean the baby's death, but the attitude of "the kims." These two idiots neglected their real daughter so they can take care of a virtual one. That's fucked up and it proves that if you do not have any common sense, you should not have kids. If you rather play a video game instead of taking care of your child, you should not have kids. I do not mind them neglecting themselves, but what did the child do?

If they did not want to take care of the kid, the easiest solution would have been their parents. I am pretty sure grandma and grandpa would have love to take care of the kid, especially if they are old enough to not be working at the time.

Hold on. Where were the grandparents? The article said that the couple lived with the wife's parents.

So that's 4 adults who could've cared for the child, and not one of them did.

Disgusting.

Austin, could you do me a favor and change the title of the news?

Change it to "Awful parents cause death of 3-month old Korean Girl"

Cause addictions don't kill people. People kill people.
I concur. These people are monsters. The title isn't correct.

This reminds me of a joke that was on Mock The Week about a baby monitor and a wall. I'll leave the rest to you, but I can't stand bad parenting. It makes me die inside.

I'm neither surprised nor shocked, nor am I appalled.

Shit happens I suppose?

I just looked up this Prius Online game and I must say it looks like a damn cool MMORPG. A clip I saw had a chick getting inside a Mech and fighting which is a pretty cool idea. I'm really glad I don't play these kind of games anymore. I refuse to play a game with no ending!

OT: Even though this story is an example of obviously horrific parenting, I don't like how it's biasly written. This makes people think the game is all about raising a kid and that they spent 12 hours raising this virtual kid which I REALLY doubt is the case after viewing this game!

I mean come on, isn't the fact that a baby died from neglect bad enough?! Is it really necessary to mislead the reader into thinking these people are more rediculous than they actually are?!

That's not a gaming addiction, that's irresponsible parenting.

This is sick to the point of unhuman. I hope these people never see the light of day. The level of abuse here was blatantly malicious and wrong, i dont care how "addicted" you are to gaming, if you cannot see this is wrong then Im not sure you can be classified as a person.

I lost another small part of my faith in humanity when i read this.
