Political leaders gathered in France this weekend to mark the 65th anniversary of D-Day [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/8087107.stm], the largest amphibious invasion in history that set the stage for the eventual end of the Second World War.
There was a second World War?

Yeah but being Anti-American isn't braking any laws, and another point is that it wasn't just Americans on D-Day there were British and Canadians too. Oh and a further point is lets be honst, what google logo could they have done that celebrated the d-day annerversry without it being in really bad taste?

Get. Over. World. War. Two. You turned up late and have spent the last six decades overstating your importance in it while everyone else is trying to move on. I'll give you an analogy; When I turn up late for college, I don't spend the next month telling everyone that I made a comment that our tutor said was a "good point"...
Worst. Analogy. Ever.

Did you see my clever use of periods there?

We ALMOST single-handedly defeated the Japanese (the Australian contribution is notable and the British contributed as well if you count their usage of Indian units). Operation Torch and D-Day would not have been possible without us. We supplied the entire Allied forces with ships, equipment, weapons, ammo, and tanks.

Yes, the Brits did the heavy lifting until we got there, but the fact is and will remain that without the United States, all of Europe would be speaking either German or Russian.

People only try to forget things they're ashamed of. People take time to remember and honor things they're proud of. What are you ashamed of?

Well google is a world wide search engine. It's not just American so wouldn't they put something that's a bit more international.

Russian? Russia was on the Allied side of the war. While France and Britian fought germany on in the east Russia was fighting Japan on the west. Hell Germany even invaded Russia and made it to Stalingrad.

I would like to Apolgize for the double post and for ingoring the rest of your post (As most of it about the western front is true as well as the supplys for D-day.) But before I stop posting I would like to say right now. The current date of this post is 6/11/09. D-day occured on 6/6/44. I understand that it was an important date in world history but it's over now. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving,Easter or Christmas for a whole week do we. My point is why are we arguing over a date that happened a week ago. The people who went to that event have already gone home and are proably getting on with there lives. Sure they may be pissed off but not like some of the people I have seen posting here today.Besides if you go to Google you will see that they have changed it back so there is no reason to argue about it anymore.

Makes me as an American a bit sad when a couple of individuals who are Americans become ass hats and say outrageously stupid things that cause a thread to lengthen into 17 pages about how many Americans are "fatheaded" about doing something right in a war for once...

Point in case, I know a good amount of ignorant people are American, but I'm becoming a bit bruised from all the bashing.

Is this topic really worth 17 pages of international hate-fest?

It's not even that interesting. It's more of a remark on the generation divide than anything else. I bet very few people at google were alive in WWII. A lot of them probably played the hell out of tetris, though.

wow... realy!? this is stupid, what is America turning into? a dictatorship? Besides google is used WORLD FREAKING WIDE. The American government souldn't care and if they do any REAL action against this.. well its google they're worth tons and wont be too terribly effected. Now if you'll excuse me i need to make myself a nice little vault in the mountain side before the American government calls itself "The New Nazi Republic" or some crap like that.

I feel sorry for you man, but thats what happens when your a citizen of a global super-power, the rest of the world hates you for it. Don't worry though, when China becomes the next world super-power, we can all hate them together.
Funny world isn't it?

Oh yes, and the evidence of the fact that Russia was on our side is that they immediately released and freed all of the nations they annexed during the war: East Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria.[/sarcasm] The fact is that the only thing that stopped the Russians at Berlin were Allied soldiers, most of whom were Americans. So assuming that Britain had somehow managed to land at D-Day alone with what forces they had left and struggle their way to Berlin, you can be guaranteed that Russia would not have balked at rolling over what beleaguered Allied forces managed to make it and march into France.

I just greatly resent the attitude that seems to be the norm around here. Most of the Americans on the forum seem to be ashamed that some guy they never claimed to agree with and have probably never heard of said something they don't agree with, and half the non-Americans on the forum are using the views of one commentator who is saying something they don't agree with to paint all Americans as arrogant, self-righteous blowhards, which, ironically, makes them arrogant, self-righteous blowhards.

I liked the analogy personally, i found it quite accurate. And if by "Supplied" you mean "Sold" then yes you did. At the same time as selling weapons to the germans until you decided to enter the war. It is also believed that after the battle of Britain the war was pretty much won, and that the Americans just sped up the victory a bit. I can't honestly comment on how things would have happened with the russians after that, but claiming that we'd be speaking German at least seems quite inaccurate.

However i do agree with the numerous points that remind people this is just TWO Americans. Americans who get paid for making people read their articles, and what better way to get people to read articles than to piss everyone off so they say to their friend "omg you have to read this!". It in no way reflects (i'm sure) the thoughts and views of the majority of Americans. And anyone who is insulting Americans over this "racism" is the one who is a racist idiot.

True but what of the countries that use google and were not a part of D-day. Such as Portugal,Spain,South Africa and the rest of the nuetral countries. Why should they have to go to Google and see something there not a part of. Millons took part in D-Day. Billons have played Tetris.

I would not be want to be the graphic designer tasked with combining the images of war with any corporate logo. Nor would I want to be a company that alienates, oh... shall we say whole countries, by celebrating particular battles through history...
So instead of attending a memorial, singing hymns or going on a march, I shall do as many americans did that day... and play CoD:WAW with respect.

But in fairness, I guess the next Pearl Harbour memorial day could be a good time to stick a kamikaze plane swooping over the Google logo....

I'd like to see your source for the US selling weapons to the Germans. Besides, we let you buy on credit. You didn't have to pay until after the war. If you had lost, that credit would have evaporated. That was pretty generous on our part. The only more generous thing we could have done was hand you free stuff.
It is also believed that after the battle of Britain the war was pretty much won, and that the Americans just sped up the victory a bit.
Believed by who? It sounds like you're making a lot of stuff up here.
