I watch Future Weapons clips on Youtube, and in every video you have some COD player chiming in with their expert opinion.

"AA12 isn't good shotgun. 1887's are better."

"FN F2000 sucks. M4 with red dot sights are the best!"

I think hes absolutely right about this COD effect. I've actually fired some guns in that game (glock and AK)(my uncle is a pretty cool guy), and i still dont know anything about them, and when i hear all these people talking about stuff like they're experts, it makes me want to shoot them. the most prominent example would have to be the desert eagle. everybody walks around talking about how awesome/not awesome they are in real life, and i have to say BULL FUCKING SHIT. how many people have actually fired one of these weapons? at another person? nobody on this forum that's for damn sure. And now looking back at all these posts, i can see that this is all people who think they know alot about guns, I highly doubt that any of you have any actual experience with any of them, and even if you did, probably not enough to make you an expert (anybody in militaries, your exempt from this comment)

The Halo kid story scares the fuck out of me. I wasn't aware kids like that actually existed outside of XBL, in retrospect I guess that was shortsighted of me but I assumed they were normal people in real life who just went crazy with anonymity. Guess times have changed since I was a kid, we had fun shooting virtual guns in the earlier FPS games but we weren't stupid enough to go into a gun shop and try to buy them.

The reason that guns are still legal in the U.S. mostly has to do with the second amendment, but I dont think most europeans and aussies can appreciate how much of a nightmare it would be to try and ban guns here.

You can however walk into a gun show and do that. For about $750 I walked out with a Kar98, 18" shotgun with double pistol grips, and a modified AK-47 with tripod, scope, and drum magazine. And this was before Bush. The Kar98 only cost $80, and its by far the one I've used the most.
That's a great example of how the rules and regulations change depending on where you are in the state or country. Im living on a college campus right now where I could get jailtime for having a .22 in my possesion, but 5 miles away is a pawn shop on an indian reservation where I could pick up a fully equipped SPAS 12 with (a lot of) cash and no questions asked. I dont know if the AK you picked up was automatic but a $30 internet purchase and 3-5 business days could make it so. Thinking that you can pick up a Barret .50 cal at Wal-mart here is just silly, but someone who knows what they're doing can amass quite an arsenal (mostly) legally.

As for the "Call of Duty" effect...anyone who goes into a store and asks about an ACR or an es em gee is obviously a fucking idiot, and 98% of them will only ever be a danger to themselves and anyone dumb enough to hang around them. The other 2%, if they were going to commit violent crime, headed down that path way before Modern Warfare came around. But when if they finally do snap and go on a rampage someday, there's a lot more of us around who'll be able to tell the cops what they were armed with...

"Gun enthusiast" is both an amusing and depressing phrase.

Anyway, I've definitely heard of this before. Can't say I ever listen.
Wh... What?

How is being a gun enthusiast any different than being an enthusiast of anything?

Edit to add: The number of people who use the word 'clip' in this thread makes me rage.

gotta agree, trying to take guns away from the people with guns seems like a poor idea.

i must admit, playing FPS sparked my interest in arms.
i can't afford a nice gun, but i know of some I want, and i do want to get my NFA/class III weapon permit
but really, even counter-strike apparently makes people gun experts
i heard someone recently talking about accuracy for the M-249 SAW (minimi) and they said it's accuracy is like in counterstrike-you cant hit anything that is more than 20 meters away, which is pure B.S.-real guns are usually quite capable of hitting targets reliably at 100+ yards. the games dumb them down for fairness

I always referred to a 'modern warfare effect', which is where gamers will think guns that have been outdated for decades are modern.

RPD? My favourite gun in the game. But they only use it in the shittiest of third world countries these days.

I shudder to think of some acne-ridden, sweaty CoD nerd going into a supermarket with a P90 with the hopes of "ganking some n00bs".
OO, i actually researched the P90 after i got obsessed with stargate (thought it was a made up gun the first time) and apparently, civies can not get a full auto, or the 50 round mag.

*grumbles lightly*

I suppose that my only real complaint is that the reality of weapons is being taken in equal value to the virtual application. Noobs and pwning should not be allowed into gun shops, as a general rule.

I like playing shooter games.

I have ALSO been in contact with firearms most of my life. I know how to fire them with great effectiveness. Their application is readily comparable to the simulated reality in as much as playing a guitar could be compared to playing guitar hero.

"so I was surprised when he asked, 'Can you buy an ACR in there?'"
If someone said that when they were in a car with me, I would kick them out of my moving car.

Video games are excellent learning tools. I've played Sonic 2 and I now know all about little woodland creatures and scientists with ridiculous machines.

Can't believe it's still legal in America to carry guns... Fucking wild west. Well yeah the world is kinda retarded and this doesn't suprise me a bit. Hopefully all the gamers WILL buy a gun and then just annihilate each other. Many less humanbeings to worry about
It's not that simple, in most states you have to jump through a lot of hoops take lots of training, test and psychological examinations before you will be granted a "Concealed Carry Licence" and even then you are extremely restricted in where you can go with said concealed weapon.

It is remarkably easy to get a gun in most US states... but you can't just tuck it in your waistband and go shopping. It's like how it's easy to buy a car, not so easy to get a driving licence.

And plenty of US states don't allow concealed carry at all, such as New York, California, Washington DC even has a complete ban on handguns even in the home.

No, the wild west died a long time ago.
